Things you assumed were normal

DH bought some weetabix to have for breakfast a few days ago and I was amazed to see him preparing it by just pouring cold milk on and then eating it like that! I can't eat weetabix now but when I was little my mum would pour the milk on, then microwave it, then mash the biscuits in to create something similar to porridge. I assumed at the time that this was the only way to eat weetabix but my husband was appalled at the very idea and after a quick google it does seem like I'm very much in the minority. So it got me thinking, what are some things that you thought were normal, but then you realised that you/your family were the only one(s) doing it like that?

Don't know about Weetabix, but plain digestives definitely taste best with a thick coating of butter.

Try them with Nutella and forgive me for telling you about it. They are dangerously addictive.

I only discovered last year that Cremola foam is a Scottish thing

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 01/02/2020 20:09

Buttered weetabix
Bread and butter dunked in tinned tomatoes
Bread and butter soldiers dunked in strawberry yoghurt

Butter played a large part in our childhood diet Grin

I walked in on my boyfriend in the bathroom wiping his bum after a number 2, and he was standing up to wipe his arse!

I've heard of people doing this - but I can't understand how! What you stand up your bum cheeks close so how do you even wipe properly?

Ohffs66 · 01/02/2020 20:13

I think I was about 22 when I discovered that cauliflower and cabbage were 2 separate veg. We always had them mushed together like a paste with Sunday dinner so I always thought 'cauli and cabbage" was just one thing.

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 01/02/2020 20:14

Oh and mashed banana sandwich as an after school snack.

dementedma · 01/02/2020 20:20

importantwater we had one leg of a pair of tights as our stockings too. Long, knobbly, stretchy serpents of excitement, crackling on the end of the bed!

Mushed banana sandwiches are the dogs bollocks. Me and dd love a good banana sandwich. MIL made me one once and instead of pushing the banana she sliced it. I nearly sliced her, what did she think she was playing at 😂

I have just put salt on hot buttered crumpets - so whoever suggested that please marry me. It was amazing.

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 01/02/2020 20:32

Cold toast is one of the treats of a hotel breakfast. Brown toast, nicely cold, with butter and marmalade. Perfect.

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 01/02/2020 20:32

@Theonewiththecat sliced banana is all wrong, it's so weird texturally having little round slightly slimy bits of banana in the buttered bread. Mashed banana however is texturally lush.

Natsku · 01/02/2020 20:37

Loved mashed banana sandwiches

Mamabear144 · 01/02/2020 20:40

I love hot weetabix all mashed up with sugar but dm thinks I'm disgusting when I do it, she has hers cold, I also eat it cold sometimes when I'm in the mood though

Weenurse · 01/02/2020 20:40

Sliced banana sandwiches here.
Cold milk on wheetbix.
Bread slice fried in the juices of the roast- that was a treat.

thesunhasgothishatontoday · 01/02/2020 20:49

Toasted sandwich with banana and chocolate buttons. You can thank me later

ladybird69 · 01/02/2020 20:51

Weetabix warm milk and sliced bananas ‘it’s the only way

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 01/02/2020 21:02

Weenurse, my grandad used to save the bacon fat for frying bread. Oh my god so so so good.

gingerninja99 · 01/02/2020 21:07

Things from my childhood
Weetabix warm with milk & sugar although I can't stand the stuff now! Warm tinned rice pudding with jam mixed in. Sugar sandwiches, digestive biscuits with either butter or jam.
When we had a cold my dad would make us hot orange squash before bed with a dose of medicine.
Coke floats - yummy with basically any fizzy drink Grin
Porridge was made really stodgy then loads of milk added so it would float then sugar on top for me but my mum would have salt.
Yorkshire puddings with anything, I'm not fussed, sweet or savoury!

I don't use salt in cooking as I can't stand it

gingerninja99 · 01/02/2020 21:08

Oh and my nana made all the grandkids hard boiled eggs mashed up in a cup with butter! I do this now whenever any of us are poorly

clareken260 · 01/02/2020 21:13

Spied, we used to have buttered digestives, with a slice of cheese, and some sliced apple, as dessert sometimes. Still occasionally have it now, but sometimes as the meal.

Growingboys · 01/02/2020 21:18

Just to lower the tone, DH and I fart in front of each other. Only recently this subject came up at work, and everyone was HORRIFIED that we did this in front of each other. They all said their other half had never heard them fart.

This still amazes me.

eatchicken1 · 01/02/2020 21:18

I love my toast cold and then buttered. I stand my toast up like wigwams so that it isnt soggy - just really crispy. x

Tarararara · 01/02/2020 21:29

Butter and peanut butter on toast (or crackers). Texture is horrible without the butter.

MollySilkNose · 01/02/2020 21:44

My mum got a microwave when they first came out. She always kept a mug of water in it for if it was accidentally turned on. She believed that if there wasn't anything inside then the microwave beams would bounce back up, causing the whole thing to set on fire. When I went to uni I was horrified that no one had a mug of water in their microwave... we were all in mortal danger! Once my boyfriend cooked something in the microwave, took the food out, closed the microwave door and the microwave kept running with nothing inside. I yelled at him to turn it off, while driving for cover. He dumped me quite soon after that 🤷‍♀️

SHAR0N · 01/02/2020 21:48

Putting a mug of water in the microwave was recommended by the manufacturers in their instruction book.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 01/02/2020 21:52

Mr Morel drank his tea out of a saucer - Sons and Lovers - he was a miner but can't remember where it was set.

I have always eaten the whole apple, core included. Also the shell and tails of prawns (just cut the head and legs off).

And we had white bread sugar sandwiches when we were ill. With Lucozade ...
