Or is my neighbour about my laundry...?

Name changed in case she's on mumsnet

Don't know NDN well. We are quiet and (I thought!) inoffensive so no issues for the last 6 months we've lived here. There's a low fence between our gardens.

Given that I live in the west of scotland, it's a rare opportunity to hang clothes out on the line to dry, which DH and I have been doing the past few days.

Today NDN appeared at the door and asked me to "be more careful" with my laundry. I initially thought something had blown into her garden and apologised. She said no, that us hanging out "personal items" was embarrassing for her and she didn't want her young sons (who are late primary age I think) seeing things like that. After clarifying she meant bras and knickers I admit I snorted with laughter a bit and said "but don't they see YOUR pants drying indoors!?" to which she said that I clearly didn't want to help and that she'd ask her DH to come over later to speak to my DH once he's in from work!

I have not brought my laundry in and have just done another load. She's glaring from her conservatory. AIBU to ignore her? Or should I bring my offensive undies in off the line?

Have they moved from the East of Scotland?

I am in the east of Scotland and my knickers are on the line proudly blowing in the breeze!

RoseDog · 26/05/2017 19:02

I also have a late primary school aged son and currently a loads of his friends hanging about my garden, none of them seem alarmed by my laundry!

AmethystRaven · 26/05/2017 19:03

This has really cheered me up after a tough day with a small child who has turned into Gollum on speed Grin

milliemolliemou · 26/05/2017 19:08

Amazed by PPs who won't put stuff out on a line and just waste energy and money on tumble dryers. Do they not know of the great smell of sun-dried laundry when you can and the extra bonus of saving the planet? Mine's on a line between roses, lavender and apple trees. I do take it in ASAP but what's not to like?

fannydaggerz · 26/05/2017 19:11

She's nuts.

Hang your pants out with pride.

Westray · 26/05/2017 19:11

I line dry all year round.
No tumble dryer.
Washing dries even with a thick layer of snow on the ground if its sunny.
I am in Scotland.

This is a proper Friday night, several glasses of wine thread. Who needs TV with this beauty to follow.

you have a responsibility to us all to hang out your next lot soon - making sure it is only respectable wool skirts and high-necked blouses - but be wearing pants and bra only while you peg it out on the line. Smile over at her in the conservatory, to show you expect her to be pleased with you about the respectable nature of what you are hanging out.

QueenieGoldstein · 26/05/2017 19:17

Ah this thread reminds me of my ex neighbour (and her obsession with mouthing the word "unmentionables"), she was bonkers but in a truly wonderful way.

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 26/05/2017 19:18

millie,

"Mine's on a line between roses, lavender and apple trees."

Your garden sounds lovely

Anyone else imagining Mr Neighbour now hanging upside down, pegged to OP's line, after heroic, towel-clad DH didn't take kindly to discussion about private laundry?!

CiliatedEpithelium · 26/05/2017 19:18

When I first moved here my neighbours had a monster row one weekend and on the Monday morning, the wife apologised and said it was because she had hung her underwear on the line and my then DP could see them. My then DP wasn't particularly interested in my underwear let alone hers (one of the many reasons he is an Ex DP) but this is definitely a thing. Some Reg Grundies should not be seen but as long as the dog hasn't chewed the gusset out or they are an obvious LoveHoney purchase there should be no problem surely?

laundryninja · 26/05/2017 19:20

Harsh, Euphemia - I am in fact a displaced Easterling! I forgot to mention DH is a Dubliner. A large, bearded, Irish wrestler. Please allow this to give you some context.

THE DH CAME ROUND.

Unfortunately, I was out the back taking in the dry stuff and pegging up the cycling gear (the joy of it not sunset not being until10pm, I fear not re getting darked on)

I suspect that NDN had seen me go out back and ushered her DH out the front

I caught the end of it. NDN DH was very sheepish and had apparently come over to have words about me "upsetting his wife". My DH let him witter himself into a corner, then went on a rant encompassing feminism, pants and "eejitery". He then every so quietly leaned in close and said "and now you'll leave" then turned him round and gently walked the man down the steps.

We're in the corner of the garden having some wine next to the laundry. They're glaring from the conservatory.

I love a good neighbour/laundry thread!

Had a lovely chat with my NDN while hanging out my washing earlier, as she was admiring DS' tiny babygros.
They have 2 DSs 14 & 7ish and have never felt the need to comment on my pants of enormous bras.

Eagerly awaiting update regarding DH's mankini clad convo with NDN DH and kitten photo, obvs.

NorthernLurker · 26/05/2017 19:23

You husband is a legend!

BalloonDinosaur · 26/05/2017 19:23

Argh, X post OP!

Spunds like excellent work by your DH!

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 26/05/2017 19:23

Rose,

Anti,

My late DGM referred to her "modesty foundation garment".
Would that be along similar lines, do you suppose?

BringMeTea · 26/05/2017 19:23

Wow! Excellent update OP.

GrouchyKiwi · 26/05/2017 19:23

Amazing update, OP. Enjoy your wine. Grin

laundryninja · 26/05/2017 19:25

I think the kitten can sense the tension, she's hiding under the bed.

While this is rather amusing, we do have to live next to them and now I'm a bit worried Sad - this seemed like a much nicer area than where we came from...

On the plus side the ones on the other side have got the paddling pool out and their adorable children are splashing around, which is nice.

blueskyinmarch · 26/05/2017 19:27

That is hilarious. Your DH is a legend.

HildaOg · 26/05/2017 19:27

Haha... Your dh dealt with that perfectly.

BellaMoon · 26/05/2017 19:28

@laundryninja OMFG! please tell me where you live so that i can come round and forcibly remove your NDNs from Scotland... i will not have these people tarnish our reputation for being fun, accepting, liberal and decent human beings!
