It's not often we get Hollywood glamour gracing Mumsnet Towers but we're rolling the red carpet out on Monday lunchtime, 5 March, when we're joined by Goldie Hawn.

Her legendary Hollywood roles include Private Benjamin, The First Wives Club and Death Becomes Her. Her performance in the 1969 film, Cactus Flower, won her an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

Goldie is visiting the UK to promote her book, 10 Mindful Minutes, and the launch of The Hawn Foundation in the UK.

The foundation has developed the MindUP programme to help children reach their full potential and aims to teach children how their minds work and how their thoughts and feelings affect their behaviour. The programme has been implemented in schools in the United States, Canada, Australia and, more recently, the UK.

Chat to Goldie live from 1-2pm on Monday 5 March, or post your question in advance here.

Thanks

@Quis

Hi Goldie Has your MindUp programme been developed partially in response to the dreadful violence we see reported from American High Schools? Do you think the gun control regulations should be tighter in the USA, as they are here in Britain?

I absolutely love your films by the way. Smile

Good question. I developed Mind Up after 9/11 looking into the future I could see that the world had changed forever and the world would never be the same for us or our children. I knew that there would be fears, destabilisation and uncertainty for the future, and yes, violence at that time was raging in schools as we have just seen in Ohio. Gun control is a fair question, but a political one, and sadly those decisions are left in the hands of others.

Honeydragon - this is the first time ever that someone has mentioned a sleb on MN that I've actually heard of and like.

Let me have my moment to fawn at the Hawn!

Honeydragon · 05/03/2012 13:13

MonicamumtoRyanDec08 - non taken Smile just wanted Goldie to know we have our good points

AlfalfaMum · 05/03/2012 13:14

Hi Goldie,

What do you think about the recent trend for diagnosing children with bipolar disorder?

GoldieHawn · 05/03/2012 13:14

@Faverolles

Wow! Goldie Hawn! :o I grew up watching your films - Overboard and Housesitter are personal favourites!

Which role is the one you look back on with fondest memories, and was that because of the people you worked with, or something else?

There are many movies that I have done that I look back on with fondness and joy. However, one of them was Overboard. Kurt is a magnificent partner on screen and off, our children were there every moment. We had lots of laughs and loved the film. It was as fun making as it was watching it.

Goldie, I asked upthread if you thought Obama would get a second term, but I have a better question

Does Obama know and support MindUp?

Sue7 · 05/03/2012 13:16

Hi Goldie,

All of this sounds so interesting and I can't wait to read your book. Do the techniques relate to children of a particular age or can it be adapted to those of all ages?

stressedok · 05/03/2012 13:16

Hi there, You come across in your acting as a person who has a happy disposition. Would you consider yourself a proactive person whose glass is half full rather than half empty.

Hi Goldie, I just want to say that your MindUp programme sounds like a wonderful idea. I suffered with depression when I was in my teens and it wasn't acknowledged by the teachers as such. I was just given antidepressants to deal with it which didn't really work as I still faced the cause of my depression every day.

Good luck with it.

Goldie, what is your favourite biscuit? Grin

Hi Goldie

What advice did you give your daughter when she had children? ...and a cheeky second question which is better being a mum or a grandmother?

Thanks from a lifelong fan

GoldieHawn · 05/03/2012 13:18

@cocolepew

Goldie, is there an optimum age for using the programme?

My Dd is 14 and suffers from anxiety and she struggles to have empathy with others. I feel that she struggles so much with her anxiety she doesn't have room for any other emotions, it that makes sense Confused.

would mindup help her, do you think?

Thank you.

My heart goes out to you. It's so difficult to feel helpless sometimes with our children. The age that we start our children is Kindergarten (reception 5-6 years) they begin to adopt these skills with great facility and ease. Your daughter may very well benefit from these exercises. Empathy for others is part of our programme. And,yes, you are right, when anxiety and these panic attacks occur, it's very difficult to feel emotions for others. I would try for her to write a gratitude journal of her very own where she can remember every day 5 things that she is grateful for. If done religiously over a 10-week period it could help her immensely. Blessing to all.

VikingVagine · 05/03/2012 13:18

Goldie Hawn , as in the Goldie Hawn ?

Hi, please can I just have a little "hello" then I can go and impress my colleagues pupils at school (they didn't know who Delia Smith was, but then again I'm in France, I'm 100% sure they'll know you, this is where I stop waffling right?)

I love this question. Yes, I am proactive and at a very early age decided it was important to pursue a happy life, or, rather, a happy mind.

champagnesupernova · 05/03/2012 13:20

Hello Goldie
Thank you for coming on MN Grin Hope Justine and Carrie have got lots of biscuits in

Two questions but they are related -
What is the best piece of advice you've been given?
And what is the best piece you have given yourself?

Also desperately want to ask a shallow question like "what has been your best Hollywood moment so far?" but trying to restrain myself

THANK YOU
Grin

SophieNeveu · 05/03/2012 13:20

Goldie, over here a biscuit is a hard cookie, it's a salty scone over in America I think! What's your favourite?

GoldieHawn · 05/03/2012 13:20

@PBandJSandwiches

Goldie, what is your favourite biscuit? Grin

I like chocolate chip cookies.

Hi Goldie

How can I make my school aware of MindUp or should they already have heard of this? What would you say to the Headteacher of my sons school to make her want to use MindUp?

Honeydragon · 05/03/2012 13:21

Good answer Goldie Grin

GoldieHawn · 05/03/2012 13:22

@scottishmummy

happiness can't be taught it's not reducible to components well rounded,balanced school curriculum,and competent adults make school potentially better place. I think there is a role for pastoral support of course,given the adults are their to model good behaviors,intervene in difficult situations

I'm interested how this is funded?public funds?or hawn foundation

We are a charity. It is funded by private donors, foundations and grants. We also have school systems funding implementation in some regions.

SophieNeveu · 05/03/2012 13:23

I was worried she would tell us about a cheesy scone! Grin Ummm choc chip!

I didn't give my daughter any advice, she took it from what she learnt. Maybe I made a good example.

I can't decide what's better - I love being a mother and a grandmother. Love them all.

LovedayPan · 05/03/2012 13:25

Goldie, would this programme assist "Highly Sensitive Children"? I know there is some debate about this description, but as the father of a HSC I am always looking for anything that will help.

  • and which part of the UK is your best bit?

thanks in advance. Finished typing, starting fanning self at 'talking' to the goddess that is Goldie.

ProfCoxWouldGetIt · 05/03/2012 13:25

Hi Goldie, I'm a little bit star struck, so please excuse me if this comes across as a bit stupid, but how do you deal with the constant pressure to look good and be happy, even when you may not feel like it?
