Did you know 100% of Dolmio tomatoes are grown outdoors in the sun (not in greenhouses)? Dolmio want to get you and your children growing your own tomatoes this summer and have asked us to find 100 of you who are willing to do so. All you will need is a sunny windowsill and some water!

If you are selected for this project you will be sent a pack of tomato seeds.

We'd ask for you to send in some photos of your tomatoes growing at different stages and to add your feedback to a thread on Mumsnet. The photos will be used on the forthcoming Dolmio pages on Mumsnet where you will be able to find out more about the Dolmio products. We'll be asking you to add feedback a few times during the lifecycle of your tomatoes.

Everyone who takes part in this project and who adds their feedback and sends in at least one photo will be entered into a prize draw to win one of two £200 John Lewis vouchers and a Dolmio hamper (to be mailed out in September).

To apply to take part please add your details here. We will email those selected. Seeds will be sent out w/c 25th April.

Please note: tomatoes grown from seed can be grown in any size garden providing they are in a warm, sheltered spot.

Dolmio are also running events at various locations - for more info click here

Good luck and thanks

isn't 25th April a bit late for tomato seeds? - I normally plant mine in March

PurplePillow · 18/04/2011 22:40

Fingers crossed I get picked Grin

CarefulWithThatAxeEugene · 18/04/2011 23:55

Too right it's a bit late. I've just potted mine on for the second time. They are growing like crazy.

Wonder what variety they are giving away. If it's beef toms or large plum types, you might struggle to ripen them outside.

MummyBerryJuice · 19/04/2011 06:17

Oh no pour and careful now I'm concerned munearen't growing well enough. Have only potted mine on once so far...

ouryve · 19/04/2011 08:56

Already have some tomato seedlings peeping through on our kitchen windowsill, but done, anyhow, since DS1's been pestering for his own seeds.

I'm on the northeast coast and we have such a short growing season that if we sow anything like that earlier than mid-april, we end up with them taking over the house because it's usually too cold to put them outside, or even in a cold frame. This year's been unusually warm, I think. Last year, a few people I know had stuff killed off by heavy frost in their greenhouses, in late March.

supergreenuk · 25/04/2011 21:11

I've been selected. Thought it was a good idea at the time but now I'm wondering how much this will cost me? Compost, pots, grow bags??? Eeek

whomovedmychocolate · 25/04/2011 21:14

Woo hoo I've been picked. Ironically I already have some toms growing quite nicely. Although they are being shielded by the potatoes so I may have to move them.

I have a south facing conservatory, unless the cat eats the stalks or my children sit on them, they will grow.

lisad123isasnuttyasaboxoffrogs · 25/04/2011 21:18

will get to use our own compost which has been making for years and now ready :) Might have to grow them in egg cups though Grin

BehindLockNumberNine · 25/04/2011 21:22

Woohoo, have been chosen Grin

Green fingered dd and food-loving ds are delighted!!

PuzzleRocks · 25/04/2011 22:43

Hurrah. The girls just received this for their birthdays so they will be very excited when I tell them we have been chosen. Thanks awfully MN.

5inthebed · 25/04/2011 22:46

Oooooo I've been chosen. I've never grown tomatoes, should be interesting.

LIZS · 26/04/2011 08:36

yeah , just finished filling the beds with compost today ready for planting so will allow room for these :)

mumatron · 26/04/2011 08:49

I've been selected too, never grown tom's before.

Will need to go and get a pot today, any suggestions on what to get? What compost as well?

moonbells · 26/04/2011 08:57

Fantastic! I got picked! Thankyou! I have several years of experience in growing toms but that all came to a grinding halt with the arrival of DS, so I am so looking forward to doing it again! Just hope that the timing's not too late - I used to sow toms in March... We shall see!

supergreenuk growbags are about the best thing you can get for value. Large plastic pots cost a fortune and it is best to get something a little more economical to begin with. Start seeds off in yoghurt pots which have had holes poked in them. Sit them in another pot to catch drips! Once they are about 2-3" high, with proper leaves, you can move them to a bigger pot or final growbags. If you want some proper pots I'll happily recycle a few thousand in your direction!

Best way to do it is to grow two per bag - don't cut the holes in the top like they'd like you to, shake the bag from the middle so that there's equal compost in either end and then cut it in half. Roll back the tops a bit and then grow a plant in each end - you'll have deeper soil (which toms prefer) which is easier to water without you getting it all over your feet! Also putting support sticks in is easier when it's deeper soil. Get the bags now, and you can scoop up some of the compost for sowing the seeds in, so you don't have to get separate seed/potting/multipurpose compost if you haven't already got some.

You can get non-peat growbags, though I'd research which ones are best as some are not very good at all. Least they weren't the last time I did this in 2006!

Bicnod · 26/04/2011 09:20

Hurrah! I've been selected too. Thanks for the tips moonbells - will start saving yoghurt pots and seek out some growbags.

:)

ProfYaffle · 26/04/2011 09:22

I'm getting some too! I'm notoriously bad at growing tomatoes though, expect photos of disappointed children and pots of soil!

AnnMumsnet · 26/04/2011 12:36

I [heart] you moonbells....thanks for the tips!

Yay! I've been picked.

We already have loads of tomato seedlings, too, but DS1 has been nagging for his own tomato seeds, so these will be his project. Be ready for some "interesting" results!
