BojanaMumsnet · 26/05/2017 15:38

Hello,

We’re pleased to announce a webchat with the leader of the Labour Party Jeremy Corbyn on Tuesday 30 May at midday.

Jeremy has been MP for Islington North since 1983, and has been Labour leader since 2015, having been re-elected when Owen Smith stood against him in 2016. Labour’s manifesto for the election on June 8 proposes ‘a Brexit deal that puts our economy and living standards first’, tax rises for the top 5% of earners, the renationalisation of the railways, free school meals for all primary pupils, the abolition of university tuition fees, and a £250 billion investment fund for infrastructure and the economy.

Please do join the chat on Tuesday at midday, or if you can’t make it, leave a question here in advance. Please do share the webchat on social - the more, the merrier!

As always, please remember our webchat guidelines - one question each, follow-ups if there’s time and please keep it civil .

(As we approach the General Election we will endeavour to offer you a balanced diet of webchats with politicians from different parties. More announcements coming soon.)

Thanks
MNHQ

You have my vote, corbyn. I couldn't morally vote for conservatives and lose the NHS, put more pressure on our schools, or cut our emergency services further.

Good luck.

Question: your manifesto is fully costed, yet screams of "how will they pay for it" are rife. How can labour supporters best counter misinformation, in your opinion?

FannyWisdom · 29/05/2017 08:48

(Not a q, Amber Rudd in the debates will hopefully show those who question your popularity the capability gap I hope it goes well and you get the chance to explain the ideas)

stayathomegardener · 29/05/2017 09:13

As you are clearly so stifled by the press what do you have to lose by doing the public debates?
Converted from Green. Joined the Labour Party because of you.
Good luck.
Mrs May scares me!

elgwyn · 29/05/2017 10:58

A follow-on question, on the same topic as my first.

Why did you attend a ceremony to honour Palestinians including Atef Bseiso, a terrorist who planned the 1972 Munich massacre? This was a huge error of judgement and makes it very hard for people not to see you as a 'friend of terrorists'.

I think you owe an apology for that, in a week in which we have just experienced a horrendous terrorist attack in the UK, people are going to be extremely sceptical about whose side you are on, when you have such a long history of supporting terrorists and terrorist organisations such as Hamas, the IRA etc.

LuluLovesFruitcakes · 29/05/2017 11:04

Why does everyone constantly say how much you "support terrorists" and are a "friend and sympathiser of terrorists", what do you have to say in response to that critique?

I agree with most everything in your manifesto, but would really like your response to the above question. As every discussion I've seen online people have disagreed with Tory/LibDem/Green/UKIP policies but mostly all they say about Labour is that you personally are a "terrorist sympathiser".

Good luck with the GE Campaign, I look forward to seeing your feedback on here!

goldaspickledfruit · 29/05/2017 11:07

What advice would you have to the conservatives on their flailing campaign?

(Despite control of media, vast funding streams and online voter targettng)

Do you see similarities between this election and Churchill's 12% lead loss in 1946 in which Attlee won a Labour landslide?

derxa · 29/05/2017 11:16

Do you like being called 'Dear Leader' ?

Daimler78 · 29/05/2017 12:08

Vat on private school fees. Not everyone can afford another 20% and it will increase demand for places at schools that are already strapped for resources. Will the Vat be placed in other nonessential education ?

FinallyHere · 29/05/2017 12:29

Hello and thank you for agreeing to take questions on MN. I an not a natural Labour voter but have been very encouraged by what I have been about to read (not necessarily in the mainstream press) about your approach and your record.

This article http://www.independent.co.uk/news/media/press/the-sun-told-to-put-apology-to-jeremy-corbyn-on-front-page-a6782181.html has got be be good news too.

What I am really interested in, is how you and your team plan to maintain, even grow the the economy, so that the promises of higher spending can be funded from taxes. What resources will you dedicate to ensuring that the seriously rich do not just avoid taxes, perhaps by moving overseas, leaving only the rest if us to bear the brunt of the costs of our 'decent society'? Likewise, how to avoid the taxes discouraging anyone from setting up in business here, so that we do not even get a chance to benefit from some of their taxes. It seems to me that the efforts put into avoiding ( not necessarily actually evading) taxes always outweigh those committed to running the economy.

All the very best for your future success.

goldaspickledfruit · 29/05/2017 12:38

Would you agree that May's dementia tax and refusal to confirm a limit to contributions will be remembered as her poll tax?

TheHoneyBadger · 29/05/2017 13:00

I have been a lifelong labour voter and supporter but am at the moment likely to be an abstainer in this election.

I would like to repeat a question asked earlier, What was it about the Yazidi's foreign policy that caused Isis to to commit genocide against them do you think?

On political spectrum tests based on core values and social ideals I remain a lefty and very much aligned with your policies. However, any test that includes ideas on national security, how to deal with contemporary problems and dangers of the real presence of extremist Islamic ideology within our society or immigration, finds me totally unrepresented by the left.

I am sad to say that I think this will be the case for very many voters and it is why I believe that the Tories will win this election. People who would absolutely have voted for you 20 years ago or in any safer and less 'urgent' time will find themselves unable to do so now.

Please speak more about security and what you would do to address social cohesion and safety and tackling the 20,000 plus known jihadis living in the uk.

73kittycat73 · 29/05/2017 13:56

Hi, I agree with lots of points in your manifesto, but I'm scared implementing them will make the country go bankrupt. Can you reassure me this isn't the case? Thank you.

poshme · 29/05/2017 15:17

How could you think that inviting the IRA to parliament a couple weeks after they killed 5 people including a democratically elected MP was a good idea?

poshme · 29/05/2017 15:21

If the IRA started bombing innocent people again due to fall out after Brexit, would you support them, or the British Armed Forces trying to stop them?

AdaColeman · 29/05/2017 15:47

Hello Jeremy,
Thanks for coming back to Mumsnet. I was disappointed by the media reports after your previous web chat here, as I felt they set out to belittle both you and us.

My question is;
If you become PM, in what specific ways will the policies of your administration differ from those of the Blair/Brown years, to the benefit of the ordinary citizen?

ForthemanyNotthefew · 29/05/2017 16:10

What will you do to tackle extremism and strengthen national security?

I agree there is a strong link between Britain's involvement in the Middle East and the rise of terrorist atrocities here in the UK.

However, the reality is we are being targeted by terrorists. Daesh can not simply be negotiated with.

I voted Libdem last election, this time round Labour have my vote

DoctorTwo · 29/05/2017 16:19

Hello Mr Corbyn.

Do you agree with Steve Keen, Ann Pettifor and others that now is the best time in history for governments to borrow and engage in 'QE for the people' as we have record low interest rates? Surely you realise if you give more money to those at the bottom of the economic pile it will cause our consumer led economy to grow?

We can definitely afford it, we have a fiat currency and near zero % interest rates. Maybe we should stop privatising our public services.

I would have asked the same question of you that I asked Mr Farron, but questions about us homeless people don't seem to count. Smile

lollylou2876 · 29/05/2017 16:37

Ho areare the Labour party, going to address the issue of the survivors of Sexual Offences and Childhood abuse:-

In respect of

  • Healthcare (mental & physical)
  • Funding for grass root support groups & charities such as Napac, who are severely underfunded & under recognised.
  • How does Labour intend to use the recommendations from the IICSA.
  • Where does Labour stand on the fact that Mandatory Reporting is still not required in law for all public bodies and institutions.

Thank You

Louise Moran - Rochdale Survivors' Association

Apologies - How are the...

dontcallmelen · 29/05/2017 16:52

Hello Jeremy
I hope you are able to read some of the threads on Mumsnet, some very insightful & knowledgeable people on this site, especially those facing such intolerable hardship with benefit cuts/housing/zero hours.
How can you try & get the message out discussed & debated, what this government have been allowed to get away with for the last seven years has been purely ideological & not for the benefit of the majority of people, otherwise I truly fear for the elderly, sick, lowpaid & children of this country.
Thank you

user1489830224 · 29/05/2017 17:21

Hello Jeremy,
I saw your interview on Peston on Sunday last night. You were excellent, answering all the questions you were asked, despite the interruptions, something we are not used to from our politicians. When will the others learn that the electorate is intelligent. Thanks for being yourself and standing up for all those in this country that need your help.

HelenaDove · 29/05/2017 17:37

I second user. You came across really well on Peston and seem like someone who really cares.

user1496075881 · 29/05/2017 17:40

DWP and I both work in the public sector, she is a nurse - years of no pay rise. We scrimp and save to send our DS to a local private school. Your VAT policy will cripple us - we could not go on. Not all independent schools are like Erin, so much ignorance. Can you justify your stance please? Why give free lunches to everyone? Even those ex-private school pupils forced into the state sector??!! Lost our vote, I fear.

Perfectplonker · 29/05/2017 18:05

I can understand the worries of the parent above re: scrimping to pay to put autistic child into private school as the state is failing them.

My dd ha saitosm and is about to start in September. I am terrified because even with all the scrimping in the world private won't be an option.

If the Torys get in and all those school cuts go ahead...we'll, dd's school is forecast to lose around 14 teachers.

I'll be watching with interest to see the plans around education too.

Not starving schools of finding will make it a lot more likely that my dd could get an education.

messofajess · 29/05/2017 18:55

Hi Jeremy,

We are such avid supporters of you personally in our household. I don't have a question but I do worry about your self esteem quite often. I just wanted to say that. I hope you know how awesome you are.
