Marketing to women discussion - Tuesday 1pm

carriemumsnet · 19/04/2007 11:05

Hi all

We've been asked by a new specialist female marketing company www.prettylittlehead.co.uk to find out what women think of marketing that's targeted at women. By marketing they mean anything from radio/TV/ newspaper/magazine ads to direct marketing that comes through the door. We're not talking about marketing to children (that's a whole other subject) but more what brands you like and which you don't and why? What irritates you about the way companies market to you and which brands or products should be more aimed at women which currently seem completely focused on men. Do you think advertisers try and make you feel good or bad about yourself in order to flog their products to you? Who or what do you trust for advice on products ? (need we ask? ) There is of course no compulsion to take part in the debate/discussion, and as usual with online chats you can post your thoughts in advance, but anyone who joins in between 1pm Tues and 1pm Weds (to give all the night shift a chance) will be entered into this week's competition.

Hope to see you there

ditto the forensic-science Audi one where they take samples from its LCD screen.

Actually most car ads are pretty good - is it because they have huge budgets or because they're designed to appeal to men, I wonder

Hopeitwontbebig · 24/04/2007 13:40

I also second the weightwatchers advert... love it! And Honda/Citroen adverts.

katzg · 24/04/2007 13:41

i like the idea of greener more ethical products but don't always choose to buy them, greenifying my current products would work best on me, i'm not good at change

NormaStanleyfletcher · 24/04/2007 13:42

I hate some ads that are directed at men as well ("Don't ask for any help on a Thursday!" or whatever it was for one of those LadsMags such as Zoo etc - mind you I hate the product too )

Hopeitwontbebig · 24/04/2007 13:43

I'd like to add, that I was once seduced by a well known brand face cream (helped by the fact it was on offer!) and it brought me out in a TERRIBLE rash, it took weeks to disappear! The worst thing was, it was advertised as being gentle etc etc.

Taylormama · 24/04/2007 13:44

also why the obsession with air fresheners etc - a totally unecessary product but advertised continually

wildwoman · 24/04/2007 13:44

I tell you what does work on me...I have so much guilt about EVERYTHING (global warming, not being nice to poor old DP, being a pants mother, not buying organic becuase I am a pauper, dodging the PTA before school fetes/discos etc the list goes on) that if some of the money goes to charity I will buy it over another brand. Came hope with a trolley load of pink products because it they made a donation to breast cancer charities.

Rumpel · 24/04/2007 13:45

For insurance advertising and cheaper products would not work for me. Insurance is only good when you need it - then you find out how efficient and user friendly they are. I would rather pay more and have hassle free claims and an excellent sercvice than short term save a few bucks. Direct Line are great and their ads are okay, would be annoying if they were played repeatedly though. Really dislike that one
SEARCHING FOR CAR INSURANCE!!!???
Most annoying.

MrsGumby · 24/04/2007 13:46

I hate adverts that SHOUT at me as though I'm an imbecile. Safestyle UK windows (scary, scary man) and Confused.com are a couple of culprits but the worst has got to be Cillit Bang...who the feck is that awful little man? The only Bang he'll get from me is a sledgehammer to his skull.

oliveoil · 24/04/2007 13:47

I don't like any particular brands as such, I buy whatever

I hate most perfume ads, weird and/or annoying in equal measure

Ads for celulite creams that do not work are usually illustrated with a 14 year olds thigh

What is the obsession with air fresheners? OPEN THE WINDOW FGS

I do like the ad for those chocolate things that are like Pringles, with the bitchy women and subtitles. But as I can't remember the name of the product, then the ad didn't work now did it?

tbh I find that men are portrayed equally badly now as women, they are usually uselss buffoons in most things I see

bundle · 24/04/2007 13:48

i think cilit bang is hilarious, not least because of its name and its fictional shouty bloke

prettyLH · 24/04/2007 13:49

This is great stuff. Are there brands/advertising that you really like? What is it that you like about them?

Hespera · 24/04/2007 13:50

Agree Oliveoil about men being portrayed as buffoons - all those bank manager ones where they're taking the piss out of the customers.
Just so irritating.

wildwoman · 24/04/2007 13:50

HI I'M BARRY SCOTT!

MrsBadger · 24/04/2007 13:50

Honda and Audi as mentioned before because they are clever and therefore assume we are too.

MrsBadger · 24/04/2007 13:51
Hopeitwontbebig · 24/04/2007 13:51

I also like the Renault Scenic advert, the french one where the car is acting like a dog... good music

lulumama · 24/04/2007 13:51

i like the vauxhall ad with the kids being the parents, the one that ends with 'overtired'

Taylormama · 24/04/2007 13:52

what brands do i like? very few!!!

Like Ecover, fairy, buy a lot of sainsbury's own brands and basics.

wildwoman · 24/04/2007 13:52

Ooh and I hate "celebrity" endorsements. Just because Carol blinking Vorderman can count does not mean I am going to take out a loan from a dodgy company she promotes

MrsBadger · 24/04/2007 13:52

and the old VW ad (was it the Bora?) where the couple argue about whose turn it is to drive.

Rumpel · 24/04/2007 13:52

I really like the perfume ad with the woman in the red dress and the wolf - it is visually beautiful. Chanel I think?
The one for aftershave with the guy jumping over the stones is truly pants!

The new nike trainers ads are good.

Also like the one for Whiskers with the silver maine coon cat.

I really liked the one where your view is that of a child pushing a trolley and the wee dolly thing is on the front with the facial expressions.

Dont understand the Renault one with the ragdolls though - does anyone?

Cadburys snaps is the one you are thinking of like Pringles - yeah it is quite humerous although I have not rushed out to buy them as I am porky.

Hopeitwontbebig · 24/04/2007 13:53

Ggggggggggggggr don't start on First Plus!!!

Taylormama · 24/04/2007 13:53

hate that chocolate advert where the woman doesn't go on her hot date coz she has a bar of chocolate waiting for her
