Hi all,

We’re pleased to tell you that later this week Justine will be sitting down with Secretary of State for Education Gillian Keegan MP to ask her Mumsnet users’ questions.

If you have a question you'd like answering, you can post it below. Please stick to the usual guidelines - one question per user, keep it civil, and if one topic is dominating, please don't continue to post what's effectively the same question or point (we'll be deleting questions that are repeated multiple times). We'll be limited for time so please do keep questions as short as possible so we can ask more of them - as always, we'll try to make sure we cover the topics that we know are important to Mumsnet users.

We'll be closing this thread at 5pm tomorrow, so please do get your questions in before that - and watch this space to hear the responses. If you'd like a reminder of the format you can see our interview with Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves here.

Thanks,
MNHQ

Do you have any sympathy with striking teachers or understanding of why they feel driven to strike?

When will the promised legislation that grants every child with a delayed school start (ie statting reception at compulsory school age) the right to remain in their adopted cohort for the entirety of their school life finally be passed?
My daughter is currently in year 1, and we delayed her start due to her suffering a severe injury when she was 3. Our borough does not favour delayed starts. It was accepted due to her medical circumstances, but with the caveat that she WILL be forced to skip a year when she starts secondary school. I can not ever see this as being in her best interest, she is flourishing in her adopted cohort, yet there is nothing protecting her as we were unfortunate in the postcode lottery and attitudes of the local schools.

Just calling@noblegiraffe over here...

My question.

I'm a parent and I can see that schools are short of money. What's the plan?

On it, thanks Grin

Lots of great questions, l'm hoping that Justine will be as robust with Gillian as she was with Boris Johnson.

Hi Gillian,

I'm really concerned with 'gender ideology' being taught in schools....

Can you confirm that all legislation relating to sharing of images age of consent etc will be explicitly included?

Also will you clarify "age appropriate" 🤔 and not leave it to chance?

Will the focus be on healthy relationships and respect, e.g. communication?

Do they teach CEOP fully so children know what to do if they see something online? 🤔 How detailed are they?

starrynight19 · 23/05/2023 17:02

In September we will lose a class teacher and support staff. Amalgamating the classes across key stages so bigger classes with no support.
To be fair the support staff are leaving anyway for a job that pays more than minimum wage in their local supermarket.

starrynight19 · 23/05/2023 17:03

Sorry that was in response to what happens to the schools with deficit budgets

Varren · 23/05/2023 17:07

Will you be running a similar Q&A for parents in Scotland? This is only relevant to English mumsnet members. Thank you

NicolaDMumsnet · 25/05/2023 15:47

Hi everyone,

Thank you all for your brilliant questions. We wish we could have asked them all but we chose a selection that we thought best represented the topics raised. You can watch the video here.

Thanks again!
MNHQ.
