Ridiculous things you've only recently realised you've been wrong about your entire life

I genuinely thought if you pulled the reverse cord on ceiling fans, it would circulate warm air.

My friend thought the yellow average speed cameras on motorways were there to look for missing children.

I had another recent revelation but I can't remember it now Hmm

I thought the Outer Hebrides were somewhere really exotic until very, very recently.

I was amazed that the Falkland Islands weren't in Scotland, and Carlisle isn't in Wales.

TheNumberfaker · 21/11/2015 18:51

On top of another think coming that's twice I've been wrong this year! Blush

Trumpton · 21/11/2015 18:52

That Gibraltar is not an island. DH has been going there for years and was having a winge about being diverted to Malaga and hiring a car to get to Gib . I asked him about the ferry to get there and his face was Confused .
Was recounting this to DD last week and she was equally confused as she thought it was an island as well.

Bubblychocolate · 21/11/2015 18:52

I feel so much better now that other people thought it was hand gliding!

I only discovered it a few weeks ago, and have been stewing on it think what an absolute fool I am to be in my thirties and think it's hand gliding!

Sunbeam18 · 21/11/2015 18:53

Hang gliding? Had no idea! And I'm 43

LibrariesGaveUsP0wer · 21/11/2015 18:54

Also on geography, I too thought the Falkland islands were somewhere in Scotland and that County Durham was in Northern Ireland. Possibly until about sixth form...

Bubblychocolate · 21/11/2015 18:55

County Durham isn't in Northern Ireland?!

Hmm Blush

spritefairy · 21/11/2015 18:56

Same here for tuna. Only learnt this the other day.

And I think we should rename it hand gliding....so I don't have to admit I didn't know this either

Cookingongas · 21/11/2015 18:56

Blush just had to google County Durham - surely it has no place being outside of Ireland?!? I am duly ashamed.

ApocalypseNowt · 21/11/2015 18:56

There was a thread similar to this on MN a while ago.

That is where I learnt that those big lorries are called artic lorries. I always thought they were arctic lorries Blush

I am 34.

Oh and when I was little my sister and her friend told me Hawaii was near Glasgow. I believed this for a very very long time.....

ApocalypseNowt · 21/11/2015 18:58

Gibralta isn't an island..?

MooseAndSquirrel · 21/11/2015 18:58

I should stop reading these as I'm cringing on all the stuff I didn't know untill now!
The moon moving is nuts,
Gibraltar not an island, who knew?!
Weasels being tiny - thought they were much like ferrets,
Hang gliding kinda makes more sense but its always been hand gliding to me!
Guess I'm not as smart as I think GrinBlush

TheNumberfaker · 21/11/2015 18:59

In my 40s and hanging my head in shame.

dementedma · 21/11/2015 19:00

I am not admitting which one of these revelations has me sitting here open mouthed...Blush. Well I never!

Seasidedolly · 21/11/2015 19:00

Castrovalva I'm showing your OP to DH, he's the one that laughed for about an hour when I suggested putting the fan on reverse if he was cold the chilly bastard

Costacoffeeplease · 21/11/2015 19:02

I was relatively old before I understood - New York - so good they named it twice!

BeverlyGoldberg · 21/11/2015 19:03

That swans fly although to be fair I'm not sure if this is real or if DH is still shitting me. This will totally out me!

Alyselisabeth · 21/11/2015 19:04

Before I admit to these I will just say I realised a long long time ago (early-mid teens) but my brothers still never let me live them down.

I thought Bognor-Regis was in the Caribbean (I don't actually live that far from it either).

I also thought al-Qaeda was 1 person. First name Al surname Qaeda. :/

TheSkiingGardener · 21/11/2015 19:05

They do Beverley

Castrovalva · 21/11/2015 19:05

Justbatteringon · 21/11/2015 19:06

moose I too thought sinn fein was a person Gerry Adams to be exact and i don't know about you but I live in Northern Ireland Blush my dp told me otherwise.

Janeymoo50 · 21/11/2015 19:08

I know this will be very un PC.....BUT, when I was much, much younger I thought the black and white minstrels were real men.
.

kerbs · 21/11/2015 19:11

The virgin birth does not refer to Mary giving birth to Jesus, it refers to Mary's own birth. I was dumbfounded when I read this on here a few years ago.

Almost as amazed as discovering that your instep is on top of your foot.

Katedotness1963 · 21/11/2015 19:11

I couldn't understand why women complained about the menopause because it only lasted 15 minutes. I have no idea where I got that idea from but I was in my 20's before I found out the truth...

ThatsNiceDear · 21/11/2015 19:14

I found out on MN that it's MarshmAllow. I cannot - it's always been marshmEllow to me. I told my mum (she's in her 60s), she didn't believe me. We still call it marshmellow.
