Things you assumed were normal

DH bought some weetabix to have for breakfast a few days ago and I was amazed to see him preparing it by just pouring cold milk on and then eating it like that! I can't eat weetabix now but when I was little my mum would pour the milk on, then microwave it, then mash the biscuits in to create something similar to porridge. I assumed at the time that this was the only way to eat weetabix but my husband was appalled at the very idea and after a quick google it does seem like I'm very much in the minority. So it got me thinking, what are some things that you thought were normal, but then you realised that you/your family were the only one(s) doing it like that?

@dawlish , have you tried the ginger Phili lemon curd combo. ?

iklboo · 02/02/2020 19:17

Beef dripping (after it's had the beef cooked in it and set) spread on cheap thick white bread or the same bread toasted with a ton of salt. Blush

Ayomi · 02/02/2020 19:21

Have just spent a good 10 mins here sending shivers down my spine! Grin.
Small amount of goosebumps to match. I had no idea!!

Elouera · 02/02/2020 19:29

I too have always been able to do the shivers/goosebump thing. Just thought I was odd!

BumbleBeeFlower · 02/02/2020 20:04

@ladybee28 I do ketchup on my pizza as well!

Dawlish · 02/02/2020 20:14

@Smelly50, yes, just like a mini cheesecake, but no washing up! I'm going to try with a digestive biscuit later cos they are bigger Grin

lamalama · 02/02/2020 20:23

@CigarsofthePharoahs my gran used to make jelly fluff when I was little and I've made it a couple of times but not for a long time. Really nice.

BedStuy · 02/02/2020 20:24

My mum makes a pudding called jelly fluff.
You make a jelly and wait until it's almost set. Then you whip up a can of evaporated milk until fluffy. Then you fold in the slightly runny jelly. Leave to set.
It's lovely. I've never met anyone else who has anything like it.

We made that in Home Economics once (in England)! It's like cheats' mousse.

GlomOfNit · 02/02/2020 20:35

Ecci, perhaps your DH is related to my DH, because I discovered, on barging into the bathroom once when he was in there, that he also stands up to wipe his arse! And not with a little folded wodge of paper, oh no. With a long streamer of paper. WTAF? [sick] My eyes, my eyes. I cannot ever unsee it (and I'm now very careful not to barge into the loo if I think he might be on it). I asked him incredulously 'what are you DOING? Do you always do it like that?' and he was justifiably narked but apparently this has always been the way. Dragged up, I'm telling you. Grin

My grandma was convinced that eating in public was Common. (She didn't have a grand upbringing herself but by adulthood had definitely bettered herself and probably wanted to maintain the distance.) She wouldn't ever let me eat an ice lolly on the way home from the village shop. Instead, the shopkeeper had to wrap up my Lemonade Sparkle in newspaper and we'd walk the ten minutes back to her house. It was always a bit too soft by then. Sad

She also sliced Mars Bars into little 1cm slices and apparently did this with my mum too (we blame rationing). If I ever eat one, I prefer to do it like that myself now.

Butter on digestive biscuits
Treacle drizzled over Yorkshire pudding was our dessert of choice
OMG the memories
My ma gave me utterly disgusting butter on digestives. Why would anyone ruin a biscuit like that?
But I do love a sweet Yorkshire pudding. So make your Yorkshire as usual, then add double cream, or thick yogurt, or ice cream or cook with fruits or add jam.
I also love it with gravy and a roast.

Ok my ma made toast under the grill (remember them?) And only toasted one side.
I didnt even know this wasnt normal til I was 18, after a party I made my toast and everyone cringed at one sided toast. Sheesh. Embarrassed is not the word.

GlomOfNit · 02/02/2020 20:46

Oh, I know something I do that people think is odd. I can't have a bowl of tinned tomato soup without crumbling up chunks of cheese in it. They sink to the bottom and are all stringy on the spoon. Grin Cheese in ALL soup is pretty essential, tbh.

Graphista · 02/02/2020 20:49

Re mini "no cook" cheesecakes - also works with digestives or hob nobs, too with cream cheese and a dollop of jam or lemon curd.

Mini "no cook" tarts - biscuit of choice, topped with jam then a squirt of whipped cream from a can - and no I don't want to know the calories!

I always sneeze when I'm full and I assumed Evrryone did but they don't!?

Itsashame · 02/02/2020 20:59

mintymabel it’s a legend www.snopes.com/fact-check/grandmas-cooking-secret/

Gluetap · 02/02/2020 21:20

@Elouera, my grandmother made that but called it mock crab.

I’ve always liked cold roast potatoes with salad cream, rich tea biscuits sandwiched together with butter and mince on toast with a poached egg or grated cheese on top (not all at the same time!).

Elouera · 02/02/2020 21:33

@mytypeonpaper- my husband also sneezes if he has eaten too much, so does his mother! I've never known anyone else that does it till now.

NCTDN · 02/02/2020 21:37

@CigarsofthePharoahs I love that jelly!

When I was liltle I used to have ready break (not runny) but then would stir a handful of cornflakes or rice krispies into it- crunchy and yummy!

BertieBotts · 02/02/2020 22:15

Sneezing is weird. DS2 sneezes when he looks into a bright light. I had heard of this, but never met anyone who does it.

NCTDN · 02/02/2020 22:33

@BertieBotts I sneeze in bright light.

FlamingoAndJohn · 02/02/2020 22:35

I sneeze at a bright light.
I read once that it was a recessive genetic thing. People who sneeze at a bright light don’t make very good hunters.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 02/02/2020 22:39

If I have a sneeze that won't sneeze, I always look at a light or the sun. It's a common thing to suggest or say in my world (friends, family, colleagues)

FlamingoAndJohn · 02/02/2020 22:40

My mum makes a pudding called jelly fluff.

My mum used to collect 1920/30/40/50 ephemera. One thing she had was a set of cards that came with packets of jelly with recipes on. She had them framed in the kitchen. One recipe was jelly fluff.

WeSavedSallySally · 02/02/2020 22:41

Keeping shoe's on going into a house.

Giving them a good wipe first, and if it's been a raining or muddy, take shoes off.
Otherwise, keep ingredients shoes on. Growing up all friends and family also had shoes on. Large expensive houses, small tiny flats... Always shoes on unless the above.

It was such a shock to suddenly have this almost manic shoes off sprouting around me. It's talented me a long time to get used to it.

WeSavedSallySally · 02/02/2020 22:42

Glom my mum did the cut chocolate bars into teeny pieces too.

Excuse spell check above

sunshineskymoon · 02/02/2020 22:45

Hot Ribena and hot lemonade when not feeling well

Salted tomatoes eaten like an apple

Yorkshire puddings with chilli con carne

Bovril as a drink or on buttered toast or crumpets.

These are all things I've done which some people have mentioned are maybe not the norm!

This thread is making me hungry! I've always just had sliced cheese on toast under the grill but I really want to grate it with an egg and some seasonings now. That might be my lunch tomorrow!
