Things you assumed were normal

DH bought some weetabix to have for breakfast a few days ago and I was amazed to see him preparing it by just pouring cold milk on and then eating it like that! I can't eat weetabix now but when I was little my mum would pour the milk on, then microwave it, then mash the biscuits in to create something similar to porridge. I assumed at the time that this was the only way to eat weetabix but my husband was appalled at the very idea and after a quick google it does seem like I'm very much in the minority. So it got me thinking, what are some things that you thought were normal, but then you realised that you/your family were the only one(s) doing it like that?

XH used to put a pickled egg into a bag of cheese & onion crisps. Apparently it didn't work right with any other flavour. And he'd pickle his own eggs. That's one reason why he's an ex

@ThumbWitchesAbroad , yes it does , it makes it so much easier to use even when there is only a tiny bit left in the tin , you can tilt the tin onto its edge a bit and rest it on something till it sets so all the polish is gathered in one 'corner '
to warm it put it on a radiator with a thick towel over it ( it takes quite a while like that ,
a hair dryer , but mind you dont blow the bits out of the tin .
but I find the easiest way is when you have had the oven on for a while , once its turned off pop the tin in there for a bit .

which ever why you do it , heat the polish slowly and just enough or it seems to go grainy
dont use the polish while it is soft you get to much on the brush

@TheMotherofAllDilemmas Thank you, thank you! It actually tastes all right - like very crispy crusts when all soggy with the yolk. Not that I've felt an urge to try it in the last 20 years, seeing as I own a toaster (so did mum for almost all that time...)

AlCalavicci · 10/02/2020 23:02

I can honestly say I never saw the day when I would be posting pictures of shoe polish. International forumConfused
But here they are, I soften this in the oven yesterday afternoon the Sunday dinner. I stuck a 10p in it just so you can see how much of the tin has gone. But how shiny and flat the surface is making it much easier to use. .

Ps am I the only one that really likes the smell of polish ? Blush

I have always eaten the whole apple.
Still alive 👍

Katzia · 10/02/2020 23:37

As a child I loved raw onion with brown sauce on brown bread sandwiches. Might have to try one again! Our church social used to produce weird sandwich creations, like .. chilled sliced Mars bar and sliced apple on bread...actually heaven. And pineapple chunks and fresh cream on white bread... Weird but nice.

Franklymydearidontgiveadam · 11/02/2020 00:01

I just love random things on toast

Frank's cayenne pepper sauce drizzled on toast
Mustard n butter on toast
Bacon on toast with Bbq sauce (maybe cheese too)

Standrewsschool · 11/02/2020 10:43

Can anyone explain what they mean by making their ears ‘rumble’? Not quite sure what this is.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 11/02/2020 12:39

AlCalavicci - thank you! that's very useful. And no, you're not the only one - I love the smell of polish and freshly polished boots/shoes (the outside only, obvs! Grin)

This thread has caused me to start eating Bovril on toast with thinly sliced cheese on top again. Really enjoying it!

Orchidflower1 · 11/02/2020 14:30

I love the smell of proper cherry blossom shoe polish. Tbh I think partly it’s nostalgia.

AlCalavicci · 11/02/2020 15:19

@ThumbWitchesAbroad, you are welcome.

I am glad there are at least a few of us that like the smell, but now I am wondering if Kiwi and cherry blossom smell the same and does brown polish smell the same as black ? > brain hurting now < Confused

JigsawsAreInPieces · 11/02/2020 16:32

I remember the smell of shoe polish followed by the whiff of Duraglit metal polish from preparing for a Girls Brigade Parade (clean shoes and bugle the night before) it really takes me back if I smell either of those!

Marzipanface · 12/02/2020 08:03

Sprinkle nutmeg on melon slices and white sugar on iceberg lettuce leaves. Not normal apparently!

HebeMumsnet · 12/02/2020 10:24

Morning, everyone! We've had lots of nominations for this thread to go into Mumsnet Classics. We'll move it over there now but do keep adding your not-normal normal things!

AlCalavicci · 12/02/2020 10:35

Well done @meredithgrey1 well deserved

AlCalavicci · 12/02/2020 10:39

Thanks MNHQ Smile

FeedMeChoc · 12/02/2020 10:47

@GurlwiththeCurl

I was brought up with one bath a week too. We also used to share our bath water.

I was on the phone to my bf when I was 16 and my mum asked me to call my sister up for a bath. So I said ‘sis! Do you want mums bath water?’ My bf was horrified. And I was mortified.

FeedMeChoc · 12/02/2020 10:50

@Standrewsschool I want to know too

jackparlabane · 12/02/2020 11:20

Ears rumbling - if you've got a bit of a cold and you swallow, you feel/hear rumbling in your ears. Some of us get that even without a cold.

Threelionsandalioness · 12/02/2020 11:38

I always warm up shop brought shortbread and doughnuts in the oven and dip the shortbread in double cream... I mean how else do you eat shortbread my friends think I'm a heathen Grin..... I use warm water to water house plants I feel sorry for them using cold water! 😂

EnsignRoLaren · 12/02/2020 13:14

@ZeroFucks I worked in a pub which kept a special jar of pickled eggs on the bar, for the express purpose of adding to bags of crisps Envy

FlamingoAndJohn · 12/02/2020 20:46

Pickled eggs in crisps in the pub is not unusual here in the East.

Yabadee · 13/02/2020 13:52

@AlCalavicci

Thank you for the cheese on toast tip a few pages back! I’d been dying for roasted cheese for a few days but making an effort not to eat white bread. I usually just put cheese on white bread and into the grill, so the bread is all soft underneath.

But the toasting one side of seeded bread, topping with the egg and cheese mixture (I added spring onion) and grilled was absolutely delicious! I had it with salad and pickled onions and will have it again for sure.

userxx · 13/02/2020 14:43

@Yabadee Ooooo that sounds nice. Is the egg scrambled?

Yabadee · 13/02/2020 15:52

Do u know, it’s not intentionally but when it’s cooked it does taste a bit scrambled!
