I genuinely thought if you pulled the reverse cord on ceiling fans, it would circulate warm air.

My friend thought the yellow average speed cameras on motorways were there to look for missing children.

I had another recent revelation but I can't remember it now Hmm

Placate is pronounced like 'plack-ate'.

PontyGirl · 21/11/2015 20:27

hopeful I put too much emphasis on the k that spelling

RaspberryOverload · 21/11/2015 20:28

Placate UK pronunciation

PantsOfGold · 21/11/2015 20:29

Thank you pontygirl and Hopefulanxiety - I can now use the word confidently!

Quietlifenotonyournelly · 21/11/2015 20:30

Just discovered today from MIL that dripping is made from the fat and juices from pork or beef. I had always thought that people fried sausages in lard and saved the fat from that to make dripping sandwiches.
Still would never touch it, yuk!

Quietlifenotonyournelly · 21/11/2015 20:33

Of not from.

NotDavidTennant · 21/11/2015 20:33

Doesn't Irn Bru have food colouring in it to make it orange?

toadflax · 21/11/2015 20:35

Pineapples don't grow on trees?
Insteps are at the top?
I thought My Little Ponies were invented by Pat Pending, because the name was written on their little hooves.

kerbs · 21/11/2015 20:35

The correct pronunciation of placate depends on which video you watch, they all differ slightly.

So I wouldn't be too confident pants.

imaginarypeople · 21/11/2015 20:36

You're right PontyGirl, it's Pla(y)-Kate.. From google sound.
It's an odd word though.

This thread is a revelation! How did I get these things so wrong... Googling the size of moles now.

kerbs · 21/11/2015 20:40

Apparently, and I'm not guilty of this one, lots of people think that the channel tunnel lies on the sea bed.

dementedma · 21/11/2015 20:41

I thought Hermione was pronounced Hermy own.

imaginarypeople · 21/11/2015 20:42

so MOLES , according to fun mole facts for kids easy science are the same size as mice or squirrels. The pictures I've seen on-line, seem to suggest they are about the size of your palm. So different to what I imagined, I thought they were long and similar in size to a rabbit. Those cartoons have got a lot to answer for, for one thing the claws are creepy.

MimsyBorogroves · 21/11/2015 20:43

I had no idea about New York, New York - the city/state thing until this thread.

It's a good job I already knew my geography was shite - all my revelations are geography based.

tigerdog · 21/11/2015 20:44

I thought the novelist Martin Amis' name was pronounced like the French would say it,"a-mee". I did a degree in English Literature and no one corrected me!

PantsOfGold · 21/11/2015 20:47

But no one has said you can pronounce placate as plasate - which is what all my instincts tell me to do, that is what confuses me! I'll move on now.

Teasgonecoldagain · 21/11/2015 20:52

Not my whole life, but just since MN, I thought the "I'm on" thread link at the top was a special chat board for ladies with their TOTM, only twigged a couple of week's ago. No idea why I thought that!

Sunbeam18 · 21/11/2015 20:52

Also thought it was Cold War due to Russia being cold. Will someone tell me the reason behind 'Iron Curtain' that I've clearly missed too?!

Garlick · 21/11/2015 20:54

I didn't know that about the immaculate conception! Not that it matters - just another fairy-tale twist.

The most AMAZING thing on this thread so far is Alyselisabeth's DH! He must be having you on, surely? How does he explain night and day, if the Earth doesn't turn? Don't know whether to be Shock or Hmm or Grin

Leelu6 · 21/11/2015 20:57

I thought Nicaragua was in Africa and Suriname was in Asia.

I also thought Midas touch was pronouned Mid-Ass touch.

kerbs · 21/11/2015 20:57

Having discovered on MN how to pronounce Moet and chorizo correctly, I shared my new found knowledge with DD.

Apparently it's much better to get them wrong and not be an arse.

annandale · 21/11/2015 20:59
Sunbeam
Leelu6 · 21/11/2015 20:59

Also used to pronounce Penelope as Pen-elop Blush

Quietlifenotonyournelly · 21/11/2015 21:01

This may out me but a friend of mine pronounced wasabi peas as washable peas and couldn't understand why I fell about laughing while wondering wtf anyone would want to eat them thinking that Confused

PoorFannyRobin · 21/11/2015 21:01

Have realized that I also somehow vaguely picture horses and riders as part of water polo.
