thinking I should do a cooked breakfast most days for my sons

I have three - one doing a levels in the next couple of weeks, all huge sporty and growing,
i did bacon rolls today as pre exam thing and they all said they would happily eat a proper breakfast every day
I get up early - its no skin off my nose, maybe a bit more prep etc
Do any of you do cooked breakfasts every day? I think I should put more effort in

happybee - it is true that regular consumption of processed meats including bacon and sausages have been directly linked to increased rates of bowel cancer. However, as always it is worth looking at the actual numbers - your chances of getting bowel cancer are increased but your absolute risk is still very low! There is no clear link between processed meats and any other type of cancer.

However, there is no link between saturated fats and heart disease. There is also no reason whatsoever to limit eggs - that advice went out years ago. Eggs are pretty much a perfect food and no one should worry about the number of eggs they eat.

I agree it can be very confusing. However increasingly evidence is suggesting that much of what we have been taught about 'health foods' is wrong, and that much of what we think of as unhealthy is actually very good for us!

For me and DC, I tend to make something with eggs every day, or hot berries with Greek yoghurt ( microwave frozen berries... It's like a hot pudding for breakfast but v low carb).

MissRabbitHasTooManyJobs · 07/06/2016 21:13

Just wondering why this is in classics? Though haven't read all

Peasandsweetcorn · 07/06/2016 21:15

I work four days a week but, on the 5th, I love turning into a housewife & making the DC something hot for breakfast. I tend to bake whilst they're at school on that day too. There is something so heart warming about it.

Saramel · 07/06/2016 21:20

My son has poached eggs on toast everyday, before that bacon and egg sandwiches. Protein keeps you from getting hungry so quickly. happybee I couldn't have put it better myself.

lifesalongsong · 07/06/2016 21:24

Am I totally missing something?

Why is this in classics? OK it's nice to chat about children and breakfasts but have the trolls affected everything so much that this is worthy of classics?

Things ain't what thye used to be

JackandDiane · 07/06/2016 21:24

i am stunned it is in classics!

maybe as i am a bitter old witch normally

There's been so many 'look at bacon and you will get bowel cancer posts on here, that I decided to look it up, as I'm quite partial to bacon, sausage chorizo myself but have being trying to cut down.

According to the cancer research site:

WCRF’s analysis suggests that, among 1000 people who eat the most processed meat, you’d expect 66 to develop bowel cancer at some point in their lives – 10 more than the group who eat the least processed meat

So, whether you eat very little processed meat or practically live on the bloody stuff, either way you have a 90%+ chance of not getting bowel cancer, so it's not as bad as some people make out.

From my family history, its more likely to be a stroke or a heart attack that finishes me off anyway, so I think I'll worry a little less about the occasional bit of bacon from now on.

BIWI · 07/06/2016 21:33

Because it's a lovely thread about how important our children are to us, how we love to nourish them and care for them, and how short a period of time they actually end up living with us. The sense of loss once they leave home can be quite devastating.

JackandDiane · 07/06/2016 21:33

tomorrow is ham and cheese omelettes

I dont give a toss about the health warnings about bacon

Queenbean · 07/06/2016 21:34

Fuck me this is a lame thread. Why is it in classics????

JackandDiane · 07/06/2016 21:35

you say it how you see it punches arms playfully

We have a friend who is a colo-rectal surgeon at the Royal Free.

He's quite the sybarite and very non-preachy, but he won't have bacon - any bacon - in the house - he thinks it's that bad for your health.

We get through loads of bacon Blush

BIWI · 07/06/2016 21:37

Have you no soul, Queenbean?!

Queenbean · 07/06/2016 21:41

Well it's a sort of sweet thread but it's not a classic. Can't really see why anyone would nominate it for that. Although there's all sorts of shit in there these days.

There doesn't seem to be a note from MNHQ saying they've moved it either.

JackandDiane · 07/06/2016 21:44

do you know what is NICE about this thread
IT WAS NICE - people didn't really launch in and were cowbags. They can disagree but that was about it.

It reminded me of the old days - a bit of pissing about and teasing but ultimately helpful

We have pain au chocolate for tomorrow's breakfast. Yum.

WellErrr · 07/06/2016 21:49

THIS is what a Classics thread should be. Not 900 posts of placemarking.

I still want a full English though.

dementedma · 07/06/2016 21:56

Ds sacrifices breakfast for every possible second in bed before going to school. He will sometimes grab a brioche bun (Aldi, in case that sounds pretentious) and eat in in the car on the way to school but absolutely no time for cooked breakfasts here on school days. Weekends he gets bacon rolls or pancakes

DonkeyOaty · 07/06/2016 22:21

Oh! It's in Classics. That IS nice, dear.

(watching my big boy discuss triangles with his dad ready for Maffs in a fortnight)

(We're going to have omlet in the morning)

(I remember when your youngest rode his bike for the first time, Jack Rocks on rocking chair )

JackandDiane · 07/06/2016 22:23

ah mine Make Their Own Way - often via Tesco Metro on the way home it seems. They arrive with whiskers of bbq chicken reduced at the rotisserie

OP posts:
pontynan · 07/06/2016 23:27

we usually have a cooked breakfast but it's almost never the 'full English' - scrambled eggs one day, grilled bacon and tomatoes another, poached eggs another, sausage and beans another and, our family fave - make enough kedgeree for 2 days. Really is NOT unhealthy and is better start to day than just carbs.

happybee1 · 07/06/2016 23:28

Thanks saffy, I take onboard your comments on eggs, just wish my kids would eat them.
High salt and sat fat is linked to high blood pressure and raised cholesterol plus the small cancer link so I still would prefer to only eat once a week.

Becomingmom · 08/06/2016 00:25

Plain porridge, nuts and a banana.

Roussette · 08/06/2016 07:52

Plain porridge, nuts and a banana. - it can't quite match two slices of bloomer loaf, buttered (real butte)r, and stuffed with slices of crispy dry aged back bacon, can it?! Grin
