Hello,

We’re pleased to announce a webchat with the leader of the Labour Party Jeremy Corbyn on Tuesday 30 May at midday.

Jeremy has been MP for Islington North since 1983, and has been Labour leader since 2015, having been re-elected when Owen Smith stood against him in 2016. Labour’s manifesto for the election on June 8 proposes ‘a Brexit deal that puts our economy and living standards first’, tax rises for the top 5% of earners, the renationalisation of the railways, free school meals for all primary pupils, the abolition of university tuition fees, and a £250 billion investment fund for infrastructure and the economy.

Please do join the chat on Tuesday at midday, or if you can’t make it, leave a question here in advance. Please do share the webchat on social - the more, the merrier!

As always, please remember our webchat guidelines - one question each, follow-ups if there’s time and please keep it civil .

(As we approach the General Election we will endeavour to offer you a balanced diet of webchats with politicians from different parties. More announcements coming soon.)

Thanks
MNHQ

Perhaps the posters who had questions on antisemitism will find some answers to their queries in it.

I doubt it from the preview the Jewish chronicle has seen.

myrtleWilson · 30/05/2017 14:54

blogs.spectator.co.uk/2017/05/jeremy-corbyn-must-secret-peacemaker/. On Jeremy and the peace talks...

rosestone · 30/05/2017 14:55

@LovelyBath77 It's for the child's benefit/outcomes; not the parents'.

Jeremy Corbyn ought to be ashamed...

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 30/05/2017 14:57

Ffs. Patronising token effort.
Lots of good questions from everyone, which has given me more to think about than he has.

^^ What TwoLeftSocks said.

Perfectplonker · 30/05/2017 14:58

Can I ask mnhq something?

How does the web chat work?

Is Jeremy sat down at a computer, told he's got 20 minutes left, and then reads through the questions himself and answers?

That how it works in my head, or does someone read the questions out to him and types his answers etc?

As an aside after seeing Jeremy on woman's hour he looks ill, like he's caught this bug that's been going around.

TheHoneyBadger · 30/05/2017 14:59

i know this is petty but a) i wouldn't have put ds in childcare for 30hrs a week from the age of 2 and b) he wouldn't eat school dinners if i paid him.

i'm far more concerned about people being able to afford to keep their 16-19yos in compulsory education without the education maintenance grants they used to get. Or with parents losing all tax credits and help (and potentially being subjected to bedroom tax) the second they turn 19 in a society with no jobs for them and where they can't afford to go to uni.

Offer the mummies more childcare and some free rank school dinners? No thanks.

Beachcomber · 30/05/2017 15:01

Have you read it Piglet?

I haven't yet, which is why I said "perhaps".

I believe the Jewish Chronicle' s issue with it is that it doesn't make a connection with Jewish people and the State of Israel. Which is hardly a surprise for a document attempting to reach out to all the races and faiths which make up modern multicultural Britain is it?

caffeineanddryshampoo · 30/05/2017 15:02

At a crucial stage in the Irish Peace Process it was Jeremy Corbyn who was the primary sponsor of a parliamentary motion for peace. twitter.com/ToryFibs/status/868945402229403648

What an own goal for Corbyn. Shock

Oh well, thanks for trying to put on a web chat with him, Justine.

glitterglitters · 30/05/2017 15:06

The 30 hours of "free" childcare is so vague it's laughable. I don't understand how this is feasible at any point. Most nurseries near me don't offer the spaces because it's financially detrimental to them at the moment.

The only people I know who get free childcare at 2 currently don't work and don't seem to want to. They seem to use it to pop out see their friends, go to town etc.

I am self employed and have my dd at home because we're not eligible for any free childcare but I can't justify the ongoing cost when I don't know what work I've got coming in from week to week.

I feel like I've learnt the square root of f' all today and is reinforcing a vote in a different direction b

glitterglitters · 30/05/2017 15:07

And also don't blame @mumsnet because I would imagine that they've been told one thing, ended up with another and despite he additional traffic will be as much dragged through the mud by the media as JC is for this. Which is not their fault at all. Angry

TheHoneyBadger · 30/05/2017 15:10

You can get free childcare places here in my area but I know nurseries are struggling and it sounds like in some areas 'free childcare' is a bit like the 'free dental care' some are allegedly entitled to but can't access because no one will take on nhs patients. 30 hrs will be a nightmare - in reality it will be a two tear system like dentistry.

IDontBowlOnShabbos · 30/05/2017 15:10

Well that was disappointing! Still voting labour because I agree with their policies but I don't see why politicians can't be a bit more up front.
What would have been wrong with saying from the beginning 'Sorry I'm late/have to leave early won't be able to answer questions in as much depth as I would like'. Then just completely ignore biscuit questions!

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 30/05/2017 15:11

The 30 hours of "free" childcare is so vague it's laughable. I don't understand how this is feasible at any point.

He is also giving different cost figures.

Said here £5.3bn. Just said at the race and policy launch its £4.8bn Hmm

Perfectplonker · 30/05/2017 15:12

Just to be clear I wasn't blaming mumsnet, I just wanted a clearer idea on how it all works.

Like did JC sit at the computer himself or have questions read out to him?

glitterglitters · 30/05/2017 15:14

@PigletWasPoohsFriend

Plucking numbers from .....

TheHoneyBadger · 30/05/2017 15:15

JC has a ton of staff who could/would have been reading this thread well in advance and knowing exactly what questions had been asked and which had been repeatedly in various forms or had clear repeated overlaps. It isn't time or organisation or a silly mistake - it is wilful ignoring and choosing to only answer easy q's.

He could have been drafting answers to questions in the car on the way over for example if he thought it worthy. He could have said to one of his juniors read the thread, be ready to give me a two minute summary of the key themes i'm being asked about etc etc.

AllThePrettySeahorses · 30/05/2017 15:16

This webchat has been up for days. Could he not have a look at the bloody questions and maybe pick out some more pressing ones?

angieC1965 Sorry, but that is total bollocks. Mowlam was completely open about everyone who helped her with the peace talks. Corbyn was categorically not on that list.

TheHoneyBadger · 30/05/2017 15:17

He also could've had had someone saying look JC, you've ballsed up not going to see women's footballers, you've cocked up on women's hour please please don't turn up late and leave early and only answer fluff on mn today because... hello??

It's flagrant disregard and not giving a shit even how it appears he is coming across towards women.

Beachcomber · 30/05/2017 15:18

Piglet did you miss my question to you?

Have you read the Race and Faith manifesto? Do you agree with the Jewish Chronicle's criticism of it?

I really don't think it is surprising that such a document would avoid stating anything much about the State of Israel! What would you have liked them to include on the subject exactly?!

angieC1965 · 30/05/2017 15:21

labour is getting rid of the bedroom tax. parents won't lose tax credits under labour and investing in industry is investing in jobs and real apprenticeships not those currently offered and £3.00 and hour until they are getting close to qualifying and then they're dismissed

glitterglitters · 30/05/2017 15:22

🙈

angieC1965 · 30/05/2017 15:23

i am self employed and i was eligible for free childcare. schools offer it to every child that is eligible now admittedly under a tory govt that probably won't last

ohforfoxsake · 30/05/2017 15:26

Why don't you all shut the fuck up about pissing biscuits? Biscuit

Very disappointing webchat. He missed a Really good opportunity to provide some substance.

ssd · 30/05/2017 15:29

I know, the biscuit shite on here does my head in
