I have three - one doing a levels in the next couple of weeks, all huge sporty and growing,
i did bacon rolls today as pre exam thing and they all said they would happily eat a proper breakfast every day
I get up early - its no skin off my nose, maybe a bit more prep etc
Do any of you do cooked breakfasts every day? I think I should put more effort in

"I think breakfast in a busy household is easier to manage if people prepare their own. It's not difficult"

Having 6 people in my teensy kitchen all at once, trying to prepare breakfast would be hellish, I'd be committing murder before 8 am Shock

blackheartsgirl · 06/06/2016 12:06

I wish I had a table in my house reading all these replies. We had to turn our dining room into a bedroom and now we have no space at all anywhere for a table not even a fold away one

I still do breakfast most weekday mornings for ds 15 and 16- left to themselves they would choose chocolate mini weetabix every day- half a packet at a time! When they were about 3 I figured weetabix every day (the plain kind!) was too wheat heavy, neither like porridge and so I started doing eggs Tuesday and Thursday! Now I mix it up- fruit and yoghurt, egg and beans, bacon, cereal- and while I do it they take out the bins and the recycling!

I expect it will be chocolate cereal every day when they leave home though- until they realise the cost!

NewLife4Me · 06/06/2016 12:10

My family love cooked breakfasts, we don't fry anything though.
If you buy from the butchers and ask for unsalted, not smoked, no additives etc you should be fine. it can be a healthy meal if you follow the guidelines.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 06/06/2016 12:30

I tried bacon/eggs/other protein foods such as smoked fish and cheese every day for a while instead of carbs because of this whole "protein fills you up more than carbs" idea that I keep reading. Did it heck!

Not only did it leave me feeling greased out and unsatisfied it cost a fortune and I was always starving again by mid morning. Chuck some carbs in and I will easily be full till 1pm though. No one else in our house has the slightest inclination towards cooked breakfasts either. But if it works for you then go for it.

God, I wish my lot would eat eggs. I love poached on toast, but both are complete egg refusers.

StickTheDMWhereTheSunDontShine · 06/06/2016 12:47

Having a 400kcal bacon or egg sarnie for breakfast isn't going to be the thing that makes any teen fat.

JackandDiane · 06/06/2016 12:49

nancy - i whip up the egg - fry in a pan then shove it under the grill (to cook the top) it WHOOFS up like a souffle, cut into chunks in a bagel,

Like Macdonalds

My dad would take me to little chef for pancakes the night before exams started.
A cooked brekkie sounds lovely, a little extra kindness during the stress.

Balletgirlmum · 06/06/2016 13:13

Sprink - re sausage oatcakes.

They are Staffordshire oatcakes with sausages on ( I like them with bacon & tomatoes but dd doesn't lie bacon)

You roll them up with the filling inside.

Balletgirlmum · 06/06/2016 13:16

Also I've never fried an egg or rasher of bacon in my life. Bacon is grilled & eggs are boiled, poached or scrambled using no extra fat.

steppemum · 06/06/2016 13:55

I think we should coddle them all while we can, life is short and I want mine to think of home as a place of unconditional love, safety, chats and belly laughs, dry towels and a full fridge.

i spend so much time advocating the - make your sons independent, teach them to clean the house and cook etc - that I forget this is just as important.

WindPowerRanger · 06/06/2016 13:59

One of the things I will always remember my mother for with fondness when she is gone is the way she did look after us (daughters), especially at times of stress like exam week. She would do a lot like make us nice breakfast and a dozen other thoughtful little things (as would my father) despite the fact they worked full-time.

Just having someone take responsibility for some mundane things like breakfast prep, so you don't have to think abut it, is a really kind thing. I was grateful for it, and it meant a lot more to me than what some friends got, which was no support beforehand, and even dire warnings about what failure would mean, and then a flashy present afterwards.

Cook away, I say. You need to ring the changes so it isn't a fat-fest every day, as others have said.

I do oaty muffins you mix and refrigerate the night before then bake in the morning, porridge, omelettes with herbs (or curry spices), pancakes (Nigella does a recipe for pancake mix so you just take what you need and add wet ingredients in the right proportion-it's in Nigella Express). My two will eat almost anything if I add frozen raspberries to it!

Musicinthe00ssucks · 06/06/2016 14:07

Too much processed meat is not good OP. How about eggs (in loads of different ways!) and maybe beans and toast.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 06/06/2016 14:15

I've been making cooked breakfasts for ds for over a year now. Cereal just doesn't cut it when he's training every day. He has, eggs which are boiled, fried, scrambled, poached, bacon sometimes, pancakes, toasties, porridge, sausages occasionally, omelettes, waffles, left over for from the night before. Basically anything but cereal!

Waltermittythesequel · 06/06/2016 14:15

Do you have a recipe for the muffins, Wind?

WindPowerRanger · 06/06/2016 14:18

Not right here I'm afraid, I will have to dig it out, Walter. I will post it this evening.

WindPowerRanger · 06/06/2016 14:18

Eggy bread is another favourite.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 06/06/2016 14:19

I also make bread which he fills in the gaps with Wink
