Did you know 100% of Dolmio tomatoes are grown outdoors in the sun (not in greenhouses)? Dolmio want to get you and your children growing your own tomatoes this summer and have asked us to find 100 of you who are willing to do so. All you will need is a sunny windowsill and some water!

If you are selected for this project you will be sent a pack of tomato seeds.

We'd ask for you to send in some photos of your tomatoes growing at different stages and to add your feedback to a thread on Mumsnet. The photos will be used on the forthcoming Dolmio pages on Mumsnet where you will be able to find out more about the Dolmio products. We'll be asking you to add feedback a few times during the lifecycle of your tomatoes.

Everyone who takes part in this project and who adds their feedback and sends in at least one photo will be entered into a prize draw to win one of two £200 John Lewis vouchers and a Dolmio hamper (to be mailed out in September).

To apply to take part please add your details here. We will email those selected. Seeds will be sent out w/c 25th April.

Please note: tomatoes grown from seed can be grown in any size garden providing they are in a warm, sheltered spot.

Dolmio are also running events at various locations - for more info click here

Good luck and thanks

I've been picked too! I've already got some tomato seedlings but wanted to join in with this to pick up some good tips (previous attempts have not been too successful...)
And I've already got a great tip from Moonbells about the growbags, thanks! I've already got one planted up the "proper" way, i/e. with holes cut in the top but I'm going to get more and do like you suggest.

Another cost saving tip is to use Bags for Life (someone suggested this on another thread) instead of pots, or proper veg bags. But then you still need to buy compost. Lidl did have big bags for £1.99 the other week but I don't know if they still do it.

Another successful person here. Just in time - the slugs are decimating my (very small) greenhouse!

whomovedmychocolate · 26/04/2011 18:16

I grew mine in a pair of DDs jeans last year - it worked really well - just tied a hole at the bottom, filled with soil and plonked tomatoes in. Actually we had aubergines in the other leg.

snorkie · 26/04/2011 19:01

I'm in too :) With starting them so late it should be warm enough to plant them outside quite early on (unless they are an indoor variety), so you won't necessarily need a growbag, just a little compost in a small pot to start them off. Moonbags tip of cutting the growbags in half works really well too - you seem to need less water that way and they are easier to move about if you have to.

ConfessionsOfAnAchingFanjo · 26/04/2011 20:49

Woo, My bean, melon and tomato seeds will have company with my Dolmio tomatos. I will actually have to go and buy some potting mix now though Grin

DramaInPyjamas · 27/04/2011 11:32

Mine have arrived as well. Thank you MN/Dolmio.

Quick Q. Have never grown tomatoes before, how many seeds per flower pot?

Bohica · 27/04/2011 11:40

Our seeds arrived this morning.
drama I sow a couple of seeds per pot & then once they start to grow you pull out the weaker seedling.

I do tend to make it up as I go along though but it works for me!

AnnMumsnet · 27/04/2011 12:32

LisamumtoJake - can you email [email protected] and I will forward you the email?

Glad they are arriving...!

droitwichmummy · 27/04/2011 13:29

Mine have arrived! Lovely cherry tomatoes - they are DS's favourite. Will be planting mine this afternoon.

LisamumtoJake · 27/04/2011 14:03

Thank you Ann, i've email you at MNHQ :) Very excited about planting seeds!!!I got some lovely gardener's delight cherry toms too! :)

snorkie · 27/04/2011 14:04

mine just arrived. I have planted some already, fingers crossed they grow well!

I have a tip for people who don't plant all their seeds this time (and who really wants 65 tomato plants all at once, even allowing for giving some to friends?). I carefully fold down the seed sachet a couple of times to reseal as best I can and place it in an airtight container in the back of the fridge. I find that way they keep and will germinate OK for a couple of years (sometimes more).

ilovesprouts · 27/04/2011 14:13

got my seeds too :)
