DD had it twice but now refuses it in the cupboard and has reverted tocereal and standard porridge

KittieCat · 22/02/2012 23:22

Still nothing in the post here, think its the patron saint of nutrition protecting DS from chocolate porridge!

Frontpaw · 23/02/2012 10:51

me neither. I think its because they know its not as good as mine!

  1. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?
Its eaay to prepare, and good for them.
  1. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?
My children liked the look of the packaging. The individual sachets werent useful to us as the quantites were not what either of my children wanted. (too much for one and not enough for the other, but they didnt want it on the same day so couldnt share the open packet!) my husband didnt notice the milk measruement on the packet so got it completely wrong first time!
  1. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)?
They didnt think it tasted verty chocolatey - not as nice as other chocolatey cereals. Maybe if it had extra chocoalte chunks/bits to sprinkle over?
Tee2072 · 23/02/2012 12:48

Frontpaw · 23/02/2012 13:46

Maybe testing chocolate porridge wasn't the best idea over Lent...

Tee2072 · 23/02/2012 13:47

Apparently LovesBeing! I threw out the other boxes, I feel horrible throwing out another one, but it's so not going to get eaten!

Questions

  1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?

My son was so happy when it arrived. Arrived as I was looking for lunch for him so fed it to him then. He really liked the bear on the box and ate the porridge happily.
My girls 7 &10 didn't want to try it, haven't been in the mood for porridge.

  1. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?

Easy to prepare, a good portion size for my three year old.

  1. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?

The box is lovely, my son calls it bear porridge.

  1. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)?

My son usually has porridge with bits in like fruit, nuts or seeds.

Thanks for giving us the opportunity to test it!

Frontpaw · 23/02/2012 13:50

Is it that bad? Should I keep the newly delivered box until next harvest festival food drive?

kasbah72 · 23/02/2012 13:51

Mine has just arrived! Will get the kids to try it out later.

KatieBMumsnet · 23/02/2012 13:55

Tee2072 sorry about that - you were on my list of testers who hadn't received the porridge....

A. They thought it smelt lovely and porridgy

  1. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?

A. It is a quick 'Winter Warmer' breakfast

  1. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?

A. A bit of a faff to do, DD1 could manage by herself but it put off DD2 so I had to do hers for her!

  1. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)?

A. If there was a collectible 'oaty' character inside the packet, they would be more likely to choose this cereal over and above others we have. But I realise that this is unlikely to happen due to 'health & safety' issues!

  1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?

DD who is almost 3 was excited when the box came, and couldn't wait to try "chocolate" porridge. Sadly the reality was different. After making it she wouldn't eat it and refused to try. She didn't like the smell or look of it.

Ds who is 1 seemed quite happy to stir it around, and even got some in his mouth. A couple of spoonfuls later saw him spit it out and flatly refuse to try more. And this is from a staunch porridge eater!

I thought the smell was horrible. Couldn't put my finger on what it reminds me of. It tasted bland and someone ought to have told the porridge what flavour it was. It's like someone waved the flavour at it from a great distance.

Looks wise it was paler than I expected, and after cooling it to toddler friendly it looked rather lumpy and unappetising.

  1. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?

I would have said it's an easy breakfast, and porridge is a good fill you up breakfast on cold days, but we won't be having this one again.

  1. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?

The box was ok, we liked the bear. Sachets were good, but one was too big for my two so they shared.

  1. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)?

Um, make it taste of something without the unpleasant smell? We really wanted to like it, but it's just not going to happen.

Thanks for letting us test it though Smile

. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?

I must say DD (nearly 3) loved it. I try to vary her breakfast as she is an extremely fussy and picky eater, but she ate this for breakfast happily, and even asked for it as a snack at another time! I will be buying this purely for the reason that I buy anything she shows an interest in. She said "yummy, CHOCOLATE porridge!" with a big grin.... Grin

  1. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?

Well, key reason is that she seems to like it. And the fact that besides the ambiguous "natural flavours" thing, it is 74% rolled oats - cant go wrong, IMO.

  1. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?

DD liked the packaging because it had a bear on it and looked obviously chocolatey to her (I'd told her some nice people were going to send her some chocolate porridge to try in the post Grin so when she saw the box she knew what it was straight away. I like the packaging too, for the cute bear and it appeals to children. The sachet sizes were too big for DD though, so I've been giving her half and saving half by folding down the sachet for the next day. I liked the fact that even though I poured only half in, the "chocolate" didnt sit at the bottom but came with the oats.

  1. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)?

I think it would be really useful if the sachet was either resealable or had a sticker to seal it, so the sachet sizes can then be suitable for babies, toddlers and school kids of varying appetites.

Well I seem to be way behind everyone else in commenting, but having had a quick skim through I think that we agree with quite a few of you...

I really wanted to like the product - I've never been very good at eating breakfast and I'm trying not to let DD slip into the same habits as me.

DD (10yo) was quite keen for the first couple of days, but the novelty wore off after about three days. She then went back to 'normal' porridge or Ready Brek. I also tried it on a couple of days but have to say that it wouldn't be the first thing that I reach for in the mornings. I've still got half the box and suspect that it may be there for some time.

DD's answers to the questions are in italics below (if I've managed to make it work) and I've tried to expand on them... she's usually very articulate so the fact that she has so little to say is perhaps telling?

  1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?

I liked the taste but I wouldnt always buy it

I don't think that she made any particular comments about the taste, other than it was 'OK'. From my point of view, it smelt very pleasant when I was making it but the taste was a bit disappointing. With regard to the texture, I'm not too sure what I managed to do to it, but we managed to end up with something very odd and resembling lumpy wallpaper paste on one of the days. I don't own a microwave so was making it in a saucepan on the hob so I'm not sure if that has any bearing on it. I was also disappointed with the colour it was just a bit 'grey' in my view - although it is clearly better if it is not loaded with artificial colourings.

  1. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?

I don't know

DD obviously wouldn't be able to answer this one, but I think her responses suggest that I probably won't be subjected to 'pester power' on the other flavours.

I think that the benefits of the porridge would be more apparent if I had a microwave. DD is very capable and could then make her own porridge (whilst she can cook with minimal supervision, I'm not keen on letting her loose on a gas hob just yet). The only problem with this would be measuring the milk in the sachets - I suspect that I might end up with more milk across the kitchen than in the porridge. It might be helpful to print the number of mls of milk needed on the sachets - she could then use a measuring jug / cup.

If I'm making it myself, I can't see any real benefits over ordinary porridge - it's not really any quicker, it's a pain to measure the milk, having servings in individual sachets results in a lot of extra packaging and I would imagine that it works out at a much higher cost than a pack of porridge oats.

I don't think that I would be buying the chocolate flavour again - if the porridge was on offer and prominently displayed then we might try another flavour but I wouldn't seek it out.

  1. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?

I can't read the writing or text the font is not a good one

DD said that she liked the bear, but one of her first questions when she looked at the box is 'What's Glueberry?', so I think that is what she meant by this comment. She is a strong reader and doesn't generally have difficulties with reading information. I haven't looked for the product in store (I live a good half hour drive from a supermarket that is likely to stock it and I haven't had to go to that town over the last couple of weeks). I'm not too sure how well the product will stand out amongst the normal Oat So Simple, supermarket own brands and other porridge type breakfasts. The packaging is OK, but it didn't jump out at me.

With regard to the packaging, please see my comments above for my view on the individual sachets. When you think about it, the box is actually very large for the weight of the porridge inside of it.

  1. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)?

Better packaging and more chocolatey

DD couldn't give any particular example of how she would improve the packaging, but she is a sucker for a fact / joke / quiz so that might help. She would want to improve the taste - it's not something I have ever tried, but I am now wondering whether we could achieve a better taste by stirring a spoonful of chocolate spread into some normal porridge.

Quaker might want to consider a variety box with a mix of the different flavours in it - DD was bored of the chocolate flavour very quickly.

Hope that this helps - as I've said above, we wanted to like it, but were just a bit disappointed in it... it just wasn't as good as we had hoped it would be.
