The folks at Amazon would like Mumsnetters to try Amazon Family on a free trial for 3 months. Those who sign up will receive the following:

  • £10 off when you spend £50 in Amazon's Baby Store
  • Free one-day delivery on lots of items with Amazon Prime
  • At least £50 worth of exclusive offers every month

Here's what Amazon say about Amazon Family: "Amazon Family aims to make life a little easier for parents by saving them both time and money," said Samantha Nash, mother of two young children and Family Manager at Amazon.co.uk Ltd. "Whether it's baby wipes, nappies, a new pram, or the latest must-have toy for Christmas, Amazon.co.uk has millions of great value products ready to be delivered directly to your door. What's more, with tailored deals for Amazon Family members, finding the right product at the right price has never been easier. It's clear that Mumsnetters are good at identifying and sharing ways to enhance family life, and as the Amazon Family programme aims to do just that, we hope Mumsnetters will sign up and start enjoying and sharing the benefits."

We're looking for as many UK Mumsnetters as possible to take part in this - it's open to all with at least one child aged 0-3 years, as well as all those who are pregnant.

The product test will involve signing up to a free trial of Amazon Family for three months and adding your feedback to this thread.

If you'd like to take part, please click here to sign up.

Please note that if you're already a member of Amazon Prime, or have had a free trial of Amazon Prime in the past 13 months, you won't be eligible for the free trial of Amazon Family. See more info on this in Amazon's FAQs on the programme.

You will need to provide your card details so that if you want to continue after the free trial you can (but you can cancel at any time - see below on how to do this). You'll also need to provide some information regarding you and your family so that Amazon can personalise the offers they send you.

If you'd like to unsubscribe from Amazon Family at any time, all you need to do is visit 'My Membership' and click on 'Cancel Membership' to opt out. If you'd like to continue with the Amazon Family package after the free trial period, you'll be charged £49 per year via direct debit. For information on the full package offered after the three month free trial please see here.

Once you've had chance to try the package, please come back to this thread and answer the questions below and add other comments you may have. Everyone who answers the 3 questions below on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one winner will receive a bundle of 20 products from the OXO Tot range including a Sprout Chair (see terms and conditions here).

~ Have you ever shopped on Amazon.co.uk for baby or child-related products before this trial? If so, what items did you tend to buy?
~ What was your overall opinion of Amazon Family? Was there anything in particular you liked or disliked about it? This could be about the service itself or the products on offer.
~ Did you use any of the exclusive offers? If so, which ones did you find most useful? If you didn't use any of the offers why was this?

Thanks and good luck with the prize draw

Hi all - Amazon have asked us to post this link to their FAQs on the programme - hopefully this will clear up queries.

I joined this as I already have Amazon prime. Not sure I'd pay for it by itself.

When I did my shopping I didn't get the £10 discount. It turned out this was because some of the items were not sold by amazon but by third parties via amazon - this wasn't clear in the faqs as it says "sold by us in the baby store" but when you click on the baby store link it goes to the overall store where everyone can sell. In addition its confusing when there are differences between sold by amazon, fulfilled by amazon and third party sales. In order to get the discount you had to ensure you we're buying items sold directly by amazon so I then had to cancel my order and add items sold directly by amazon - I now have enough baby wipes to dress my family in should I want to. I assume the same will be for the £25 off as a prime member.

Then despite my order coming from 4 suppliers, Amazon and three others I actually got seven parcels delivered. Happily as I'm on maternity leave I could got to the door seven times of each bit but it would be better if items were grouped. Two couriers from the same company delivered two packages within ten minutes of each other Confused.

This also makes me think the subscription wouldn't work well. I haven't checked but I assume you can't pick a time of day for your delivery? This would mean lots of missed deliveries. I'd rather stick to Ocado to be honest.

Just signed up Smile

Answers to the questions:
Yes, I've ordered from amazon lots in the past. I've ordered toys, children's books, baby products such as baby sleeping bags, baby bouncers, baby monitor

The highlight of the service so far is the free one day delivery. This will be very useful for buying bulky items quickly. Interested to see what kind of offers come through over the next few weeks.

I have ordered 2 of the special exclusive offer picture books for my youngest dd and great that I've benefitted from the free fast delivery

Thanks for the opportunity to try this Smile

Stacee have you had the amazon prime free trial before?

I have and the link in the OP didn't take me to a free trial page, it just took me to the join now and pay page. It isn't very clear though, I almost clicked then I realised that I couldn't see the word free anywhere on the page.

When I logged out of my amazon account and clicked the link in the op again it took me to a different page that was definitely for the free trial.

I just signed up for this and was also charged the £49 straight away, there was nothing on the pages I went through that specified that I couldn't have the free trial, it was only when I checked my amazon prime settings through my account that I saw that I had been charged - I immediately cancelled and now have to wait for the payment to come out before it can be refunded, seeing as I cancelled within a few minutes I would have thought they could stop the payment being taken. A clear warning that I was going to be charged immediately would have been nice, especially as I had been led to believe I was signing up for a free trial.

stacee if you go to 'your account' and choose 'prime settings' (in the settings box) there is an option to cancel membership, and if you haven't used any of the prime benefits you can get a full refund

LittleBearPad I had a similar experience to you. I am already a Prime member and find its a great service on the whole. Amazon Family bypassed me until the other day when I saw this thread. So I signed up. Read all the bumf, the FAQs was was chuffed to see that it was offering £25 off the first £50+ order. I had been contemplating buying the Philips Steamer and Blending machine (Dd2 will be weaning at Xmas time) which costs £68. I also stumbled across an additional promo that gave an additional 10% off this item. Too good to pass up so popped it in my basket and found I was only getting £10 off plus the 10%. So I deleted it out my basket and emailed them to check. They replied to say that this item was eligible for £25 off and if it didn't work, to go ahead and buy it and then contact them to sort retrospectively.

So I did, and I emailed them straight after to say I'd ordered, it had only taken £10 and 10% rather than £25 and 10%, please arrange refund blah blah. And they replied to say no, it is only due £10 off plus 10%, NOT £25 off plus 10% Angry

Needless to say I'm fuming. But I'm glad I have the email trail to show that they agreed it should be applicable. I've emailed them back politely but firmly telling them that this is not acceptable, give me my refund. I await their answer.

So read carefully. Sounds like a great idea in theory, and given the amount of money parents spend on stuff, it's great to see Amazon rewarding loyalty. But this Family thing seems quite confusing in parts I also checked that as an existing Prime member, that I wouldn't be charged an additional £49 for becoming a Family member as again, there was nothing crystal clear on the website to clarify that. They responded that no, I will not be charged again. But i'll be checking my bank account carefully!

People who were charged, what was the exact amount you were charged? Was it £49 or £48.98? I have a Direct debit showing on my account but it's not identified yet (thanks nationwide Hmm)

bullet I think you can see if they have charged you my logging into amazon and clicking on 'prime settings'. There is a little box in there that tells you if and when a payment has been taken.

bulletwithbutterflywings · 03/10/2012 14:29

Thank you moose, No charge has been made according to that. Just have to wait until Nationwide catches up with itself to find out what the charge is! Confused

Can I just establish something?

Can you not get the free trial if you have had an Amazon Prime free trial in the past?

Report
MooseLooseAbootThisHoose · 03/10/2012 16:47

It doesn't look like it puff

I have two amazon accounts, one where I have had the free trial an done where I haven't.

When I clicked the link in the op I was taken to a join-and-pay-page. I was logged into the amazon account I have had the prime trail with.

When I logged out of that amazon account and logged into my never had prime account clicking the link in the op took me to a sign up for free trial page.

Have signed up using DPs account and don't see the point mostly with the delivery feature.

I tried to order a book for DS, the cheapest was 1p but when I switched it to Prime the cheapest was £2.85 so basically, would be paying for the book and delivery and an extra 4p or something. Hmm

Also, next day delivery. I ordered some things from Next the other night using a gift card I had been given, ordered around the same time as now as DS had been in bed a while and they actually arrived the next day. The only option I am given for next day delivery on Amazon is for Friday.

Followed the link, added my details and ALMOST clicked when I got a bit wobbly about the fact I couldn't see the words "free trial" anywhere. Checked back to the thread and so glad I did, £49 out today would be disastrous! How misleading! Perhaps amend your OP. Mumsnet.

Hi - sorry to be a bit dim, but is this trial not working? I was going to give it a go, but if its going to take off the £49 today, that's not really a free trial!

Amazon prime have debited my account £49 too. So NOT free. I have had a prime trial in the past, this was not apparently an issue when I signed up for this trial. Not happy.

Tempting but now way am I even thinking about signing up until I KNOW I am not going to have the £49 out of my account now.

I am assuming I can have the free 3 month trial, and if I don't like it, cancel it before the £49 is taken???

Am not keen either on regular payments from cards as they are harder to cancel. Prefer direct debits as they are easier to cancel or amend.
