How do you catch a hedgehog?

This prickly butthead is Jumanji, she/he visits every night to eat all the cat food and, if you're stupid enough to be sitting outside with your shoes off, attack your -worms- toes.

Usually we just greet each other of an evening, however the last couple of visits I've noticed she has something around her neck, it's like blue plastic. It isn't stopping her eating or behaving normally - yet. But ideally I'd like to get it off of her.

Unfortunately she is very fast (hedgehogs can run and it's hilarious) and I don't have a trap.

Any ideas? She's sat opposite me munching a slug at the moment so I don't think she's is imminent danger.

@mrsmacmc

OP I've been following your post most of the evening and I'm glad you've got jumanji safe in the bath. Here's our regular hog visitors 🦔 ❤️
Ahhhh! Look at them! Do they try to eat your toes?

Hedgehogs were my mum's favourite animal. I have vague memories of her stopping at cattle grids to check none had fallen between the bars and become stuck.
Weirdly after she was buried, the vicar told my grandparents that the grave was on top of (part of, near - it was a long time ago and I can't remember exactly) a hedgehog run and did they want to change the plot? Of course they kept the grave she was in as she would have loved it.
A customer in work had an African pygmy hedgehog that she bought in to meet me. He was such a little cutie. If he smelt mint, he would do this weird thing where he'd kind of spit over his shoulder. Apparently that was him being excited. I didn't realise till I met Mr Pickles how noisy they are with the snuffling and the grunting. Bloody gorgeous though

This is even better than a parking thread! Well done OP.

Here's a pic of 'Horace' who we rescued last month to a local hospital.

@WatchOutLurkerAbout

Literally gave myself a contraction (40+3 and desperately trying to get baby to make an appearance) reading this full thread in one go. I'm so invested now in Jumanji I need more Grin
Holy cow that is a lot of responsibility!

She's currently in the bath eating some snacks and some drink. And I'm sure of she could (being a sentient fury potato) cheer you on then she would. Will post a picture of her escaping the scales tomorrow just for you. And if you don't name your child Jumanji then I imagine she'll be wholly pissed off.

@YesitsBess sadly no they snuffle around the garden quite happily even when pooch is out doing his security sniff checks. Pooch keeps a wide berth as he barrelled out the back door one night straight into sonic (the one under the decking steps) as he was sitting quite the thing on the grass 😆 we think the hogs have a wee home under next doors patio as there's a void there and we've also got a hog house set up in the secret garden too in case they fancy a change of scenery 🦔 ❤️

Scare her, she will curl up in a ball and you can easily pick her up. With luck you may then be able to cut through the plastic to release it. If it's not within reach as she's curled up, you'll have to ask a vet or the rspca to help.

Staffy1 · 13/10/2021 23:57

Can I borrow her? Just had the unpleasant experience of stepping on a slug while bare foot. Realised in time not to squish it but still got the disgusting slime that has to be scrubbed off.

Can you take a pic with a really good phone/ camera. So you can zoom in and see clearly what's round it's neck?

Just to see if you can see, and whether could be danger or not?

Before teatowel activity which it won't like at all obv!

In fact if you do that and it's plastic ring or similar. You can have whatever you need to take it off to hand. Keep time caught to a minimum.

Lovely advice were it not for this particular arsehole! If you click 'See all' on the OP you can find our her fate.

*spoiler alert: she's taken over the entire feeling house!

We have a bonkers hedgehog on our road.

Very big. Often to be seen in broad daylight bimbling along on the pavement with zero concerns :/

I thought they were supposed to be nocturnal, cautious etc.

Have they been learning from the foxes?

If you click on 'see all' on the OP it should bring you up to speed. She's fine, been released from the mess she was in and she's off to the vets tomorrow.

Not that she's grateful in any way the spiky wanker.

I love this thread as I have a hedgehog that’s moved into my garden this year.

I do hope Jumamji is sorted out soon, she sounds a right little character! Mine runs (fast) the other way when I try and get too close!

I have a question for the experts though, I’m concerned mine is too small, I’ve been feeding him every night with hedgehog food and fruit which he loves. I’ve stopped putting cat food out as my greedy cat goes out and eats it!! But how can I fatten him up?

I’ll try and attach a pic so you can see. I did originally think he was a young hog but reading this thread has made think he’s not! 🦔💙

Sounds just like her! She has a huge "fuck off I am busy" energy and I love her for it.

I'm currently making her a bag and a wee cage so she can move with us. We might be shite, but we're her shite!

Should you check with hedgehog people if that's the thing to do?

I mean lovely of you but thinking wild animal territory, others around if fancy mating etc.

GrrrlPwr · 14/10/2021 00:28
