Second Feedback:
(based on white polo shirts and trousers for a 6 yr old boy)
1. Has the uniform worn well or not? Would you say it's durable? Have you had to tackle any nasty stains? If so, were they easy to get out or not?
The uniform seems to have worn reasonably well - the trousers have had to cope with lots of grass stains on the knees (thanks to their football coach for teaching them how to skid onto their knees when celebrating a goal and now turned into a passtime in its own right
); the grass stains have come out and there are still knees on the trousers, they haven't ripped yet and (touch wood!) they won't in the future. They are looking a little paler than the rest of the trousers though. And the hems have come down on both pairs of trousers
.
The white polo shirts are OK rather than great - having bought 2 packs of 3 I'd saved one back to use new on school photos day last week and it definitely looked much brighter and better than the others that had been washed approx 5 times each. They've all been washed in a white wash with proper white wash liquid but still look grey. How much of that is down to my washing machine and how much is due to the fabric I don't know. There are also some unidentified stains on some of them that haven't come out despite being washed several times.
2. How has the uniform coped with being washed repeatedly? And how easy or difficult is it to iron (if applicable!)?
Seems to have coped OK with the washing - trousers have come out clean, shirts come out OK, if a little off-white.
I'm not an ironing person but they have all come out of the tumble dryer nicely and not looked too crumpled.
3. Have the items you bought kept their fit and shape well or not? If you bought any items with pleats in, did the pleats stay in or not?
Trousers have kept their shape OK, polo shirts seem to look scruffy and the fabric doesn't seem particularly good quality - or to be proper polo shirt fabric even. Polo shirts have a big neck which is great for ds1 as he has a big head - but it's actually the longer opening that is the useful bit rather than the big neck, it all looks very scruffy when he has his school uniform jumper on as the neck is smaller than the polo shirt neck so it all just looks messy and crumpled. And the lack of extra thick detailing in the neck means that the collars don't hold their shape very well at all.
No items with pleats in to report back on.
4. If your DC found the uniform comfortable to start with, do they still find it so? If they originally found it uncomfortable, have they found it more comfortable with time or not?
Polo shirts have been reasonably comfortable, that they go over ds1's head without any trouble has been fantastic.
One of the pairs of trousers we bought had the cargo pockets on the side. DS is used to these on shorts and non-school trousers but this is the first time he has complained about them itching or being annoying. And six weeks down the line he still is. He does like that he gets zips on the trousers though - lots in others his age don't.
5. How would you say the zips, buttons or other fastenings on the items you bought have coped with being used a lot?
Seem to have coped OK. DS1 isn't very good at doing the top fastener on trousers above the zip; sometimes I've pointed it out to him and he just nods and says he knows, but he doesn't want to do anything about it as he finds it tricky to do.
Buttons on the polo shirts have only really been opened once and then that's been it - too fiddly to bother with every day.
The elastic with holes in used to adjust the trouser waists wasn't fastened at the end, which made adjusting the waist more of a trial than it usually is.
6. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Matalan school uniform to a friend? If so, why? If not, why not?
I'd mention it to other friends that have had problems with finding the right size shirts with necks that are big enough for their dc's head to go through as good ones to try out for everyday usage (but probably not ones to use for best if the school has a concept of best clothes).
Other than that, if we happened to be talking about buying uniform for next year then I'd mention that it has uniforms but that the prices weren't that cheap - on a par with the supermarkets, and the M&S stuff, particularly at the value end; you needed to be there early on in the summer to have much choice as there was little left by the end of the summer holidays and it felt like I was picking through a market stall given the mess it had been left in; the range (choice-wise, I don't know about quality) for the girls seemed much bigger than for the boys but that it was worth sticking on the list along with the others to see if they liked it, particularly if they hadn't liked the uniform items in the supermarket.
