To ask what you dreamed would be fabulous but is actually maybe a bit shit

I think this about lots of things to do with celebrity lives, when I was younger I thought it all would amazing now not so sure.

A particular one I have is that I always longed for a villa on the Italian lakes. We went to a hotel there one year for 5 days ( in the same village as George Clooney ) It pissed down for 3 days. Everything was dark and damp and that combined with the endless queuing for flights and the thought of maintaining a property in another country sort of did for the dream. Not achievable without a lottery win anyway but now I don't even want it.

Anyone else got stuff like this or that they actually got and then thought 'meh'. I seem to have it about more and more things as I get on - I just don't want stuff anymore. Is it just to do with age?

A huskie-drawn sleigh ride across the snowy plains of Greenland has always been a dream of mine.

Then I started thinking about how much dog farts stink. Surely the huskies must fart a lot as they're pulling the sleigh along? I mean it's just something that happens when one exerts oneself, yes? So would you spend the entire sleigh ride breathing in the foul stench of dog fart?

I don't want to find out.

No wonder my mother wouldn't buy me a Mr Frosty. It sounds shit. I think it was on my Christmas list for 10 consecutive years. Glad I didn't fall victim to the painstaking process of grinding ice on Christmas day. It looked so easy on the advert. Liars!

On a separate note. Owning a caravan was always a dream as an adult. Bought one. Never again. No way was it the cheaper alternative. Had to pay thousands each year on site fees. Had to buy plates, utensils, vacuum cleaner etc. Had to wash the outside, service it, mow the lawn, drive down and peg the awning back into place when the site owners rang me up at work and said it was flapping about like a wind sock. Had to drive 2 hours just to peg the stupid thing back into place as site owners 'won't take responsibility for maintenance.' Clubhouse charges a rip off, seaside prices in general a rip off. Moany kids because we had to budget at weekends (in reality who can afford to be on holiday every weekend). Sold said caravan after 2 years. It was cheaper to go abroad or just hire a caravan a couple of times a year and not have full responsibility of it.

Paris. One big doggie toilet.

astuz · 10/04/2021 19:14

Paris - hated it
Bali - what a mess!
Barcelona - awful
working as a research scientist - fucking bored out of my brains, fucking hated it - I worked so hard through school/uni/Ph.d. to get there as well. I just have completely the wrong personality for it.

However, Egypt - I loved it! Me and my sister went when we were around 20 - both very good looking at the time & we had a whale of a time. Loved all the haggling as well. I actually revelled in all the people trying to sell us stuff, it was an excuse to crack jokes about having 8 kids at home and no food (because that's what they always said to us) - and they seemed to think it was hilarious that we threw their own lines back at them!

I thought the pyramids were awesome and I found it fascinating that the horrible grimy city was right next to them.

Spas. Admittedly part of this was/is because I'm not entirely happy with my body, but even if I'd been ecstatic with the way I looked I can't see the attraction of hanging around in a slightly damp toweling dressing gown in between treatments, and drinking a lot of herbal tea. And always having to get out of the really nice things (like the hot tub) because others wanted to get in. And going into rooms where people then carry out slightly weird treatments. I had great hopes about being in a flotation tank, but I spent the entire time feeling twitchy about being alone somewhere with a rather low ceiling. Whilst I'm sorry that they're all having a horrible time with Covid, I can't help feeling relieved that I'm not now being invited to any spa-related events...

I don't want to find out.

Someone I used to work with went on one. When she came back to work she simply put it 'they don't stop if they need the toilet. Either toilet. And then they kick it at you as they run'.

I went off the idea after that.

Pottedpalm · 10/04/2021 19:18

Matilda the musical; why must they shout instead of singing?
The beach, best viewed from a distance.
NYE in Times Square, New York. Couldn't get anywhere near unless willing to be in place all day. No toilets .
Working. Not enough free time.
Retirement. Too much free time.

But I did enjoy Florence, and Sienna even more.

ghostyslovesheets · 10/04/2021 19:20

Hotels! I like to go away alone a fair bit and often pay more for a nice hotel and a better room - 90% of the time I think - well it's okay but I could have booked the Premier Inn and saved £300 - I never learn

2 exceptions - Sea Containers - bumped from a £160 special offer room on our second visit to a £650 river view suit - plus birthday cake (DD's 16'th) due to having a poor nights sleep on the first visit (fight in a room next door).

Pullman Liverpool - fantastic room - free mini bar stocked with all sorts - worth every penny!

My XH ended up with pneumonia after NYE in Times Square

We did husky sledding in Norway and it was amazing. The dogs are mental! But so lovely. It was one of the best things we've done!
maddiemookins16mum · 10/04/2021 19:22

The ensuite in our first house. I’d knock my knee getting out of the tiny shower cubicle every day and it was damp (despite the window being open most of the time). Hated it.

Oh, and my brothers Chopper bike, it was shit to ride.

Pottedpalm · 10/04/2021 19:22

@MaudesMum
God yes, Spas. Hell on earth. I don’t like being in a robe, or massages, or beauty treatments. If I was ever in a position where someone might give me a ‘treat’ of a spa day, I headed them off at the pass.

Lweji · 10/04/2021 19:22

I suppose most places will be disappointing in bad weather and at peak tourist season.

My biggest disappointment was probably Sicily as I was only there overnight and due to the bad weather got to see absolutely nothing. Not even from the plane.

If you go off track, in my experience, you end up finding charming places in most cities.

DenisetheMenace · 10/04/2021 19:22

Sydney Opera House.
Much smaller than we’d imagined and grey and dirty, not the dazzling white we’d expected.
(Many years ago, may be cleaner now. Won’t be any bigger though).

Zimniy · 10/04/2021 19:23

RhubarbFairy!!! OMG!!! Imagine coming back from your romantic huskie-drawn sleigh ride green from inhaling dog fart amd covered in churned up dog excrement!! 🤣🤣🤣🤢🤢🤢

1Morewineplease · 10/04/2021 19:23

@the80sweregreat

Ds2 ate a sausage in a roll in Newquay and then had food poisoning that night. Horrible place , windy and full of poser surfer types and teenagers.

So many lovely places in Cornwall , but not there.

Oh yes ... Newquay. The most miserable of days .

I can’t say that was ever my experience, great fun and no shite in sight!
Inkpaperstars · 10/04/2021 19:25

Stupid really but I always wanted to be a cosmetic counter girl, they looked so glam and together. I got a the job in a top London dept store and it was (predictably to anyone sensible) awful...boring and physically exhausting.

Zimniy · 10/04/2021 19:25

@williowrosenburg - nooooooo! you’ve said the opposite to @RhubarbFairy and now I am TORN!

Not that I can
a) afford it
or
b) convince DH to come with me

@JudgeRindersMinder

Being an adult
Being an adult is bad, getting old is even worse. Dying young is great either.

Well that was cheerful.

ancientgran · 10/04/2021 19:26

isn't great.

Zimniy · 10/04/2021 19:28

@WowIlikereallyhateyou. 2 positives and 1 negative now.

I still secretly want to do it but what if the dream is destroyed by the reality?

the80sweregreat · 10/04/2021 19:29

Anywhere with huge crowds is a no no for me even before covid ! I like watching Glastonbury on tv with a nice drink and food and my own clean loo down the hall.
I missed watching it and the singalong this year :(
Same for any indoor concerts. It's the getting home from anywhere that's a pain too.

Frokni · 10/04/2021 19:30

Big houses, we have 2 DDs in a big 4 bed and it's too much space and a waste of money. We have 4 reception rooms FFS! we chose this house as mum moved in with us for a time. Now I have a room downstairs with a cross trainer, chest freezer and litter trays in it! I can't stand the gaping wasted space! It has benefitted us financially but I am not happy here.

Selfridges London- snooty, packed and poorly laid out
Louis Vuitton- had a friend who wanted to purchase a specific bag that was only available in UK (She's from US). I had never been in an LV before but was disappointed at how shite the design looks.

Am going to stick up for Paris and NYC. I love them both but am highly aware of the problems. I think I can blank them out a bit as they don't bug me that much. However, I would never live in either city even if I won the lottery.

Ferrylights · 10/04/2021 19:33

French Champagne - give me a bottle of English Sparkling Hambledon any day of the week
