Webchat with Russell Brand - Weds 12 Nov - 1 o'clock

JustineMumsnet · 10/11/2014 15:34

We're very pleased to say that Russell Brand is joining us on Wednesday 12 November between 1 and 2pm.

For those who don't know, Russell Brand is a comedian, actor and author.

His latest book, Revolution, sets out his views for political change - because, he says, "democracy has been taken away from us".

You might have caught his recent interview on Newsnight, which was widely discussed on the boards.

This is his third book, following My Booky Wook and Booky Wook 2: This Time It's Personal and has just published the first in a new series of children's books Russell Brand's Trickster Tales: The Pied Piper of Hamelin, written by Russell and illustrated by Chris Riddell.

Please do join us on Wednesday - or if you can't, feel free to post questions in advance, here.

(Reminder that we only allow one question and one follow-up per user, so make sure to use yours wisely Smile)

Oh great. It's made the Fail. Sad day all round.

Hakluyt · 12/11/2014 20:47

What did people expect?

PetiteRaleuse · 12/11/2014 20:58

Of course it made the Fail. Easy cheap bendable fodder for them. And ^^ plenty of Fail journalists hang around here.

I like a lot of what he says. The web chat wasn't a complete car crash.

PacificDogwood · 12/11/2014 21:02

Al-righty, then.

That was underwhelming.

Although I am quite impressed how Mr Brand managed to restrain his usual flowery language and to do some justice to the thoughts and strategies suggested by many, many people prior to him.

I still don't see the fuss about RB: He is not suggesting anything new or revolutionary.
I am finding myself in the awkward position of agreeing with a lot of what he is saying whilst at the same time worrying about the society I live in that required a notorious sleb to get people to think about structures of power and mechanisms of control Hmm. Really?!

has been a concept that's been around for some time.

You don't have to be a communist to understand that capitalism is moribund IMO.

And, IMVHO, Mr Brand has quite some way to go before he 'meets the criteria' for being a feminist.

I just wish he were give the platform he has the privilege of inhabiting at the moment on the back of his brilliance rather than notoriety.

PacificDogwood · 12/11/2014 21:03

DailyFail?

Jux · 12/11/2014 21:08

Oh shit.

chosenone · 12/11/2014 21:23

I am chuffed to bits he answered mine...and it was asking him if he was a mysoginist. Shock I do really love him and find him funny but this has always been a sticking point for me. So he basically compared it to his nan being racist in yesteryear, fitting in, primal urges etc...not sure about that but im not willing to judge him on his past and he does resonate with me and people I grew up with, and if the proceeds of his book are going towards a community cafe for ex addicts then im v happy to purchase.

LithaR · 12/11/2014 23:13

OMG I love you. yes a useless post but I think revolution is awesome and the guys that lead it are awesome x

PetiteRaleuse · 12/11/2014 23:15

The French Révolution was SUCH a success after all....

miaowmix · 12/11/2014 23:49

Oh gosh friend is mortified at being quoted in Mail, like some awful cougar. Problem is, he is so damn hot though.
Now, how does one name change? (She wants to know. Friend.)

LineRunner · 12/11/2014 23:51

She wants to know how to change her name? Why?

Interesting post there Joan. Granny? Offering it up? And some say RB is a misogynist... Define irony.

BIWI · 13/11/2014 07:35

A good reminder, GreyGardens, that what you post here is available for anyone to read and quote.

Jux · 13/11/2014 09:20

".... not willing to judge him on his past....." Hmm

Mostly people are judged on what you know of them which tends to be their past actions and sayings. So if someone had been a nasty bastard before you would generally be wary of them now, wouldn't you? Or is it different if you're in the public eye and pretty? Because the public face of all slebs is soooooooo true to their real persona, isn't it? Makes me wonder how they manage to reinvent themselves so easily.

SpringHeeledJack · 13/11/2014 09:33

there's wary and there's witch hunty, imo

I've seen more spite and vitriol over the last few months directed at RB than any other public figure- on twitter and elsewhere

and I mean- ANY OTHER

and I only follow Naice Lefties/journos

wtf is that all about?

I can think of a legion Menaces To Society. RB doesn't make my shit list

VikkiMumsnet · 13/11/2014 09:34

Hi everyone. We nabbed Russell for a few minutes after his web chat to find out what he had to say about parenting – and got a little more than we bargained for...

Dear God. He's a one man drivel factory.

SpringHeeledJack · 13/11/2014 09:44

he's right about all of it but ESPECIALLY the baby bath

what a crock of shit that is

Sparklingbrook · 13/11/2014 09:45

He should have mentioned the top and tail bowl and the machine that makes nappy sausages too. Grin

awfulomission · 13/11/2014 10:12

That vid is funny.

I've been critical upthread but I did just spit my coffee into my keyboard at the 'are you giving my kids drugs' bit. Funny. Grin
