I added 3 blocks of chocolate to some this afternoon. Tastes MUCH better, improves the texture lots.

Unfortunately it's taken "sweet" to new levels and I think my teeth have dissolved.

Questions

  1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?

The eldest found it too slimey. I think it is finer than 'real' poridge and she likes it thick. She said it didn't taste of chocolate and I agree.

  1. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?

I don't feel there would be any benefit, sorry! I suppose it would be super quick int he morning, but then we don't have a microwave so it would go in a pot anyway. It might be handy for work.
If we wanted chocolate porridge I would pop some drinking chocolate in the milk.

  1. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?

A sachet wuld not be enough for dd in the morning. SHe is 7. I'd need 4 2. I am very very Hmm about the ingredients list. It doesn't tell me anything! Chocolate flavouring is very suspicious indeed. I'd need more details before I substituted very pure and controllable plain poridge for something adulterated.

  1. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)?

Not really, although a seperate little sachet of chocolate sauce might be the mother of all treats Grin

  1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?

Well I tried it on Sat too. Ds declared that he hates porridge and that chocolate and porridge should never be together, so we didn't start well.
The packaging was fine, and as i opened the pack I had a sniff, Nd thought that it didn't bode well as it smelt of that watery vending machine chocolate, you know the fake stuff.

  1. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?

porridge is a great way to start the day and I often have ready brek/instant hot oat cereal at work, usually with honey. I dont have access to a microwave at work, just steamed milk, hence the instant stuff. I have had and do like the golden syrup flavour one. the key reason for me to buy the kids one would be if ds wanted it and would eat it.

  1. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?

I liked the way you measure the milk in the pack, however after 2 mins in an 800w microwave I had a bowl of lumpy sludge, I gave it another minute, stirred it well, then let it sit for 5 mins to cool down then it looked quite good, I had a little taste and it was pretty tasteless.

  1. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)?

as for making it more interesting, i think in ds's case, unless it came with something he wanted in the box, he wouldn't be interested at all.

I managed to blackmail ds into tasting it, but that was as far as we got, he didn't even swallow it. So i ate it cos it would have been a waste to throw it away. Texture wise it was fine and porridgy, but the flavour was awful, and did in fact tasted as it smelled. I don't really see how it can be classed as chocolate, did it have any cocoa in it? all it really needed was a scoop of cadburys drinking choc, or a small spoon of cocoa and some sugar to make it taste of chocolate.

Sorry, I so wanted ds to like it as we are really running out of breakfast ideas. Thank you for letting us try it. I might offer it to the neighbours and see what their reaction is.

Solo · 17/02/2012 15:58

This is only based on Dd and my try out, but Ds will probably try it when he's home again.

  1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?

Dd wouldn't try it, she said it smelled 'yucky' so I tried two spoonfuls of it. It left a nasty after taste in my mouth and did not taste of chocolate IMO.

  1. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?

I used the hob to make up the only sachet that we tried and so it made nothing easier or quicker for me and I would not pay money for this product. I imagine that I could buy plain old porridge and add drinking chocolate powder to it to make a much nicer breakfast. Sorry Quaker.

  1. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?

IMO the packaging looked dull and boring, certainly not attractive to would be buyers.

1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?

They loved the idea of it, and it certainly smelt choclatey. My 4yo DD did not like the appearance of it - she said it looked 'yucky' Hmm. My 2yo loves it. Interestingly - he has his with soya milk. DD had hers with full fat and semi skimmed milk. No joy for her though. DS would happily wolf down this more often.

2. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?

We used to buy the other Oat So Simple porridges - golden syrup etc. I really like the size of the sachet. It fills them up for the morning. It also is quick and easy. The whole family genuinely liked them. I liked that they microwaved easily. The only reason we haven't bought them recently is that they were more costly compared with a bag of porridge oats!

3. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?

Loved the look of the box. The sachets are a good size, and I love the way you can measure the milk.

4. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)?

Not sure- I think we'll go back to normal porridge now. We add cinnamon and syrup/sugar. I wasn't wildly keen on it either. The texture was too fine for me. DS would continue to eat it if I served it every day, but I'm not going to have different things for different people in the house.

I'm afraid it wasn't a wild success for us, but it was lovely to try it; Thank-you.

The other day I posted with my son's thoughts and at the time that DD hadn't tried it. She has now so back again.

  1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?

She said it tasted nice but didn't eat it all which is unusual at breakfast time.

  1. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?

I wouldn't buy the product. It is no more difficult to make normal porridge.

  1. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?

DD didn't like the packaging. She said it was a waste to have little sachets.

  1. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)?

Not for my DC. They weren't blown away by it and without it tasting a lot nicer they wouldn't ask to have it again.

  1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?

DD (age 4) said it was "yummy" and has asked for it every morning since we got it.

  1. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?

There are no benefits that I can see. I would probably not buy the product.

  1. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?

DD thinks the packet is scary because it has a "chocolate bear" on it Confused
I don't think she's aware of the individual packets as we make the porridge for her, but I think the sachets are unnecessary packaging.

  1. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)?

No, she liked it as it was (apart from the box!). But I wouldn't buy it because it's expensive and normal porridge oats are so much cheaper (and you can easily turn it into chocolate porridge by adding chocolate milkshake powder).

weblette · 17/02/2012 17:18
  1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance? Younger two thought it smelled great, older two not bothered. Colour was ok. Younger two love the taste - 'It's just chocolatey enough' from ds2, ds3 the porridge said it was 'fantastic, very very yummy'. Older two not so enamoured, they prefer a stronger chocolate taste.
  1. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product? I like them to have a decent breakfast that doesn't take forever to make - this fits the bill.
  1. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why? Really like the packaging, kids thought it was much more fun than the other Oat So Simple range (which we eat quite a lot). Having the sachets lets them be more involved - ds3 (4) likes to join in so getting him to pour a small sachet is far less hazardous and more precise than a box would be! The portion control's also very helpful and getting the right quantity of liquid makes it far more reliable. We did find it needed an extra 30 secs in the microwave and there was a risk of overflow!
  1. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)? A 'super-choc' which was slightly less sweet for older kids please.
TwoIfBySea · 17/02/2012 17:19

Hello and thanks for sending this to us. I admit to hating porridge but dts (age 10) love nothing more than a hot bowl of porridge with chopped banana or raspberries of a morning.

1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?

Dts 2 - It tasted like normal porridge but with just a little bit of chocolate. It wasn't gloopy and it looked fine, smelled like normal porridge.

Dts 1 - Really liked it. It wasn't very chocolatey but there was a taste of it. It was really nice.

Basically they scraped their bowls clean and have asked for it again. I served it with chopped banana as usual and it seemed to go down well. Dts 1 did comment early on that it wasn't overly chocolatey - I think he was thinking of Coco Pops type cereals - but they both enjoyed the taste. As they've been eating porridge since they were babies I'll take their word for it.

2. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?

I like giving my dts porridge because of all the breakfast cereals available it is low in sugar but high in energy and it keeps them happy until lunchtime. Quaker is an established name so would hopefully guarantee the quality of the product. I do prefer to buy food stuffs sourced and produced in the UK as much as possible.

3. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?

I thought the sachets opened really easily which, considering they are how you measure the milk this is important - it's all quite clever really and less messy. I cook mine in the microwave and as I use two sachets I simply up the cooking time. The porridge itself, I was glad it wasn't completely coated in chocolate which was a worry - it cooked well and the flavour combined with the porridge.

Dts liked the packaging although thought it might be better with three bears on it!

4. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)?

Dts 1 thought a little more chocolate or a few chocolate chips might be nice. I have to say that as the sugar content is very acceptable at the moment I'd be worried about how it would affect that.

Dts 2 felt he really wanted to see the whole three bears theme on the packaging!

I have to say it would be interesting to me if there were offers involved as at the moment cost is unfortunately one of the main factors when choosing cereal however it must always be low in sugar, as healthy as possible but tasty too.

FannyPriceless · 17/02/2012 17:21

Mine also not here yet. I am trying to be patient but frankly I'm feeling a little left out. Also telling myself I can't read the thread in case it influences me when I come to finally let my family taste this stuff!Grin

charlie7 · 17/02/2012 18:27

Overall we liked the packaging and my chn were very interested in what was in it!
It was easy to make though I too thought that the individual sachets were unnecessary, just a big pack would have been fine.
The porridge looked fine once made and smelled nice. However, neither DCs liked the taste! They are 2 and 5 and both have normal porridge every morning, with a little bit of maple syrup on it.. However, they did not like the taste of this- I think perhaps it wasn't sweet enough?
I liked it though as it wasn't too sickly.
Improvements, perhaps a more chocolately taste, less artificial tasting.

  1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?

DD (6) was very excited that chocolate porridge had been sent as post. To our house! She took no persuasion to try it. DS (3) copies his sister, so he too was excited. She eats ReadyBrek sometimes, and said that it looks like that (ie sloppy), "not like mummy's porridge". I thought it smelt odd, although DCs made no comment. DD said it wasn't very chocolatey, however. Er, then DS said the same thing...

  1. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?

A convenient, relatively healthy (low salt, low GI etc) breakfast.

  1. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?
  • The box was brown and obviously chocolate. The bear was liked by both DCs, and I could easily see how they would recognise that bear in the cereal aisle in the supermarket and demand more Oatso (ergo good marketing, not so great for me!). The box's flap did not open easily; I had to rip into it.
  • The sachets were a nice idea - good for portion control, but the one sachet was almost not enough for DD, but too much for DS. Not really sure what the age range of the cereal is ?
  • Using the sachet to measure/pour the milk was a good idea, but did not really work in practice. Will assume that only smaller bottles of milk were used when this idea was mooted at OatsoHQ? As lots of posters have already mentioned, pouring from a full 6pt milk carton in a busy kitchen was a recipe for a mess.
  • Also, IMHO the milk suggested was too much. And there was no instructions for a 1000w m/wave. And cooking more than one together seemed impossible, so it'd be easier to make a bigger batch in the microwave or on the hob - hence no need for sachets...
  1. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)?
Maybe some colourings-in or cuttings out on the packet ? They seemed to like the idea of all the flavours. Perhaps if there was a pack containing all the flavours, I'd be tempted to try it? The biggy though is to get the chocolate flavour right - more chocolate is needed!

Thanks for letting me try this, MNHQ/Quaker!

BeanutPutter · 17/02/2012 18:41
  1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?

DD was really looking forward to this. She was disappointed with the actual flavor though. She moaned it wasn't chocolate enough and that it smelt nicer than it tasted. Perhaps if I had just served it up without explaining the feedback element she would have liked it more. Her words: it's not very sweet, can I have more chocolate?

DS enjoyed it but seemed to like it when it had cooled and thickened up.

She did like the texture and look.

  1. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?

We love these in our house. I get original and sweeten with honey or in the summer we use fresh berries from the garden. I like the golden syrup one. We like the convenience and ease of preparation. The portions are just perfect. They are handy as they store well and don't take up loads of space.

  1. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?

No issues with the sachets. I like the box size. Not much waste and it can be recycled. The bear looked ominous on the packet. Not very friendly at all. The back of the box seemed a waste of content space. I liked the mention of milling in Scotland. I am not keen on the traditional branding meets new bear and funky writing. They didn't blend well.

  1. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)?

Perhaps flavor sachets being separate. Then you can personalize your porridge (tm) :)

I like the flavours already used but maybe add seasonal ones like cranberry and cinnamon etc.

Thanks MN for letting us try this.

corinewmoon · 17/02/2012 18:57

TBH i wasnt a good response from my sons after reading most of the reactions on this thread.
However both of my sons really enjoyed the chocolate porridge. I have to admit that I needed to add a small amount of sugar (half a teaspoon) I dont think they would have enjoyed it other wise.
When i opened the porridge package I have to admit it didnt look very choclatey. It looked rather like some one had just added a sprinkle of hot chocloate powder to the mix. Something i could easily do myself without having to pay a higher price at the supermarket. I cant imagine I would buy this product. If i hadnt been particpating in this test i may have bought it on one occassion to try it out, but not likely to buy it a second time.
I think quakers could try using better quality chocolate ,

Still nothing here, though as it appears the whole of mumsnet is testing they had to miss some I suppose :)

Questions

  1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?
my dd (7) predicted she wouldn't like it - when she looked at it she said it looked disgusting - ds (4) was always going to like it - a cereal with chocolate. He said it was yummy in his tummy. He eat it all and asked for me. I tasted on bit and spat it out - sorry
  1. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?
I wouldn't buy it - I suspect it would be expensive. I love porridge but thought it was gimiky - I didn't like the smell look or taste
  1. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?
We all like the packaging - nice graphics. individual sachets - a faff and if you are trying to make several people's breakfast it would waste time
  1. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)?
I thought it was very artificial in its taste - putting drinking chocolate on plain porridge is much nicer
Giddyupgumdrop · 17/02/2012 20:44

1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?

Only two of my children DD (6) and DS2 (2) wanted to try the porridge. DS1 (8) didn?t like the idea at all. When it was cooked my DD turned her nose up and only tasted a tiny bit. She said it was too sweet and runny. DS2 gobbled the whole lot up but then he really does like porridge. DS2 did go proper bananas for a good half hour afterwards too!

2. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?

I am not sure there are any benefits to buying your simple kids range. The key reason for buying any kids cereals has to be taste with low sugar and no bad stuff in it. We prefer having the normal Oat So Porridge and adding our own fruit purees or golden syrup to them. I would have liked to try a sample of each kids flavour rather than just chocolate.

3. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?

The packaging distinguishes itself as porridge for kids and they like the bear and paw prints. I would have preferred if you could make smaller portions as my kids don?t usually eat the whole bowl and a lot goes to waste. I also don?t bother measuring my milk in the sachets as that usually causes a lot of mess.

4. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)?

Varying the flavours may help. The chocolate was just not nice enough and we would love to try banana, or other fruits flavours. Although, as I said we do this ourselves anyway but it would save me a job in the morning!

Overall, we are big Oat So Simple porridge fans but not of this flavour.

snala · 17/02/2012 21:19

I still haven't received mine Sad

Bibbob · 17/02/2012 22:32
  1. Thy weren't too impressed. They didn't seem to compute the idea of chocolate porridge. They didn't like the taste.
  2. I like the plain, syrup and raspberry oatsosimple because they will eat it and it gets oats into them, slow release energy and heart healthy ingredients. I would buy it if thy liked it and tired of the flavours. Although we do stir our own stuff in.
  3. Loved the bear and loved the measuring sachets.i didnt like the message on the red sign on back of box, a little bit patronising.
  4. We would love more fruity flavours too. And a two person sachet to save faffing about measuring twice!
sarahbanshee · 18/02/2012 07:09
  1. My son, aged 3, liked the bear on the packet and immediately asked me his name and for a story about him. He enjoyed the porridge and said it was yummy and really chocolaty (he is hardly ever allowed chocolate cereals and is used to ready brek with raisins or honey for porridge). He ate about half the portion which is about all I would expect him to have, it made a lot for a child his age. I tried what was left and for me it was too sickly and not enough chocolate taste, but that is an adult palate!
  1. The main benefit for me would be getting a hot, filling breakfast into my son on a cold day. For my son it would be the appeal of the bear on the packet and of having chocolate for breakfast.
  1. As I say, my son responded immediately to the character in the packaging. I hated the individual sachets: it was wasteful, both of packaging materials and also if the product since the portion size is much too big for my 3yo (but I expect might be too small for a hungry 9-10yo). Using the sachet for the milk was really fiddly. I also didn't like the ambiguity of the ingredients list - what on earth are "natural flavourings" and why wouldn't you say exactly what it is? It sounds very suspicious not to spell it out.
  1. To make it more appealing you could make more of the bear character, eg give him a name and include stories about him on the box or on collectible cards inside the box.

Overall it was good to try the porridge and I might buy it again if it were on special offer or for holiday/travelling. However for me it is too wasteful as it is and I could just put a spoonful of drinking chocolate or Nutella in regular porridge to get much the same effect, so we are not going to be regular customers.

  1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?

They said that the porridge didnt taste of chocolate but they liked the smell, and texture. They liked the bear on the box to.

  1. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?

Its so fast and easy to do in the mornings. I liked the fact you don't have to get a jug to measure the milk out.

  1. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?

As I said before we/I liked the the bear and the easy to measure sachets. Didn't really find anything to not like about the packaging.

  1. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)?

I think that they need to be more chocolatey, that's the only thing I can think of.

On trying this porridge I would buy them again but only if they get more chocolatey.

onadietcokebreak · 18/02/2012 08:37

Box looked nice but contents were disgusting.

Even I couldn't eat it.

My 4 yo said it tastes a little like my cereal bars mummy but it's all gloopy and yukky. He then refused to eat anymore.

  1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?

Well, my husband said it wasn't chocolately enough, but he thought the texture was good. There was a faint whiff of chocolate, but not as much as he had hoped. My husband also said it didn't actually taste of anything, not even porridge. My son wouldn't try it at all. He's only 2.8 so wouldn't say why, just refused to try it.

  1. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?

I would buy it if my son would eat it as he usually like porridge, but if it doesn't taste like chocolate, then probably not!

  1. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?

I thought the package design was very nice. I was also impressed that the note included was full colour double sided glossy rather than just a typed sheet. They obviously spent some money to make this an 'experience' for their testers.

  1. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)?

More chocolate! I was talking to my mom about this and apparently in the US the chocolate version has chocolate chips, not chocolate powder and is very chocolately!

  1. Overall, what did your DC(s) think of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids Porridge? Did they make any comments about the texture, smell, taste or appearance?
My ds' are older so not overly taken in by packaging, though the oldest did say it was a nice box and imagined a younger child might be drawn to it in the supermarket. Ds 1 is an avid porridge eater and we have previously tried lots of different flavours and he also invents his own by adding bits from the cupboard such as cinnamon of a couple of squares of dark chocolate. Ds2 tried one sachet and he ate it all saying it was ok but was back on toat for breakfast the following day
  1. What would you say are the main benefits of Quaker Oat So Simple Kids porridge, for you and/or for your DCs? What would be the key reason for you to buy the product?
My boys tend to get their own breakfast in the morning and it is quick and easy to prepare, the measuriing the milk in the packet is handy but the boys felt the amount made it too runny for their taste
  1. What did you and your DC(s) like/dislike about the packaging (including the box and the individual sachets)? Why?
Although teenagers both boys found the portion size ok and individual sachets certainly make less mess
  1. Do you have any ideas about how Quaker could make the Oat So Simple Kids Porridge more interesting for your DC(s)?
Ds1 felt that the chocolate flavour was not as good as if you had added your own and that Ready break for example seemed to have got the choc flavour better. Although the supermarket offered a wide range of flavours the boys were not drawn to choose it again when we did the shopping though I imagine the bear on the box might appeal to younger children. There is already a vast range of instant porridges on the market and I also felt the price in the supermarket didnt make it particuarly appealing either.
