  4. Is it a total fabrication to justify going out for tea?

lmfao

wonderful thread

I loved the book in childhood, but have avoided getting it for dses principally because of rhe picture in which Daddy, freshly home from Work (and later, he again is the one who takes them Out Into The Exciting World), sits resplendent on his throne in his armchair and Sophie and Mummy stand by and explain the situation for him to sort out. In Goodbye Mog, too (which we have and love), it is Mrs Thomas who clears up the 'rumpus' and goes to the shops. (Rumpus is rather tiger-coloured, is he not? ) I do like Judith Kerr very much, though.

struwellpeter · 27/08/2008 23:42

But I love the idea of Daddy sorting it all out. Perhaps I've had too many years of having to sort things out myself before Daddy makes an appearance too late!

That marthamoo was nice. And funny. And extremely beautiful too, iirc. What happened to her, I wonder?

Heifer · 28/08/2008 17:37

I am certainly more tetchy than techy!

And I'm not actually, I have no idea why you would jump to that conclusion, I wish you would just leave me alone.....

harpsichordcarrier · 30/08/2008 08:50

soren, don't you remember we all hated her and had a big party when she left?
you know, with the bunting?

WilfSell · 30/08/2008 09:16

ACtually I think it was my tiger, Dave. We keep him under the trampoline to set on rotty owners. He is ready and waiting to kebab Fimbo's attackers if the police don't get em first.

He had just had a bit of therapy in those days and felt like he needed to make his own way in the world. He left home for a while and we missed him. He has always had food issues.

stroppyknickers · 30/08/2008 09:20

omg - i thought exactly the same last week. Mummy is an alkie who ate all the food (bulimic alkie?), didn't pay the water bill, and relies on daddy to sort it out. Poor child fabricates cover up stories for mummy. Or am i projecting...

accordiongirl · 15/11/2008 00:22

DH reads this as a rape parable...

Sycamoretree · 02/05/2009 17:28

Sorry, just had to resurrect this thread in light of taking DD to see the stage version yesterday.

I just couldn't get all these hilarious posts out of my head as the tiger bowed most graciously to Sophie and her mummy. All I could think of was Terry Thomas and the idea that mummy was a raging alcoholic who was trying to cover up her bit on the side coming over for an afternoon quickie by convincing her poor deluded daughter that he is, in fact, a tiger.

Wheelybug · 02/05/2009 17:33

LOL. We saw this today Sycamore (you must live near me !) - and I too had this thread in my head !

Sycamoretree · 02/05/2009 17:43

The bloody Tiger was a bit realistic wasn't he? DD had my hand over her eyes for the first 5 mins his was on stage LOL!

She loved Sophie, but I just kept thinking what a funny job the casting director must have had finding an uber tall mummy and daddy adult actor and a teenie tiny sophie adult actor.

Set and costumes were great though. Did you notice gold old Flo Benjamin was reading it for story time on cbeebies last night?

Wheelybug · 02/05/2009 17:55

Yes - the tiger was realistic. My dd had decided she was going to be scared of the tiger before we even got there. She got over it though thankfully !

Judith Kerr was in the audience at our performance so she came on at the end which I think confused most of the kids in the audience.

IwoulddoDrWho · 02/05/2009 18:10

What?? There's a stage version. Why did no-one tell me?

Poledra · 02/05/2009 18:15

Does anyone else think Floella Benjamin looks just the same as she did on Playaway when we (DH and I) wuz young? D'you think she has a picture in her attic......?

Wheelybug · 02/05/2009 18:19

Poledra - I thought exactly that ! Maybe we've jsut aged with her

Sycamoretree · 02/05/2009 18:30

Yes IWOULD, I think it's touring. Was just on in Wimbledon this weekend (tomorrow and Monday too I think).

flamingobingo · 19/05/2009 08:16

at those women who won't read TTWCTT to their children because the Mummy is from the 50s and, therefore, behaves like a 50s housewife! Do you not read any classics to them either? How daft!

FlossieT · 13/06/2009 02:38

Somebody really ought to post a link to this thread in the comments to this post:

Then Daddy Came Home

FlossieT · 13/06/2009 02:38

Either that or accuse Christopher Tayler of plagiarism....

RhubarbIsEvil · 23/05/2019 14:16

I am resurrecting this thread in tribute to the wonderful Judith Kerr who has died at the age of 95.
