AIBU to be heartbroken the cleaner ruined my platypus?

I have a few painful autoimmune conditions, so we have a cleaner once a week. Currently, I’m in a very bad flare, sleeping through the pain, etc. I asked if she could change the bed and I’d just stay in the living room until she was done. I fell asleep on the sofa in just a few minutes and then I awakened when she was kindly telling me I could get back in bed. Already embarrassing.

I sleep with a stuffed platypus every night. My condition causes really painful trouble breathing so hugging him makes it a bit better. He’s just the right size, etc. He’s been on countless hospital visits, hospitalizations, even a few surgeries with me.

I didn’t notice until the cleaner left and I found him drying on top of the hanging sheets that were also drying. I’m ashamed but I cried; his fur is a bit ruined, his insides are all balled and smell wrong; I think it may be time for him to go to the “beloved stuffed friends retirement shelf” with DH’s one-eyed childhood teddy.

But I can’t believe how upset I am. I feel just so sad. I know this is definitely some HUGE hospital PTSD, and fear of facing more pain without a comfort object. Erm… AIBU to ask if anyone has a stuffed friend who helps your fears at the age of mumble mumble over 30? And if you might cry (a lot) if they were semi-destroyed?

Best drip feed ever! I love Platypus and Furious P

N0RKS · 27/07/2021 10:48

This is the most wholesome thread.
I LOVE your DH willing them to recover

dottiedodah · 27/07/2021 10:48

ErrolTheDragon Yes you may be right .However a quick google showed that soft toys are supposed to be washed regularly on a 60c! Whhaat ! Seems though you can pop cuddly in a plastic bag in the freezer ,to knock out any nasties. Then wash him gently in the sink with some handwashing liquid .Probably why the Cleaner thought she should wash him as OP unwell.Just find the spray good for my woolies as they always shrink!

Soubriquet · 27/07/2021 10:49

I collect beanie bears and beanie boos and I have 3(!) platypuses. I love them as they are so colourful

I love your platypus and furious P.

Purple one is called Zappy
Pink one is Wilma
And rainbow one is Pippa

I didn’t name them. They come with names Grin

I hope he will recover OP xx

KingdomScrolls · 27/07/2021 11:13

DS' cuddlies have sometimes had to go in the wash (vomit etc) a spell in the airing cupboard and a soft bristle baby brush does wonders for the fur! Hope platypus and furious P are recovering nicely

ErrolTheDragon · 27/07/2021 11:42

The addition of the ex military platypus and solicitous DH are lovely.

Re The Velveteen Rabbit - I once went to a wedding where someone chose that passage about love as a reading. I never cry at weddings...HmmGrin

I will hold my hands up and admit I have accidentally tangled ds Ted up with the sheets and washed him. She came home from school to find him hung on the line by his ears which set off the wailing and crying. Then she realised he smelt " wrong" which set her off again.
She's 14 and we have decided she will deal with her own sheets from now on as I can't go through that again!

edwinbear · 27/07/2021 11:48

His fur can be fluffed up again with a hairdryer OP. I always blow dry DC's soft toys when they've been in the wash and it works a treat Smile

atleastitswarm · 27/07/2021 11:50

That’s the best drip feed ever OP. I love Platypus and Furious P Smile Are they husband and wife too like you and DH or do they have a different relationship Grin

RightYesButNo · 27/07/2021 12:02

@Soubriquet They’re lovely! And I love the names they came with! Ha!

And thank you so much to all the people sharing stories of their loved stuffed animals in adult times (and some who have passed them on to the next generation). I really wasn’t sure if it was just me, due to the chronic pain, or if it was “ok” for anyone our age who still needed comfort in any of life’s various traumas (wine is nice, but try laying down with it Grin). So thank you for the stories and photos of the teddies and sharks and rabbits and blankets and even beloved dog toys (so cute)!

Can you find a seam and unpick it to put fresh stuffing in? And gently brush the fur?

CorianderBee · 27/07/2021 12:07

She sounds like an incredible cleaner tbh. All of mine have wanted me to leave while they clean

Rubyupbeat · 27/07/2021 12:08

Take the old stuffing out and replace, really easy, then give him a lovely brush, I'm sure he will be ok.

SelfPortraitWithEels · 27/07/2021 12:09

That’s the best drip feed ever OP. This. Every time I read a thread on here I'll be waiting for "... and actually there were two platypuses." Grin (Platypodes?)

Also, "Furious P"... love it.

Rubyupbeat · 27/07/2021 12:09

Btw, my panda is 57 years old and still squeak, I really love him.

SoupDragon · 27/07/2021 12:09

I found DH brushing platypus with one of the hairbrushes in the house (the one with bristles closest together) while watching YouTube videos about fixing fur on stuffies, and I swear I thought I heard him say, “Cmon… cmon…” It was like Casualty

That is just so lovely!

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 27/07/2021 12:14

What a fabulous dripfeed about Furious P! I hope they're both recovering well from their ordeal in the washing machine, and will soon revert to their previously well-loved states.

Thehouseofmarvels · 27/07/2021 12:16

I do toy repairs ! Feel free to message me !

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 27/07/2021 12:17

I have tears running down my face reading this thread. Wholesome is the word! Love it.

SelfPortraitWithEels · 27/07/2021 12:17

It's definitely not just you. And although comfort is a big part of it, I think there are other things too. DH and I have all my old toys, and they watch TV with us and swear and hit one another and make childish jokes - and say disparaging things about us and our DD. (After sleepless nights they will often rant about how we should have stuck with them instead of having a baby.) I've often thought that they perform a sort of "court jester" function. Smile Or is that just us?

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 27/07/2021 12:21

I WANT AN EMOTIONAL SUPPORT PLATYPUS!

Totally get it, Right. Hope your flare settles soon.

DH is pretty stubborn so we’ll see.

Oh oh oh - this absolutely dissolved me. I'm sitting here with fat tears rolling down my cheeks - your DH is fucking brilliant!

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 27/07/2021 12:25

AND I WANT A DH WHO'D TRY TO FIX MY PLATYPUS!

prsphne · 27/07/2021 12:27

I'm 30+ and sleep with "Teddy" every night.

I do wash him on occasion though, and he doesn't feel/smell quite right straight afterwards (although he does then smell of fresh laundry, which isn't the worst thing!) but after a few nights he's as good as old.

I wouldn't panic yet!
