Things you assumed were normal

DH bought some weetabix to have for breakfast a few days ago and I was amazed to see him preparing it by just pouring cold milk on and then eating it like that! I can't eat weetabix now but when I was little my mum would pour the milk on, then microwave it, then mash the biscuits in to create something similar to porridge. I assumed at the time that this was the only way to eat weetabix but my husband was appalled at the very idea and after a quick google it does seem like I'm very much in the minority. So it got me thinking, what are some things that you thought were normal, but then you realised that you/your family were the only one(s) doing it like that?

OH! it's cream. I thought 'bream' was oddly specific.

I do this quite often and DP often looks a little askance at me. We grew up from very different backgrounds (a recent one was I genuinely hadn't realised not everyone did the Duke of Edinburgh award to gold ...I honestly thought the schools had to make everyone do it.... his was more the type of school that you practically got a certificate for not getting arrested for a whole year!!)

Recently though a colleague used the phrase " Black over wills mothers " , i agreed and said it was threatening (both Welsh backgrounds for us) and a third colleague got very offended and thought it was a racist statement....we both were genuinely confused and said " No , as in black rain clouds that are about to rain? "

Never heard that outside of Wales, and DP always gets it , but I found put after that it is actually a Shakespeare reference and nothing to do with Wales. So there we go , I gave the Welsh the credit....

shiny An old colleague used to say** that but said "black over Bill's mothers", she was from the Midlands

@Yabadee
I am glad you enjoyed it . You can add a pinch of alsorts of herbs / spices to change the flavour, I added a bit of paprika a few days ago mmmmmm.

@AlCalavicci

Oh paprika would be nice!

Have you tried garlic bread toasties? Heaven! Make some garlic butter and spread that on the outside of the bread as normal, a little bit on the inside too, and add your filling (I like it with cheese and ham) toast as normal in machine. Best thing ever!!

I can make my ears rumble! More so in my left ear than my right though. It's kind of like a yawn through my ears!

Gravy on toast.
Sunday's gravy, reheated and poured over a slice or two of toast and eaten with a knife and fork - the Sunday tea (or Monday lunch) of champions.
Everyone I know (except one) thinks this is the oddest thing ever. Of course, it doesn't work with Bisto - it has to be a homemade gravy with vegetable stock in it or it won't be the same..

Compared to that, DH was quite relaxed about plain digestives with Cheddar, celery and peanut butter and Wensleydale with Christmas cake (or mince pies)

Thank you for this thread. It's been my positive reading during night feeds for the last week.

Meat and potato pie with oxtail soup poured over. Delia had nothing to worry about in our house.

@permanentlyexhaustedpigeon Cheese with Christmas cake is amazing, as is cheese and celery with digestives or cheese and marmite on toast or cheese and

Actually, I think it's probably the cheese :)

A cheese on toast one here. Mum used to use slices of cheddar rather than grating it and the cheese never quite reached the edges of the toast - probably only by an eighth or quarter of an inch and there might also be gaps in the main part of the toast as well. Mum always buttered these. DH never butters the edges if he makes cheese on toast, its not right!!!

I’ve only read the op but it made me chuckle because my dh and I had the same conversation but in reverse only yesterday Grin there is no way my weetabix would go near hot milk - gross! My dh seemed so confused that I was eating it cold.. I’ve eaten them tons of times before but clearly he thought I heated them up!

Making lasagna with a tin of tomato soup and bisto! DH introduced me to tinned tomato's when we moved in together aged 21!

I didn't know it was anything else … my mum has always frugally served up Fine Fare own brand evaporated milk in a tiny jug and put it on the table with dire warnings about having too much. "Cream".

Mum told me that during the war they had Weetabix topped with condensed milk which you had to eat fast, licking it like and ice cream, because it dribbled off the sides. It is just fabulous! ... BTW … and now a favourite camping food of mine (eaten outside without a plate #dirty secrets)

My family treat Crumpets as if they were Toast.
So we might have them with simple butter or with cheese, perhaps a poached egg, cream cheese and smoked salmon. etc. etc. Whatever you can imagine on Toast, is acceptable on a Crumpet.

My husbands family think this is bizarre. They treat Crumpets like a Scone. So Crumpets are only served with Jams or sweet toppings.

@ZeroFucks I'd completely forgotten this until you mentioned it but I used to work in a pub where some of the regulars would always have a boiled egg in their packet of crisps.

MeredithGrey mashing up and then warming up Weetabix is the ONLY way to eat them, eating them with cold milk is just wrong, a crime against breakfast! My 8 yr old son refuses to eat them any other way too!
On the subject of crimes against food, my fella spreads butter (gross) on potato waffles AND he eats bread & butter with his Sunday roast dinner (oh the horror!). Some people just don't eat right.......Grin
