Odd things - do you remember your mum doing these in the 60s?

Putting a drop of water on a tin can before opening it, because if an air bubble came up through the water, the can might be blown? (I think that was the reason?)

The only bottle of olive oil in the house was absolutely TINY, and labelled "Olive Oil. BP". I think it cost a fortune, and was kept in the first aid cupboard. For earaches, perhaps?

Can you remember when homes started to have telephones?
My aunt who had 'married well's had a black Bakelite one which was on a shared party line with a neighbour.
When we got ours it was put in the hall - so cold, and it was only used for emergencies. My gran used to cover hers with a tea towel 'to save it'.
Then later we had a wall phone in the kitchen. With none if them were we allowed to use the phone to chat to anyone. Red phone boxes were for that.

Must look up the recipe for the toffee..I'm sure it's a simple one like just sugar and butter boiled..or not...anyone know?

We had a pressure cooker that made terrifying noises on the Aga but created the most fabulous dumplings. My mum still wears her 1960's style headscarves no matter how much we've tried to modernise her. "Well, it's good enough for the Queen," is her mantra.

Ninja yes, I use a pressure cooker. Mine was given to me by my lovely grandmother for my 21st birthday, so I've had it for almost 32 years and it's still going strong. I made a delicious, tender stew in it last week - took an hour from start to finish.

I was born in the 60s, but my parents are forrin, so olive oil and fresh orange juice were normal things to have in the kitchen. I was thoroughly bemused when the nurse gave us bottles of orange concentrate for my baby brother, and when I came across those little flat bottles of Olive Oil BP at Boots!

We had Dettol baths, wall-mounted kitchen scales and a wall-mounted tin opener, so they must have absorbed some of the local culture Wink

But I grew up in the 80s and we had dettol in the bath, mum wore a head scarf, a saucer of water in front of the electric fire; and I do save dripping - it's an excellent substitute for butter for toast and marmite (dairy allergy)!

But mum grew up in the 60s. As an Italian in the U.K., she remembers her mum having to buy olive oil from Boots (and the shop assistant asking how she was getting through so much of it and never accepting you could cook with it) and garlic ordered in from a specific market stall that did ALL foreign foods!

We had a twin tub, too.

My grandma (coal tar soap) had a pressure cooker. I have an Instant Pot and feel safer. I also try to avoid cooking the vegetables to buggery like she did.

When my mum discovered spaghetti in the 80s she cooked it as a potato alternative - boiled, drained and a pile on the side of the plate. No sauce. Either that or ravioli in tomato sauce from a tin. For years I thought I didn't like ravioli. Ditto quiche having been scared by school cheese flan.

Power my Mum used to make faggots with Pigs Fry. They were delicious.

She also had a pressure cooker which was huge. Mum was very short so had to stand on a step when she was using it.

Yes to rubbing your eyelid with a wedding ring if you thought you had a stye.

Mum and Dad used to order a whole lamb, jointed up, for the chest freezer.

We used to sit watching Big Top Wrestling eating chitterlings with vinegar and pepper on and bread and butter Smile.

We still have kaolin and morphine for upset stomachs. It often causes a big licquorice burp that seems to help.

I still rub soap in collars, use Astonish but if I see a Fairy bar will get one.
Long spaghetti and parmesan dried and grated in a shaker.

I was born in 72 and I remember so many of these!
Twin tub with mangle
Small bottles of olive oil from chemists
Chip pan with solidified fat to be re used (god I miss my dad's home made chips!)
Kaolin and morphine for sickness - brown glass bottle, chalky mixture?
Fairy liquid as emergency shampoo
Coal tar soap
Plant holders made from 🐚 shells
Tight perms
Once women got over 40 they seemed to start dressing like pensioners - head scarves, paisley dresses, hats, brooches, housecoats, aprons....
My mother (71) has never in her life worn jeans

PowerPantsRule, I can remember being driven into the nearest town to shop at the Pricerite there, which I think was probably the first supermarket!

And hazelnut Ski yoghurt, and those little pots of strawberry mousse.

Being treated to a Wimpy burger when we went into town, accompanied by a Coke float - a glass of coke with a dollop of ice cream slowly dissolving in it. It was lovely!

We had the sack of spuds in the garage, my mum once went in the dark to fetch some and mistakenly picked up a toad.
yy tiny olive oil (was BP British Pharmaceuticals?), and wall mounted opener.
We also had a strange gizmo to chop up onions; you put the onion under a sort of inverted cup with blades in it and pounded the handle to chop the onion.

Orange juice that you diluted, it came in a can. The original 'made from concentrate'

My parents used to make coffee in a percolator. They would make a pot of coffee after dinner, then save the unused and put it in the fridge, and just heat it up cup by cup in a pan, as wanted. I think that was quite unusual though. I think most people drank instant, before the days of cafetières. Coffee was bought as beans, but you could get it ground up in the shop, and it would be replaced in the bag and the top twisted to close it before being given back to you.

A bit later in the early 70's it was common to buy an entire animal eg pig and have it in your chest freezer I recall every single part was in there. You could have anything you wanted for tea provided it was pork.

Lamb too.

Freezer centres.

Egg slicer gizmos.

My dad's car's indicators came out of the pillar separating the doors and then went back in again, not the flashing lights we have now.
And he used to put his hand straight out of the window to signal turning right. To signal turning left I think the same hand went out but you rotated it in a circular motion

I used to go with my mum to "the clinic". We got given gerber orange concentrate. Also we had a bread man deliver to our house. And we watched the wrestling every Saturday with our next door neighbours. AND I used to walk to school on my own from the age of 5!
