What naice things do you make sure are visible to visitors

Most of the time I have detol hand soap in my bathrooms but if I know someone is visiting my home I get out the posh L'Occitane matching soap and moisturiser stuff I recieved for Christmas a few years back. Surely people notice it's always the same amount of fullness each time they visit? Plus who has enough time to moisturise their hands every time they wash them with a toddler in the house. Jesus if Im more than 15 seconds having a wee he'll be banging the door down wanting to come in or he will have jammed quavers in the xbox. There's no time for the luxury of hand moistorusing. Plus it's a bugger keeping a grip on his squirmy hands St the best of times let alone adding lubrication into the mix.

When my guests leave, back it goes under the sink so as not to waste it.

I also like the fruit bowl to be bursting with beautiful fruit. We always have bananas and satsumas but for some reason a pineapple just makes my mundane life feel that little bit more exotic. "Ooh look at wiggles84 she must peel her pineapple fresh each morning for her delightful childs breakfast". No a quick bit of toast and a banana and we're off to start our days. No one's got time for that surely?

None of us even like pineapple Shock

I know, I know I shouldn't care what people think but what little things do you project to the world so as to not to appear the frazzled dog tired slutten you are?

Nothing. Take me as you find me.

AnnieOnnieMouse · 06/10/2016 19:29

You do realise that stunt pineapple will now go down in MN lore alongside penis beaker and naice ham, don't you?
Only thing I try to ensure is fully visible to visitors is the carpet - a quick PUPA and a vac round. Nowt posh here!

Eolian · 06/10/2016 19:39

Nothing in terms of 'display'. I tend to focus on taking them to lovely places and pushing the boat out on the food front. I'd rather spend effort and money on things we can all enjoy together rather than display items to make my life appear more luxurious tbh. Except now I'm going to have to have a stunt pineapple Grin.

MsUnderstanding · 06/10/2016 19:44

You watch, there'll be a new section in Dunelm by the end of next week for 'stage' cleaning items

Wilkos are ahead of the game......

My daughter (7) belongs of this thread. She requested a coconut for the fruit bowl, for show.

Gowgirl · 06/10/2016 19:53

Ok I'm going to get a pot brush tomorrow....

I like to display my naked arse to visitors, just to make sure the fuckers don't come back and because sometimes I cba to get dressed. On the downside, I think the postman is in love with my arse me.

NoTractorsAtTheTable · 06/10/2016 20:02

I am seriously craving a stunt pineapple now, and a stunt washing area.

I whack the telly off and put Radio 3 on, quietly in the background - "Oh that, yes, it's on most of the time..." A few artfully draped throws over the sofa, and you'd think I had been spending my time reading and contemplating life.

(The effect is utterly ruined by child shouting "muuummmy, it's time for Coach Trip" Blush)

datingbarb · 06/10/2016 20:04

My sister has everything for show even though she doesn't really like visitors in her house Confused not many make it past the kitchen

Her husband stupidly used the diamanté trim next towel hanging next to the bathroom sink to dry his hands on.... He certainly won't ever make that mistake again as they are "only for show"

She even brought a new kettle and for months kept her old one in the kitchen cupboard and would bring it out to boil every time she wanted a cuppa

Cellardoor23 · 06/10/2016 20:04

A clean house. That's all I care about if someone comes to visit. As long as it's clean and clutter free I'm happy.

GinAndOnIt · 06/10/2016 20:07

Oh, that Wilko link is almost like porn.

SpeckledyBanana · 06/10/2016 20:10

I want a Housekeeper's box now Envy

MaQueen · 06/10/2016 20:11

Am I the only one who has summer/winter cushions and throws, and summer/winter bedding?

Itsallabitcrazyhere · 06/10/2016 20:12

Just me who does the whole bale of fresh matching towels, bowl of mini shampoo, shower gels and deodorant and a card saying 'just in case you forgot anything' along with our wifi code for overnight guests? Blush

Mistoffelees · 06/10/2016 20:13

I love the idea of the stunt pineapple and staged washing up area! I will declutter and light a couple of scented candles, that's about my limit but I do notice when people have nice things, I don't judge if they have big standard stuff either though.

Mistoffelees · 06/10/2016 20:14

Bog standard*

gettingtherequickly · 06/10/2016 20:17

We always have plenty of quality scented candles, mainly to mask the smell of dogs, then I pray that en dogs will be such a distraction that no-one notices the random washing / pots / papers lying around.

To be fair, I'd love a clean tidy "show home" type house, but I'd have to move out for that to be a possibility.

MaQueen · 06/10/2016 20:33

I'm with you itsall. I stage the guest room like that when we have people to stay, too.

I light a scented candle in their room before they arrive. Turn down the bed, close curtains and switch on bedside lamps so it looks welcoming. They have their own bathroom so I keep it stocked with toiletries and plenty of towels.

Ideally, I'd like to run my own boutique B&B Smile

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 06/10/2016 20:42

my loo walls are painted purple, I put out purple handwash and the purple loo roll that I keep hidden away from family especially for guests. also if its an evening visit I switch on my battery candles and day or night will spray my home made room spray and / or put the diffuser on or light a scented candle... oh and always clean loo!

ChocolateWombat · 06/10/2016 20:48

My mum has a whole cupboard of nicer versions of the cheap products she usually uses.

  • posh soap
  • fancy tissues in prettier boxes
  • expensive washing up liquid
  • tea bags - yes, usually uses Tesco Value, but pushes the boat out with Yorkshire Tea in a Yorskshire tin for guests - but wants them to think she drinks that all the time

The funny thing isn't the giving guests nice things, but wanting them to think you use those all the time.....when you don't.

Love the idea of people leaving high brow books out too.

DillieDoily · 06/10/2016 20:53

I do the nice hand soap thing too, as well as posh towels, impressive cookbook on display, fresh flowers, matching crockery (the wedding China which gets used twice a year!) and make sure all the nice and educational wooden toys are at front with all the cheap, plastic, flashing tat hiding behind!

Totally stealing the pineapple idea!

LadyB49 · 06/10/2016 20:56

We use the nice L'Occitane handwash and hand lotion that we get as a gift. When it's finished I refill with cheapie stuff that's the right colour. Sometimes it's even bubble bath that would never be used otherwise.

civilfawlty · 06/10/2016 20:57

On losing her best friend to breast cancer, Ephron said, “It’s taught me to always use the good bath oil”. I reflected on this and now I never save anything for best. I just go for it and enjoy the fancy candle/ shower gel etc. I really love it.

OrianaBanana · 06/10/2016 21:09

The only thing I do is hide all my trashy romance novels behind my set of Cambridge Press philosophy books!

Ooh Lorelai which ones? I work there Smile
