Things you assumed were normal

DH bought some weetabix to have for breakfast a few days ago and I was amazed to see him preparing it by just pouring cold milk on and then eating it like that! I can't eat weetabix now but when I was little my mum would pour the milk on, then microwave it, then mash the biscuits in to create something similar to porridge. I assumed at the time that this was the only way to eat weetabix but my husband was appalled at the very idea and after a quick google it does seem like I'm very much in the minority. So it got me thinking, what are some things that you thought were normal, but then you realised that you/your family were the only one(s) doing it like that?

My MIL told me recently that when she was at school they had 'indoor shoes' - which were like slippers but with harder soles. They came into school, took off their outdoor shoes and put on their indoor shoes.
When DC started school (some time ago) she asked if we'd had to buy indoor shoes. DH and I looked at her like this ---> Confused

She also finds it strange that I don't "see" the year as an oval with October at the top and that I don't say 'Good morning Mr Magpie' when I see one. I did once ask her how she knew if it was male or female and whether that made any difference

Mistymonday · 03/02/2020 23:48

Never heard of this until now!

steppemum · 03/02/2020 23:57

ThisMomentIsMyLife my dh is dutch and only spoke dutch to our kids when they were little.
The thing was we lived overseas and so he spoke English to me, Russian t of the house and Dutch to the kids, except he just ended up speaking Dutch to all kids he met!

When I eat Weetabix I have it with sugar and cold milk. I have to eat it while both the Weetabix and the sugar are still crunchy. I haven't had it for some years now though. I too would be sick if it had hot water or milk on it and soggy!

sunshineskymoon · 04/02/2020 00:40

I'm a teacher and at my school the kids wear indoor shoes. Means that the school stays cleanish no matter the weather and the kids can play on the field

sunshinekids · 04/02/2020 00:42

@riftgibbon

We had indoor shoes at school in the 90s. Plimsolls!

Witcher · 04/02/2020 01:09

@fizzypoo I LOVE tinned tomatoes on toast!!! My favourite lunch!!

Also I'm a cold weetabix person! Eating it hot with a porridge consistency is weird just have porridge!

Witcher · 04/02/2020 01:14

I also thought sleeping with socks on was normal..... apparently it's not and dss, dh my sisters, everyone I've ever asked say I'm weird.. .... even when on holiday i wear them to sleep.... I can be without them all day and all night but will put them on before I get into bed,

Weenurse · 04/02/2020 06:23

@Elouera we call it mock chicken and it is in my 1967 country women’s association ‘ fingers and forks’ cook book.
I made some last night for my sandwich today. Yum

Weenurse · 04/02/2020 06:33

Hard boiled egg sandwich, yum

Frenchw1fe · 04/02/2020 06:39

@ladybee28 my 7 year old dgs always has ketchup with pizza. I watch him dunk his pizza and think why?

Frenchw1fe · 04/02/2020 06:45

@sunshineskymoon indoor shoes are fine. My ds's school insisted the children wear plimsolls. I argued successfully that spending money on well fitting shoes and then making dc wear ill fitting plimsolls for most of the day was wrong.
My d's went to school in trainers and put his good shoes on inside.

sueelleker · 04/02/2020 09:10

We had to have indoor shoes at my grammar school in the 60s/70s. They even specified what make and style!

norealshepherds · 04/02/2020 09:16

The only way to have weetabix is with sugar and cold milk

adviceneededon · 04/02/2020 09:29

@Frenchw1fe I have the same argument with school every year, and I never back down. Plimsoles are like slippers and not at all good for feet. In the workplace we do not change into indoor shoes. I buy Clarke's shoes every year, fitted correctly and there is no way they are changing once in school.

coconuttelegraph · 04/02/2020 09:32

Indoor shoes at my school too, I've never really thought about it but I guess it was to stop the mud from the field being spread around the school.

Ketchup with pizza isn't unusual is it? I don't often have a pizza but my dc dip theirs in ketchup. I don't know where that comes from but must be pretty mainstream or they wouldn't know about it

Clevs · 04/02/2020 13:53

@coconuttelegraph

I've never seen anyone have ketchup on pizza but I do have a blob of mayo on the side to dip my crusts in. I think that stems from having a pot of garlic dip with a takeaway pizza.

Lweji · 04/02/2020 15:11

At my DS's school they were supposed to keep wellies there to wear outside when it rained. It makes more sense. Plimsolls were for the gym, IIRC.

Geoffreythecat · 04/02/2020 15:17

I had outdoor and indoor shoes at school too. Mind you we had to wear school uniform pants, so having two pairs of shoes was the least of my worries....

herbsmokedchicken · 04/02/2020 20:51

My ex always has ketchup with pizza. He has ketchup with pretty much everything to be fair, including roast dinners.

userxx · 04/02/2020 21:37

@herbsmokedchicken Isn't ketchup with pizza normal? I smother mine.

TheMotherofAllDilemmas · 04/02/2020 21:54

It is just like putting gravy on fish, but nobody dies.

Nat6999 · 04/02/2020 22:13

Talking about taking pets caravanning, when I was married we had a caravan, my then husband would drive down on a friday lunchtime to set up & I would pick ds up from school with his hamster in his travel cage, we had a cage at the caravan for him, never crossed my mind to put him 2 days food in his cage & leave him at home. Ds used to take him to visit friends on the site in his strawberry house.

NCTDN · 04/02/2020 22:38

I too always thought that whisky was normal for Father Christmas.
