Things you assumed were normal

DH bought some weetabix to have for breakfast a few days ago and I was amazed to see him preparing it by just pouring cold milk on and then eating it like that! I can't eat weetabix now but when I was little my mum would pour the milk on, then microwave it, then mash the biscuits in to create something similar to porridge. I assumed at the time that this was the only way to eat weetabix but my husband was appalled at the very idea and after a quick google it does seem like I'm very much in the minority. So it got me thinking, what are some things that you thought were normal, but then you realised that you/your family were the only one(s) doing it like that?

Remembered another, on bread day (we had bread delivered three times a week!) my mum used to cut off the crust, butter it and give it to us as a major treat :) pretty clever way to get rid of it I reckon

JamesBlonde1 · 31/01/2020 19:59

Fruity - eating the full apple core. Haha, that's hilarious Grin

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 31/01/2020 20:00

My parents (Irish) also used to do a thing when they wanted to cool a mug of hot tea down a bit. They’d get another mug and pour the tea into it, then back again, repeat several times. And when they’d finished the tea was at the exact right temperature for drinking.

How did they pour it without it all running down the outside of the first mug? I can never pour from a cup without that happening!

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 31/01/2020 20:02

I used to think it was completely normal to keep butter in a dish in the microwave with the door closed as my mum always used to do it. It made perfect sense to me, didn't get too cold and hard in the fridge, kept the flies off... turns out that was weird.

Is it the room temperature bit that you think is weird (it's not, it should be room temp!); or the microwave part? (surely just tidy!)

BritneyPeedOnALadybug · 31/01/2020 20:07

@herbsmokedchicken
I can sort of do it but not enough for goosebumps to appear!

It's like the shiver builds up in my neck and then I push it down through my body which goes cold for a couple of seconds and then the goosebumps appear Confused I'm going to research it because it must have a name if it's something many or some people can't do.

Microwaves! DH reckons it's normal to store leftover food in the microwave. As in, overnight Confused When I ask him why he doesn't use the fridge, you know, to keep it at a food safe temperature he looks at me like Hmm and says the microwave keeps it warm. Yes, microwaves are apparently a time capsule to keep food in the exact state it was plated up in.

Went to MIL's house and she's forever serving us grotty room temperature snacks out of the microwave Envy < not envy

CinderEmma · 31/01/2020 20:12

Porridge with a little sugar in it and a knob of butter on the top

Mummyeyes · 31/01/2020 20:12

@Gatehouse77 you are my sister right? That's all stuff from my childhood, especially the Christmas tree on Christmas Eve.

Good god, what kind of heathen am I? I do this as well. Not because I think it will keep food warm but because... I don’t know why because, just that that’s what I’ve ever known. (Yes, I do store food in the fridge but leftovers... in the microwave they go) Blush

BarbaraManatee · 31/01/2020 20:19

Cheese strings. I thought they were totally normal & everyone knew how to eat them... Until I got some for my DC & watched as DH carefully sliced little circles & arranged them on his bread. Hmm

meredithgrey1 · 31/01/2020 20:25

If I bake a cake I'll store it in the microwave - keeps it out of the way and stops any flies getting it. I wouldn't store anything in there that should be in the fridge though!

At what point did you explain? Or does he still slice them?

MikeAlphaMike · 31/01/2020 20:40

Toast was bread grilled on one side until we got a popup toaster.

Toast or a slice of bread has jam or butter. I've been asked if this is because I am counting calories.

vincettenoir · 31/01/2020 20:42

Avocado for dessert.

MikeAlphaMike · 31/01/2020 20:42

The crust was a treat but the heel needed to be toasted. On one side.

justkeeprunning5 · 31/01/2020 20:44

@meredithgrey1 I had no idea anyone ate them cold... I’ve always had them hot!

JamieFrasersSassenach · 31/01/2020 21:12

@RiftGibbon I can make my ears rumble!!! It has never crossed my mind that some people may not be able to......

Historydweeb · 31/01/2020 21:21

@angorarabbit OMG, this is my local cafe!
Not been there for years but still iconic

Maxineputyourredshoeson · 31/01/2020 21:31

@RiftGibbon I can make my ears rumble too, I’m surprised not everyone can do it! Just asked DH and it would appear he can’t and he didn’t know what the hell I was on about Grin

duckme · 31/01/2020 21:34

@MilkTrayLimeBarrel
I love cod liver oil and malt! We used to have it when we were little too! I also used to enjoy the odd cube of raw jelly.
And raw sausage. I suspect this a Black Country thing though as a pair of elderly Black Country twins were on This Morning a few months back talking about this.
I used to love butter and sugar sandwiches too. My recent diagnosis of IBS is not so much of a mystery now come to think of it!

angorarabbit · 31/01/2020 21:40

Browns? does it still exist?! I'm going back to teenage summers in Pembroke in the 70s!!

rededucator · 31/01/2020 21:41

Gurlwiththecurl when you say everything changed do you mean your parents were surprised with your findings and then you all bathed more regularly? Did they feel embarrassed or that they were trying to keep up with the Jones's. It's a very interesting tale x

YogaLite · 31/01/2020 21:42

Apple core eater too 😀 never met anyone who does the same, nice to know I am not alone (and not afraid of being poisoned).

I don't like milk and usually have tea with a slice of lemon. If no lemon available, I put in a splash of orange juice (or any available juice).

Also like cold desert with hot topping or the other way round.

Gatehouse77 · 31/01/2020 21:46

@Mummyeyes

Tell me more about the jam omelettes!!

Looking back, it makes me heave at the thought 🤢

BedStuy · 31/01/2020 22:09

This thread reminds me that me and my brother went through a phase of microwaving cheese sandwiches to melt the cheese. bit like on Alan Partridge: "that's not toast, that's hot floppy bread!"

I'm fairly sure in our house we ate salad (lettuce, tomato and cucumber) with our fingers instead of a knife and fork. Christ only knows who I did this in front of as an adult before I cottoned on. I think the logic was it's like eating carrot sticks or cucumber sticks.
