Webchat with Russell Brand - Weds 12 Nov - 1 o'clock

22 replies

JustineMumsnet · 10/11/2014 15:34

We're very pleased to say that Russell Brand is joining us on Wednesday 12 November between 1 and 2pm.

For those who don't know, Russell Brand is a comedian, actor and author.

His latest book, Revolution, sets out his views for political change - because, he says, "democracy has been taken away from us".

You might have caught his recent interview on Newsnight, which was widely discussed on the boards.

This is his third book, following My Booky Wook and Booky Wook 2: This Time It's Personal and has just published the first in a new series of children's books Russell Brand's Trickster Tales: The Pied Piper of Hamelin, written by Russell and illustrated by Chris Riddell.

Please do join us on Wednesday - or if you can't, feel free to post questions in advance, here.

(Reminder that we only allow one question and one follow-up per user, so make sure to use yours wisely Smile)

@Hullygully

In the light of the last few posts, do you find that being a sex object detracts from your political mission?

ahem, one question only plse!

JustineMumsnet · 10/11/2014 16:39

@Hullygully

Goodness, that is terribly strict. That being the case, please ignore the first question, Mr Brand, as I think the second more interesting. Thank you so much.

I know - soz - but I've a feeling this one's going to be busy...

RebeccaMumsnet · 11/11/2014 08:41

Morning all,

Just popping in with a quick reminder to please remain civil and polite.
You can read the full webchat guidelines here

Thanking you kindly.

JustineMumsnet · 11/11/2014 11:55

@Hakluyt

And a supplementary to Mumsnet HQ- why are you giving air time to this misogynist lightweight?

Whenever potential webchatees have been discussed, Russell Brand is always one of the names that comes up. Granted he's not everyone's preferred choice (as is clear from the questions that have been posted so far) but we also figured that those of you who take issue with him might well appreciate the opportunity to put questions to him about his politics and his actions. Hope that makes sense.

JustineMumsnet · 11/11/2014 11:55

@TheWildRumpyPumpus

It was only a matter of time wasn't it!

Russell, have you enjoyed many dinners with the lovely Justine MNHQ and her husband Ian Katz editor of Newsnight who seems to be rather a large fan of yours?

Never met Russell Brand before - but am looking forward...

RebeccaMumsnet · 12/11/2014 12:45

@LineRunner

This isn't a MN webchat any more.

It is a thread increasingly populated by RB fans who have joined specifically to come and be obsequious weirdos.

Hello,

Just popping in to say that we have suspended new registrations during this webchat.

JustineMumsnet · 12/11/2014 12:54

Pleased to say Russell is here at Mumsnet Towers and will be getting going imminently.

JustineMumsnet · 12/11/2014 12:56

@AlphaBravoHenryFoxtons

MNHQ When did you suspend new registrations?

At 12, pretty much when we spotted the influx of newbies (as Linerunner did!)

JustineMumsnet · 12/11/2014 12:57

@TakeMeUpTheNorthMountain

Oh my god. I was deleted.. DELETED! In all my years here...

Sorry TakeMe, thought it was a bit strong (but borderline I admit)

JustineMumsnet · 12/11/2014 13:21

@ChippingInAutumnLover

Which MNHQer is typing for Russel?

We have 2 lovely typists - SophieMumsnet and HannahMumsnet - and he's alternating between the two (as it were).

JustineMumsnet · 12/11/2014 13:23

@LineRunner

Which MNHQer is filtering the questions?

Yours got answered!

JustineMumsnet · 12/11/2014 13:30

@ArcheryAnnie

Mmm, that's a no, then - he leapt right over all the questions about woman. I suppose women aren't important in his revolution then. Plus ca change, plus ca meme chose.

Don't worry - only half way through - we'll get there...

JustineMumsnet · 12/11/2014 13:39

@zerotolerancezone

Russell, could you please have a word with MNHQ and get web chats to display better on the app!!! I can't easily see the difference between Q and A. It's a pain. Ta.

Yes - many apologies - we are working as we speak on an improved Talk app - early testing is happening right now - if you'd like to be part of the testing group, do let us know.

RachelMumsnet · 12/11/2014 14:04

Russell is offering up to 100 FREE tickets for the event at the Royal Albert Hall on Friday night at 6pm when he and illustrator and their band of Tricksters will be performing in a multi media performance of The Pied Piper of Hamelin, based on his new children's book. Starts at 6.30pm - you will need to be at the Royal Albert Hall at 6pm to pick up tickets. If you would like to go along, email [email protected] and state how many tickets you would like and the name we should leave on the door. We'll be in touch by 5pm today to let you know if you've been successful.

JustineMumsnet · 12/11/2014 14:15

@KatherinaMinola

I imagine MNHQ filtered the questions and read the 'approved' ones to him.

Nope. We didn't filter - we did suggest and he was pretty game to be honest - only a couple he chose not to answer.

You might not agree with his answers but I would say as webchatees go, but I would say on the spectrum of Mumsnet webchatees he was game side and there was was very little he avoided.

JustineMumsnet · 12/11/2014 14:17

@zerotolerancezone

MNHQ - how do you decide on which questions to ask on these things? Make a list, put similar questions together and then try and do one from each sort of theme? Or just wing it and pick out random ones from the ever expanding thread?

We do the former - and then try and address some of the incoming questions - admittedly in a more of a ad hoc way because it's usually quite hectic mid chat.

JustineMumsnet · 12/11/2014 14:19

'Fraid basic civility rules still apply after chat so if you want to make a point please do avoid personal attacks or we'll have to zap them. Thanks

JustineMumsnet · 12/11/2014 14:28

@KatherinaMinola

Really Justine? OK. But he did rather dodge the misogyny/sexism/rape joke questions, didn't he?

Since you're still monitoring this chat, I'm still horrified (given your campaigns and avowed stance on rape etc) that you would give him airtime.

He addressed the misogyny/sexism one - obviously not how everyone would have liked - didn't want to talk about Julian Assange though. I don't believe he intended to avoid the whole subject though... Nothing like some of the politicians we've had on...

JustineMumsnet · 12/11/2014 14:33

Ha - no never.
Can't speak for Newsnight, of course, or indeed my OH's political views because he's an individual with his own, but as you may know Mumsnet doesn't endorse any political party/candidates - we are for all mums of all political persuasions (well, almost all Wink).

JustineMumsnet · 12/11/2014 14:38

@muminthecity

Hi MNHQ, do you know when we are likely to find out if we've won tickets or not? Just that it's only 2 days away and will involve a bit of re-jigging at work if I am one of the lucky ones! Thanks very much.

We'll be in touch by 5pm today if you've won.

RachelMumsnet · 12/11/2014 18:06

Sorry - we're a bit tardy getting back on the ticket - it's been a busy day. The free tickets for Russell B at The Royal Albert Hall on Friday have now all been allocated and if you've been successful we'll email you within the next half hour. For those who don't hear but still want to go along, you can still buy tickets here.

VikkiMumsnet · 13/11/2014 09:34

Hi everyone. We nabbed Russell for a few minutes after his web chat to find out what he had to say about parenting – and got a little more than we bargained for...
