Wow! Meryl you're amazing and I'm really looking forward to seeing Suffragette.

I read that you don't consider yourself a feminist but a humanist as you believe in equality. Is this accurate and if so why reject the term feminist when it means the belief that the sexes are equal?

overthemill · 07/10/2015 15:27

How do you feel about the portrayal of women in the film industry particularly older women vs older men eg Colin firth can be the suitor of a woman in her 20s. Also, are you filled with joy and pleasure at how your daughter, Mamie, is building her career?

SwedishEdith · 07/10/2015 15:32

Oh, no, I'll be in work tomorrow so will miss this.

Love Meryl Streep - still cry at Kramer v Kramer and remember when we were all hooked on Holocaust during the 70s.

Who has been the funniest and/or kindest actor you've worked with? Has anyone been a complete nightmare? (I doubt you'll answer that Grin)

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 07/10/2015 15:36

My favourite film of yours is Bridges of Madison County. That book was instrumental in my leaving a safe, enjoyable well-paid job because it wasn't enough.

Do you think she should have got out of the car at the traffic lights and jumped on the back of the truck? Would you have? Every time I watch it I shriek "get out of the car you daft bint" even though I know the ending isn't going to change.

ophiotaurus · 07/10/2015 15:41

Wow how exciting! Meryl Streep is my favourite actor!

What has been your favourite role?
Also, do you think the gender divide in the film industry will ever close?

Devora · 07/10/2015 16:11

Wow, what a coup MN Grin. I won't be able to be at the webchat because I will be at a screening of Suffragette.

Here's my question: Sylvia or Emmeline Pankhurst, which gets your vote?

Berylpeep · 07/10/2015 16:18

HI Meryl,

If you ever need anyone to portray you in a film about your life, you need to pick me! I get told I look like you all the time - hence the username!

Hugs,
Beryl xxxxx

AGreatBigWorld · 07/10/2015 16:20

Hi Meryl. I am a huge fan of your work. Which of all of the characters you have played is your favourite. As an aside i have lost count of the amount of times i have seen Mama Mia! Lucky you having three such handsome men to work with!!!

BitOfFun · 07/10/2015 16:25

This is amazing, I so admire Meryl's work!

Meryl, your ear for accents is incredible- which one have you found the hardest to master, and do you find yourself subconsciously slipping into the speech patterns of people you are talking to? Grin

mazylou · 07/10/2015 16:27

Why do you think it's coming out now about the disparity between pay rates for male and female actors? Did something change, or have you and Patricia Arquette just opened up the floodgates?

Thank you for your wonderful work, I've been a fan since Julia.

pastaofplenty · 07/10/2015 16:27

Hi Meryl - very much admire your work.

What single piece of advice would you give to your 18 year old self?

Also it's my DH's birthday today (8th) - it would make his day if he could say you wished him a happy birthday ;)

ExitPursuedByABear · 07/10/2015 16:30

Squueeeee!

Actually, for some reason I used to have a dislike of you, but that was when I was young and stupid.

I now love, love, love your work.

Every time I visit my brother in South Africa I spend all my time channelling my inner Karen Blixen with

"I had a faaarm in Aaaafrriicccaaa"

Which film has been the most fun to make?

(Bet it was Mama Mia)

glenthebattleostrich · 07/10/2015 16:34

Aargh, I can't think of a proper question that hasn't been asked (though second the sexism in film question) but you are one of my favourite actors.

And what is your favourite biscuit (well someone had to ask) Wink

Pleurepaslabouchepleine · 07/10/2015 16:37

Hi Meryl,

I have been a huge fan of yours ever since I saw Out of Africa and I was a very young child ! You are a great at comedy, great at drama, historic...etc

You have 4 children, how did you manage motherhood and your career when they were really little ?

ginslinger · 07/10/2015 16:42

I'll just stand here dribbling and fawning

woollythinker · 07/10/2015 16:43

The "I'd rather be a rebel than a slave" T-shirt has gotten a lot of attention for all the wrong reasons. Obviously we all know it's a Pankhurst quote and wasn't referring to the US slave industry – but it's an unfortunate choice.

Did you have any reservations about the wording? Do you regret posing in that shirt?

WingMirrorSpider · 07/10/2015 16:44

Wow what a coup!

Meryl like everyone else here I love your work. One of my favourite of your films is Doubt. The acting from everyone in that film blew me away (particularly you, Viola Davis and PSH.

My question is, would you like to do more theatre work (especially over here please!) and if so, which role/play would you choose.

Pantone363 · 07/10/2015 16:47
Shock

Who was your favourite character to play?

One of my favourite childhood memories was my mum letting me stay up late to watch Death Becomes Her and now my DD loves The devil wears Prada. WE LOVE YOU!

diggerdigsdogs · 07/10/2015 16:48

Wow! Well done MN!

Hello Meryl, I'm also a huge admirer of you and your work.

Could you please tell us what one habit you think makes the biggest impact on your day?

For me it's morning yoga before the kids get up. It totally reframes my day. :)

Thanks and I'm looking forward to seeing the movie!

BagelwithButter · 07/10/2015 16:53

I remember going to see Sophie's Choice when I was still at school and leaving in floods of tears (Kevin Kline is wonderful too). I am looking forward to seeing Suffragette on Friday (tickets courtesy of Mumsnet!)

So many of your films are classics, which director do you enjoy/enjoyed working with?

I note that you went to Vassar and then Yale. If you hadn't have been an actress, what career would you have wanted?

Also, what are your indulgences, what do you like to do to unwind?

bialystockandbloom · 07/10/2015 16:59

A-maz-ing!!

Hello Meryl Smile

So - which period of your career has been most exciting / fulfilling for you?

ps I remember you in a beautiful gold sort of flowing dress at the Oscars in 80s (Sophie's Choice year?), and looking stunning in a white dress one year. Sorry to be so shallow but just had to be a bit fan-girl Blush

pps how is it you are just so agelessly beautiful?

ppps My 5yo daughter's favourite film is Mamma Mia.

Cocolepew · 07/10/2015 17:03

Oh wow! Shock
I can't think of a question Blush but I love your work and your daughter Mamie in The Good Wife

LumpySpacedPrincess · 07/10/2015 17:18

Hi Meryl, you recently described yourself as a humanist as opposed to a feminist and I wondered why. I'm a feminist because it's females as a group who are treated unfairly, not all humans, so I feel it's right to help the oppressed group.

So that's my question, are you a feminist? Smile

MmeLindor · 07/10/2015 17:20

Hello Meryl.

Many years ago, I was watching a German talk show called Schreinemakers Live, and you were the star guest. One of the questions asked was whether it bothered you that people often confused you with Glenn Close. The interviewer then got so flustered and confused that she called you "Glenn" for the rest of the interview. You were exceedingly gracious, and answered all her questions politely while Germany collectively cringed.

My question is - what has been your most excruciating interview moment?

MimiLaBonq1 · 07/10/2015 17:30

Please could you share a moment where you were lacking in confidence - either in your professional or personal life - and tell us how you overcame it.

Big fan by the way, you are a wonderful actress and seem like a lovely person too.
