Hello

This is the feedback thread for the 20 testers who have received a new YouView TV box and who are currently trying it out in their homes.

YouView say "YouView is a subscription-free television service which seamlessly combines live and catch-up television. The service offers over 70 free to air channels and radio stations via a TV aerial and also connects to any broadband service to bring catch-up and on demand programmes directly to your TV. The TV service, which launched in July 2012, is backed by BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, BT, TalkTalk and Arqiva"

The YouView box allows you to record, pause and rewind TV, as well as featuring BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, 4oD and Demand 5.

Testers: we'll be asking you to add feedback twice - we'd like your first impressions now and in a couple of weeks we will add some more questions.

So, in terms of your first impressions. please....
~ give your overall impression when it arrived
~ describe the set up: did you set up your YouView box yourself? If not, who did? How easy did you / your DH/DP etc find it to set up your YouView box?
~ tell us which TV is it on/ in which room
~ share what you/ your family think the first couple of times you used it - what was the best feature and what, if anything, have you struggled with

If you're not a tester, YouView would love to hear from you - for a chance to win a £100 John Lewis voucher please share on this thread the programme(s) you'd love to pause, record or watch again - this could be a programme that's on now, or something special from the last few years or even something from your childhood - the programme which is really special to you and/or your family. Maybe you were on TV as a child and would like to see it again or you want to relive an Olympic moment or even maybe you're a massive Corrie fan and want to never miss an episode! Please share this on the thread and you'll be entered into the prize draw.

thanks
MNHQ

Please note: The final questions have now been added to the thread on Tues 2 April at 11:30

The Olympic Opening Ceremony and Super Saturday of the Olympics too.

Not a tester.

I'd love to watch all the stuff from my childhood again - The Clangers, Roobarb & Custard, Camberwick Green, Mary, Mungo & Midge, Mr Benn etc. I'm sure I'd be transported back in time (but it would probably feel horribly dated too).

I like to watch and sometimes pause One Born Every Minute as I sometimes can't believe what is happening in it!

Have to admit I'm not a big TV watcher, but recently I loved The Hotel with a passion - really missing it! Also liked An Idiot Abroad and Springwatch/Autumnwatch. Am I getting old? DD1 (14) is starting to get into some of the crass stuff on ITV2 - Jeremy Kyle and Real Housewives etc. Hoping it's a phase.

Non-tester here.

Even though I've watched it 10 times all the way through, I'd love to watch the Olympics Opening Ceremony again. My husband was in the opening 'Pandemonium' section, and I was so proud to sit in the stadium and watch him, and then get to see it again on the tv! His hard work, and the hard work of thousands paid off, and they were magnificent!

Non Tester.

I would like to re-watch Borgen. I spend the whole time peering at the screen trying to keep up with the subtitles or nudging my poor husband saying 'what's going on?', 'who's he?', 'I don't understand what that means'. I think both my husband and I would appreciate being able to watch this back again.

Switched from expensive Sky to equally expensive, and possibly even more annoying, Virgin last year. Ready to switch again.

YouView might be a good option if we can add all sports channels which DP needs for his job (though we have to pay). Would be good to see more feedback from others who have switched from premium services.

A little concerned about some of the less positive comments though possibly no worse than Virgin, just different "tics" I guess.

I'd like to watch Twin Peaks. Didn't get into it first time round but I think I'm missing a whole raft of cultural references.

I love to watch and rewind One Born Every Minute. I love it but don't know why I do it to myself, I end up in tears every time. Such lovely moments though and I love it at the end when the long awaited babies are born.

Would love to watch Hotch Potch House a children's programme from the mid 90's again. This was DS's favourite and I would really like to see it again.
Would also love to see winds of war and a very peculiar practice again.
I suppose there is a health warning though. I Remember buying a DVD of rentaghost and telling DCs how fantastic it was. Except that it wasn't. Such a disappointment, a programme that I really did ROFL when i watched as a child just wasn't funny any more.

All members of the family are having a say here and its a big vote for Captain Pugwash! I remember watching them as does hubby and kids saw them on a DVD now broken. Ok so its a bit non p c in places in our world now but back then we didn't notice and now my kids just see how sensible that Tom is and how getting all puffed up like the captain lands you in a whole heap if trouble! The monsters are still fab too !

(Non tester)

Love to 'rewind' to my childhood and watch some of my favourite programmes from back then including Playschool, Lets Pretend, Dungeons & Dragons, and Byker Grove!!

I'd love to share more recent programmes with family & friends who 'missed out' first time round - including Homeland and Spooks.

Finally, I'd record lots of episodes of Peppa Pig for my DS who loves it!! Smile

How long did it take you to understand how to use YouView?
After one evening of using it, I felt quite at home with everything nd how to find the different menus.

Has your child/children used YouView? How long did it take them to understand it and get used to it?
Noooooo, she is not even 3 yet- if I handed her a remote control, it'd be lost forever within a very short space of time!

Which programmes have you most enjoyed watching on YouView so far?
Call the midwife, master chef, and the free film thingy, plus CBeebies and milkshake both of which my dd loves.

Which of the following services have you most enjoyed so far?
On demand and catch up TV have been great! I rally like the pause/rewind functions.

Who in your family has used your YouView box the most?
My dd watches it more than I do!

What have you found YouView most useful for so far?
Being able to pause something, then carry on watching
Catch up function

~ How long did it take you to understand how to use YouView?

Not long at all. Box is fairly intuitive to use. Would be nice if the MyView section listed oldest recordings at the top, though - current display puts oldest shows (the ones you want to watch first) at the bottom, which means lost of scrolling we'd rather not do.

~ Has your child/children used YouView? How long did it take them to understand it and get used to it?

Yes, mostly using the Milkshake streaming app. 6-year-old can use it with no problems.

~ Which programmes have you most enjoyed watching on YouView so far?

Milkshake for the kids as mentioned; Corrie; Top Gear.

~ Which of the following services have you most enjoyed so far? Live TV/ on-demand/7 day catch up

On Demand. Very rarely watch anything live these days, would usually be recorded or OD. The inclusion of OD programmes in the main guide is very useful.

~ Who in your family has used your YouView box the most?

About equal.

~ What have you found YouView most useful for so far? Catching up on shows you've missed/ entertaining the kids/finding something to watch to pass time/ watching TV live/ listening to the radio/ search functionality, backwards 7 day programme guide, on demand players, record functionality

OD & PVR functions, using Search to set recordings. Usual way of watching TV around here these days. Radio gets a fair bit of use, too.

Matilda. The only children's film I actively enjoy and can stomach over and over again.

I particularly love the chocolate cake scene with Bruce Bogtrotter. The music is so triumphant and uplifting. I could watch that all day...(said in the whistful voice of Matilda as she describes her love of Darhls Chickens).

Non-tester, seriously contemplating one of these although a bit concerned what it will do to our bandwidth usage.
I'd love to see Blackadder again... debating when it will be OK to share with the children (8 & 6).

Fairly random, but I'd love to watch The House of Tiny Tearaways again. I found them fascinating years ago before I had kids, and would like to re-watch them now that I have my own tearaways. Therewas one mum in particular that I remember. She was a single parent of 2 DDs and I think she had been in care as a child- no real experience of good parenting. Her children were physically very well cared for, but she didn't know how to play with them. I thought she was a tremendously strong person, and sometimes wonder how she's getting on now.

Non tester. I would like to see Torvill and Dean win the World Championships in Ottawa in 1984. They had a power cut and the competition was delayed until the early hours UK time. My mum told me she'd wake me for it and she didn't. She had no intention of waking me. I have never forgiven her :(

Bit cheeky but as a talktalk customer who has just signed up for youview have anyu of you had experiance of how the box functions on minimal speed? I have a speed of between 3.5 and 2.5. Will it work at all? They say it will over at over 3 but does it and what happens when the speed drops?
Hijack over
I would love to see re-runs of the Goodies. I was too young to really remember them and remember they were funny (at the time)!
