This thread is for the 200 Mumsnetters who have been trying the new Primula PODs with their DCs. Below are a few questions to get you started but please feel free to add any other comments you may also have.

Everyone who adds their feedback to this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one winner will receive a £150 Debenhams voucher.

The first few questions are about the Primula Cheese PODs:
Q1. Who in your family tried the Primula PODs? What were your/their initial impressions?

As part of a lunchbox? As a treat? etc Q5. "Primula PODs are a good source of calcium", would this statement encourage you to buy this product or not? If so, why? If not why not? Q6. What features do you ideally want to see from children's snacks? Q7. If it came up in conversation would you recommend Primula PODs to a friend/relative? If so why? If not, why not?

Now just a couple of questions about the POD Island website www.primulapods.co.uk
Q1. What did your DC think of the website? Were there any aspects they particularly liked or disliked? Did they have a favourite area of the site?

Q1. Who in your family tried the Primula PODs? What were your/their initial impressions?

Myself, DS1 (9) and DS 2 (4)
Q2. In particular what did you and your family think of the following in relation to both the original PODs and the Cheese N Chive PODs?

  • Texture

ok

  • Taste

Nice, especially the cheese and chive

  • Packaging

Nice, easy to open.

Q3. Did you try any of the Primula PODs recipes from the Primula website? If so which one(s) and what did you think of them?

No

Q4. When were the PODs eaten? As an after school snack? As part of a lunchbox? As a treat? etc

Snack and lunch box

Q5. "Primula PODs are a good source of calcium", would this statement encourage you to buy this product or not? If so, why? If not why not?

No: almost all cheese is a good source of calcium.

Q6. What features do you ideally want to see from children's snacks?

Ideally, one or two of their five a day squeezed/hidden in there.

Q7. If it came up in conversation would you recommend Primula PODs to a friend/relative? If so why? If not, why not?

Yes, I might say they were quite nice.

Now just a couple of questions about the POD Island website www.primulapods.co.uk
Q1. What did your DC think of the website? Were there any aspects they particularly liked or disliked? Did they have a favourite area of the site?

My DSs weren't interested. They like computer games, so this was basic (although nice) and unengaing for them.

Q2. Is there anything else you'd like to see on the website? Any areas for improvements? What did you like most about the website for your child(ren)?

It wasn't their thing: no strong likes/dislikes, so no changes desired really.

Q1. Who in your family tried the Primula PODs? What were your/their initial impressions? my 5 year old daughter, my 2 (nearly 3!) year old son and myself
Q2. In particular what did you and your family think of the following in relation to both the original PODs and the Cheese N Chive PODs?

  • Texture
  • Taste
  • Packaging
Initially my daughter didn't like the texture which she said was rubbery. However, she liked the taste of the chive POD so much she didn't mind. My son didn't like the taste of the chive version but liked the orginal especially dipped in mayonnaise or ketchup. Both liked the packaging which they deemed "clever". They both sent time playing with the PODs. I thought the taste was ok but rather synthetic. Q3. Did you try any of the Primula PODs recipes from the Primula website? If so which one(s) and what did you think of them? Unfortunately not because the children insisted on having the PODs as snacks Q4. When were the PODs eaten? As an after school snack? As part of a lunchbox? As a treat? etc As snacks during the day and after school Q5. "Primula PODs are a good source of calcium", would this statement encourage you to buy this product or not? If so, why? If not why not? It would but I expect cheese to contain calcium - isn't that a given? To make it more persuasive it would need to say how much calcium Q6. What features do you ideally want to see from children's snacks? healthy, tasty, enjoyable, free from artificial nasties, rich in vitamins/minerals, easy to eat/digest, mess-free, recyclable packaging Q7. If it came up in conversation would you recommend Primula PODs to a friend/relative? If so why? If not, why not? Yes because the PODs are a convenient snack and the children liked them

Now just a couple of questions about the POD Island website www.primulapods.co.uk
Q1. What did your DC think of the website? Were there any aspects they particularly liked or disliked? Did they have a favourite area of the site? the children weren't interested because they said it was "boring"
Q2. Is there anything else you'd like to see on the website? Any areas for improvements? What did you like most about the website for your child(ren)? Maybe some competitions for children

As we disliked the taste I would not be influenced by it's nutritional content.

Healthy, easy to pack in lunchbox and filling.

DD thought the website was very colourful and bright. Lots of activities and games. However some games took a long time to load and the Colour Me In section didn't seem to work. Favourite area was the story of POD Island.

Q2. Is there anything else you'd like to see on the website? Any areas for improvements? What did you like most about the website for your child(ren)?
Parts of the website didn't function on the ipad and had to move to the laptop instead.

The first few questions are about the Primula Cheese PODs:
Q1. Who in your family tried the Primula PODs? What were your/their initial impressions?

Me - loved them both but would not necessarily buy the chive flavour as I prefer the plain one
Daughter (5) - only tried the plain one and didn't like it much
Son (6months) - again only tried little bits of the plain one. It's hard to say whether he like it or not but it kept going in and didn't come out again!

Q2. In particular what did you and your family think of the following in relation to both the original PODs and the Cheese N Chive PODs?

  • Texture
  • Taste
  • Packaging

Like the packaging as its far easier to open than babybels. The taste is on the verge of being on the strong side, but I quite like this. The texture was acceptable as a snacking cheese.

Q3. Did you try any of the Primula PODs recipes from the Primula website? If so which one(s) and what did you think of them?

Didn't try any - I just can't imagine what it would be like melted which put me off a bit.

Q4. When were the PODs eaten? As an after school snack? As part of a lunchbox? As a treat? etc

After school, snack, with a sandwich at lunchtime. If my daughter had of liked them, I would have put them in her lunchbox.

Q5. "Primula PODs are a good source of calcium", would this statement encourage you to buy this product or not? If so, why? If not why not?

It wouldn't encourage or discourage me - I tend to buy whatever is on special offer/price rather than based on what it says on the label.

Q6. What features do you ideally want to see from children's snacks?

Easy to open, no artificial flavours etc.

Q7. If it came up in conversation would you recommend Primula PODs to a friend/relative? If so why? If not, why not?

I tried to but they weren't familiar with primula, but yes I did recommend

StopEatingThatMud · 21/12/2012 22:25

Q1. Who in your family tried the Primula PODs? What were your/their initial impressions?
Just me, I never received a response to my email asking if I could get anymore for DD to try as they'd been kept at the sorting office overnight before I got them and the letter said not to eat them. I've not seem them whilst I've been out shopping so not bought anymore and wasn't risking giving them to DD when we'd been told not to.
I liked them!

Q2. In particular what did you and your family think of the following in relation to both the original PODs and the Cheese N Chive PODs?
- Texture
Nice, I love "fake" cheese products though. Give me a plastic cheese slice anyday! Less rubbery than babybel which was what I instantly compared them to.
- Taste
Good. Similar to Primula spread (unsurprisingly!) and I could eat an entire tube of the ham spread straight from the tube if no-one was looking. I prefered the chive ones, found the plain ones a bit...plain.
- Packaging
Easy to open, not sure if DD (18m) would of managed them just yet but she's all thumbs. I was surprised to see someone commenting upthread that they aren't recyclable, I didn't check and had been chucking them in with my recycling as my council are quite good at taking most things that can be recycled. Being non recyclable put me off a bit to be honest.

Q3. Did you try any of the Primula PODs recipes from the Primula website? If so which one(s) and what did you think of them?
No, I had a quick look on the recipe section on the Primula website and couldn't find them?

Q4. When were the PODs eaten? As an after school snack? As part of a lunchbox? As a treat? etc
By me as a snack. If DD was to have them it would either be as a snack or as part of a "picnic" style lunch, with chopped up ham, veg sticks etc. I did also melt one slightly in the microwave so I could spread it to have in a sandwich which worked ok but kind of defeats the point when I could of just bought the cheese spread I guess!

Q5. "Primula PODs are a good source of calcium", would this statement encourage you to buy this product or not? If so, why? If not why not?
I would assume cheese products generally are so I don't think I'd be bothered one way or another by it.

Q6. What features do you ideally want to see from children's snacks?
Easy to transport/eat out and about. Minimal added salt. Fruit/veg content as DD has recently become a pain to get "regular" fruit and veg into.

Q7. If it came up in conversation would you recommend Primula PODs to a friend/relative? If so why? If not, why not?
Dependent on price, yes. They make a nice change from babybels but I don't buy snack cheese regularly due to budget, I'd rather just chop up some cheddar if we're at home.

Now just a couple of questions about the POD Island website www.primulapods.co.uk

Q1. What did your DC think of the website? Were there any aspects they particularly liked or disliked? Did they have a favourite area of the site?
I tried to view it on my phone at couldn't see much. From reading previous comments I think it would be a bit old for DD just yet. She's just starting to grasp the concept of grandma's Kindle for drawing apps and watches nursery rhyme videos on youtube with her other granny but doesn't really have any websites that she can interract with yet...I think...I can't say I've tried!

Q2. Is there anything else you'd like to see on the website? Any areas for improvements? What did you like most about the website for your child(ren)?
N/A as above.

kez1212 · 21/12/2012 22:34

Q1. Who in your family tried the Primula PODs? What were your/their initial impressions?
Both my DS's, 2yrs and 9 months and myself. DH refused.
My DS1 was very excited initially about trying it.

Q2. In particular what did you and your family think of the following in relation to both the original PODs and the Cheese N Chive PODs?
None of us liked the texture really. I liked the taste of the plain one as did my 9 month old. The chive one wasnt popular at all, both boys spat it out. The packaging was great though. DS1 could open it easily and he was convinced it was a fish for ages!

Q3. Did you try any of the Primula PODs recipes from the Primula website? If so which one(s) and what did you think of them?
No, we did look at the recipes but didnt have chance to make them.

Q4. When were the PODs eaten? As an after school snack? As part of a lunchbox? As a treat? etc
As an after nursery snack.

Q5. "Primula PODs are a good source of calcium", would this statement encourage you to buy this product or not? If so, why? If not why not?
Cheese- generally known for its calcium!

Q6. What features do you ideally want to see from children's snacks?
Healthy, handy, not too expensive and recyclable
Q7. If it came up in conversation would you recommend Primula PODs to a friend/relative? If so why? If not, why not?
I'd probably say that we had tried them and they were ok, no great shakes though and better things on the market.

Q1. What did your DC think of the website? Were there any aspects they particularly liked or disliked? Did they have a favourite area of the site?
Q2. Is there anything else you'd like to see on the website? Any areas for improvements? What did you like most about the website for your child(ren)?
The website was slow and seemed to be geared up for children older than mine so it was really a winner.

Thanks for the cheese

PeahenTailFeathers · 22/12/2012 07:00

Q1. Who in your family tried the Primula PODs? What were your/their initial impressions?
I gave small pieces to my 7 month old daughter and she quite enjoyed them. Of course, I had to taste them too!

Q2. In particular what did you and your family think of the following in relation to both the original PODs and the Cheese N Chive PODs?

  • Texture
They were soft and easy for my daughter to eat. I thought they were a little rubbery, but that's not necessarily a bad thing and they went very well wit a cracker.
  • Taste
My daughter liked both flavours. I thought the plain cheese was okay, but the chive was much nicer.
  • Packaging
They were really easy to open but the packaging was still sturdy enough to protect them if used in lunch boxes.

Q3. Did you try any of the Primula PODs recipes from the Primula website? If so which one(s) and what did you think of them?
I haven't tried any, although the pizza and skewer recipes look fun for children to make, so I may try tem when my daughter's older.

Q4. When were the PODs eaten? As an after school snack? As part of a lunchbox? As a treat? etc
With lunch or dinner for my daughter: I ate them as a snack.

Q5. "Primula PODs are a good source of calcium", would this statement encourage you to buy this product or not? If so, why? If not why not?
Yes, because I obviously want my daughter to eat nutritious food and I'm a sucker for child-friendly products that advertise themselves this way.

Q6. What features do you ideally want to see from children's snacks?
I want them to be healthy, nutritious and tasty. I prefer organic products.

Q7. If it came up in conversation would you recommend Primula PODs to a friend/relative? If so why? If not, why not?
I'd recommend the chive more because I thought they were much tastier but yes, I would recommend PODS because they make good snacks for children.

Now just a couple of questions about the POD Island website

Q1. What did your DC think of the website? Were there any aspects they particularly liked or disliked? Did they have a favourite area of the site?
DD liked the pretty mice but she's too young to play the games yet

PutOnAHappyFace · 22/12/2012 17:57

Q1. 3 DCs 18months, 4 and 5. Also Dp tried them. No one was overly keen on the taste but the DCs were excited when they seen them.

Q2.

  • Texture- strange but like any other snack cheese
  • Taste- didnt like at all
  • Packaging- really loved the packaging.

Q3. No we didnt try any.

Q4. After school snack as we got home and the DCs where searching for a snack.

Q5. yes it would, as a snack i would want some sort of goodness in it.

Q6. something they are interested in and would choose but also health.

Q7. i would say we have tried them but didnt like them but someone else liked other cheese snacks could possible be a fan.

The DCs wasnt interested in playing on the website.

Catbag · 22/12/2012 18:31

Q1. Who in your family tried the Primula PODs? What were your/their initial impressions?
Me, 4yr old DD, 10yr old DD and 13yr old DS. Initial impressions were extremely favourable. The packaging was so easy to open that youngest DD had no trouble at all. The elder children liked the way the cheese popped out of the packets. Comparisons were made to Mini Babybel due to the shape.

Q2. In particular what did you and your family think of the following in relation to both the original PODs and the Cheese N Chive PODs?- Texture- Taste- Packaging
Everyone agreed that the pods were superior to babybel under all three headings. The texture was perfect- firm, but not waxy like babybel. The taste was great, just like solid Primula, and the cheese and chive version went down particularly well. As mentioned, the packaging was a hit. We thought it was well thought out, attractive to younger children and incredibly easy to open.

Q3. Did you try any of the Primula PODs recipes from the Primula website? If so which one(s) and what did you think of them?
We didn't try the recipes from the website, but we did have a look at them. The children decided that they were less interested in that as an idea as they would prefer to cook with proper cheese. They did not think that the pods would cook very well and, as complete cheese fiends, the pods' appeal was being able to pop out the cheese and eat it straight away.

Q4. When were the PODs eaten? As an after school snack? As part of a lunchbox? As a treat? etc
They were eaten after school, before dinner, and were substantial enough to stave off any ravenous rumblings from the children without ruining their appetite for the evening meal. This is definitely a plus. I could see them working well in a lunchbox.

Q5. "Primula PODs are a good source of calcium", would this statement encourage you to buy this product or not? If so, why? If not why not?
No, it wouldn't. It is cheese, and as such I would expect that it was a good source of calcium. It feels a little patronising to have it restated.

Q6. What features do you ideally want to see from children's snacks?
Easy to open packaging without question, but also for the snack itself to be piling nutritionally appropriate goodness into my kids.

Q7. If it came up in conversation would you recommend Primula PODs to a friend/relative? If so why? If not, why not?
As it is at the moment I absolutely would. However, this realistically would hang upon the cost of the pods. Without knowing what price you intend to charge, it is fairly difficult to make a judgement about value.

1. What did your DC think of the website?
My 10yr old DD thought it was all a little babyish, but that said she did enjoy sitting with her little sister and reading things to her. The 4yr old DD liked the fact the website was aimed at children.

Were there any aspects they particularly liked or disliked? Did they have a favourite area of the site?
It was a little heavy on the text for my littlest one's liking, and while she did not mind having some of it read to her, she did get a little bored after a bit. She loved the printable pictures and the music that played over the story board bit. I have to say honestly that I hated the music!

Q2. Is there anything else you'd like to see on the website? Any areas for improvements? What did you like most about the website for your child(ren)?
It is great to see children engaging with websites aimed at them, as they will explore the digital environment happily. Personally,I would like to see the site better optimised for being accessed by tablet. My Samsung Galaxy 10.1 tablet wasn't happy about loading the game zone at all.

Ellellie · 22/12/2012 22:42

Q1. Who in your family tried the Primula PODs? What were your/their initial impressions?

Me and DS (9 months)

Q2. In particular what did you and your family think of the following in relation to both the original PODs and the Cheese N Chive PODs?

  • Texture
  • Taste
  • Packaging

I thought they tasted and had the texture of old hardened Primula that you get if you leave the cap slightly off the tube. The packaging was really good, really easy to get open.

Q3. Did you try any of the Primula PODs recipes from the Primula website? If so which one(s) and what did you think of them?

I tried the pizza recipe that was send with the sample. I thought you were really nice and melted down they were perfect for DS. He liked the melted pods better than normal cheese on the pizza!

Q4. When were the PODs eaten? As an after school snack? As part of a lunchbox? As a treat? etc

I ate them as a snack. DA had his as part of a meal.

Q5. "Primula PODs are a good source of calcium", would this statement encourage you to buy this product or not? If so, why? If not why not?

It wouldn't encourage me to buy them. It's a bonus but I wouldn't go out of my way to pick them up because of this

Q6. What features do you ideally want to see from children's snacks?

Easy to open. Easy to transport. Something not messy

Q7. If it came up in conversation would you recommend Primula PODs to a friend/relative? If so why? If not, why not?

I'd tell people I've tried them and what I'd thought of the flavour/texture. I would recommend them.

We haven't tried the website as DS is too young!

KnittyFoxyMa · 23/12/2012 14:40

Q1. Who in your family tried the Primula PODs? What were your/their initial impressions?
DD10 and DD5 both tried them both, I had a nibble of both as did DP. We were all rather pleased with the PODS.
*Q2. In particular what did you and your family think of the following in relation to both the original PODs and the Cheese N Chive PODs?

  • Texture * Firmer than expected, but pleasant.
Taste- very nice. DD10 preferred the plain, DD5 preferred the chive. Packaging- excellent! So much easier than BabyBel or triangles. Q3. Did you try any of the Primula PODs recipes from the Primula website? If so which one(s) and what did you think of them? not yet, but possibly would do the pizza one. Q4. When were the PODs eaten? As an after school snack? As part of a lunchbox? As a treat? etc after school snack as they are school dinners. Q5. "Primula PODs are a good source of calcium", would this statement encourage you to buy this product or not? If so, why? If not why not? not more than any other dairy product. Q6. What features do you ideally want to see from children's snacks? no nasty additives, easy to open and hold, not messy to transport, not high salt or sugar, tasty and appealing. Q7. If it came up in conversation would you recommend Primula PODs to a friend/relative? If so why? If not, why not? yes, probably, cos they were inoccuous enough, fun and the kids liked them, and they made a change from the usual.

Now just a couple of questions about the POD Island website www.primulapods.co.uk

Q2. Is there anything else you'd like to see on the website? Any areas for improvements? What did you like most about the website for your child(ren)?

  1. They were not too interested, but they don't spend much time on the laptop anyway, we don't have a PC, and laptop mouse pad means games etc are not really possible for the younger and boring for the older.
  2. more recipes and nutritional info.
mynameis · 23/12/2012 17:28

Q1. Who in your family tried the Primula PODs? What were your/their initial impressions?

Dd aged 13 & ds 15 both really keen, especially on the chive flavour which surprised me.

Thank you Mumsnet and Primula.

A1.
I tried the cheese as did my 8yr old son. Daughter wasn't keen to try.

A2.
Texture - Creamy, like cheese spread.
Taste - I loved the chive ones, DS didn't. He liked the original ones, I wasn't that keen on them. A bit bland. I like strong cheese.

Q1. Who in your family tried the Primula PODs? What were your/their initial impressions? Me, and my sons who are 7 and 11. I wasn't keen but my youngest son liked the original blue ones and my elder son liked both.

Q2. In particular what did you and your family think of the following in relation to both the original PODs and the Cheese N Chive PODs?
- Texture We all liked the texture, it wasn't too soft and easy to eat.
- Taste I didn't like either, my youngest son preferred the original POD and didn't like the Cheese N Chive at all. My eldest said he liked them both.
- Packaging The packaging was brilliant, it was so easy to open and perfect for my youngest son's lunchbox

Q3. Did you try any of the Primula PODs recipes from the Primula website? If so which one(s) and what did you think of them? I haven't had time to try any of the recipes yet but the dinosaur pod skewers look fun to try.

Q4. When were the PODs eaten? As an after school snack? As part of a lunchbox? As a treat? etc My youngest son took them to school in his lunchbox and they both ate them after school as a snack.

Q5. "Primula PODs are a good source of calcium", would this statement encourage you to buy this product or not? If so, why? If not why not?
My children get plenty of calcium so it wouldn't encourage me to buy the product however I can see that it might encourage other people to buy it.

Q6. What features do you ideally want to see from children's snacks?
Something that is easy for little fingers to open by themselves. Natural ingredients, healthy, low salt.

Q7. If it came up in conversation would you recommend Primula PODs to a friend/relative? If so why? If not, why not? I would recommend them as my sons both enjoyed them

Now just a couple of questions about the POD Island website www.primulapods.co.uk
Q1. What did your DC think of the website? Were there any aspects they particularly liked or disliked? Did they have a favourite area of the site?
My son liked the games but would have liked more to choose from

Q2. Is there anything else you'd like to see on the website? Any areas for improvements? What did you like most about the website for your child(ren)?
I would like a more exciting competition prize and perhaps more recipes to try.

Q1. Who in your family tried the Primula PODs? What were your/their initial impressions?
DD1 6y, DD2 5y, DD3 3y & DH (I don't eat dairy). The children liked the packaging and thought they looked like babybels when 'peeled'.

Q2. In particular what did you and your family think of the following in relation to both the original PODs and the Cheese N Chive PODs?

  • Texture - they liken the creamy texture and said it was like a bit like a babybel, the children weren't that keen on the chive as it had 'bits' in it.
  • Taste - No one like the flavour of either varieties unfortunately. DH like the chive flavour itself but didn't like the cheese flavour that was with it.
  • Packaging - the packaging was a hit as it was very easy for the children to open but it seemed to be too easy to squash it open and make a mess (DD3 did this) so I would worry about it making a mess in lunchboxes.

Q3. Did you try any of the Primula PODs recipes from the Primula website? If so which one(s) and what did you think of them?

No, as no one liked the flavours so they didn't want to eat any more of it.

Q4. When were the PODs eaten? As an after school snack? As part of a lunchbox? As a treat? etc
After school/work snack.

Q5. "Primula PODs are a good source of calcium", would this statement encourage you to buy this product or not? If so, why? If not why not?

I'd like to see the % of RDA for children to back up this claim.

Q6. What features do you ideally want to see from children's snacks?

Easy to open with out assistance, low salt/sugar & no artificial colours or flavourings, a taste the children like and appealing packaging or shape of product.

Q7. If it came up in conversation would you recommend Primula PODs to a friend/relative? If so why? If not, why not?

I wouldn't recommend it as the taste really let down the concept and that is really the most important part of any food!

Q1. Who in your family tried the Primula PODs? What were your/their initial impressions?: Me, DH, DS1 (7yrs), DS2 (5yrs) & DS3 (3yrs)
Myself and DH wasn't keen on them to be honest. My DS1 didn't like them, DS2&3 really liked both the green and the blue but preferred the blue.

Q2. In particular what did you and your family think of the following in relation to both the original PODs and the Cheese N Chive PODs?

  • Texture : very rubbery
  • Taste : They taste quite synthetic and processed
  • Packaging : The kids found them really easy to open which is a massive issue with other brands of snack cheeses.

Q3. Did you try any of the Primula PODs recipes from the Primula website? If so which one(s) and what did you think of them? : No - they are too mild to use in cooking.

Q4. When were the PODs eaten? As an after school snack? As part of a lunchbox? As a treat? All of the above.

Q5. "Primula PODs are a good source of calcium", would this statement encourage you to buy this product or not? If so, why? If not why not? :
Well cheese is full of calcium so not really.

Q6. What features do you ideally want to see from children's snacks? Something that tastes real, easy to open, healthy and good for their teeth.

Q7. If it came up in conversation would you recommend Primula PODs to a friend/relative? If so why? If not, why not?
No they taste too plastic and processed which is a shame because I would choose these over other similar products purely because my kids can open them easily.

Q1. What did your DC think of the website? Were there any aspects they particularly liked or disliked? Did they have a favourite area of the site? :
It is very wordy so not good for my younger boys who are not great readers. It took a while to load and they lost interest very quickly.

Q2. Is there anything else you'd like to see on the website? Any areas for improvements? What did you like most about the website for your child(ren)? :
It needs to be more animated and might be better if it could be used as an app.
