the worst thing I have ever done due to child induced fatigue

I feel awful about this. DS had me up a lot last night as a result I got a maximum of 4 hour sleep, as a result I am bordering on exhausted, particularly with the other one just back at school.

Anyway we went out for a walk this morning to a park which is a good 15 minutes by car. I got home, went to get him out and realised I hadn't strapped him - I had been driving down an A road at 50 and he wasn't strapped him. I still feel awful about it. I think it is probably the worst thing I have ever done. We are snuggling up on the sofa now and resting. Has anyone else ever done similar? Also, how is it people manage to not be dopy when they are so tired?

Walked straight in front of a moving car. Amazingly, it stopped in time and the driver wasn't hurt.

DH and I had some hilarious, desperate conversations when DS was tiny about the things we would do for 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep. Would you lick so-and-so's armpit, eat a tramp's beard hair, etc. So funny to look back on now!

PurpleSkyatthewateringhole · 12/09/2015 21:19

One time I forgot to fasten the baby car seat in the car. So baby Ds was fastened into the car seat but the car seat wasn't secured into the car.

I also dropped a cup of coffee down me mid presentation.

But 6years later, the absolute worst thing I did because of tiredness was eat to stay awake. A couple of biscuits with a cup of coffee, it didn't seem much. Now I'm a stone overweight.

Just nominated this thread for classics... I've been in tears laughing, all in recognition of the things I did when the dc were younger.

BeccaMumsnet · 14/09/2015 14:07

Hi everyone - this thread has received quite a few MN Classics nominations, and we can see why. We'll pop it over there now Grin

Squidiot · 14/09/2015 16:23

Grin Flowers Thanks Becca.

Squidiot · 14/09/2015 16:29

With hindsight I am almost fondly remembering some of the things I did.

I once put a teabag into a mug and poured freshly brewed coffee on top. I only realised what I'd done when I got to the bottom of the mug and wondered what the disgusting looking brown thing was...

Also tried to get a very fast asleep baby to latch on before realising it was the cry of seagulls that woke me, not dd Confused. Another time I tried to pat dh back to sleep when he made a sound Grin.

I still hand coats, shoes, school bags to the wrong child so the baby brain has never really left me Sad

Tiredemma · 14/09/2015 16:34

Poured Anbesol over my noodles (believing it to be soy sauce)

Showered with my glasses on

Squidiot · 14/09/2015 16:43

It's only this weekend that I sat down on the passenger side and wondered where the steering wheel was Grin. dd2 gave me a very funny look but in my defence I drive on the continent a lot so am quite pleased that once I find the steering wheel I generally manage to drive on the correct side of the road at least Blush.

bigkidsdidit · 14/09/2015 17:03

I'm ROARING at 'tried to put the cat in the jumperoo' Grin

That desperate search for the baby in the bed isn't sleep deprivation j don't think. It's something hormonal. I had it three times and it remains the most frightening experience of my life. Desperately looking for ds, convinced I'd killed him and he was trapped under the mattress. Dh was shouting 'he's in his cot' but I was in a trance, almost. Horrible .

SilentService · 14/09/2015 17:18

Walked out of JL with a £70 moses basket with sandals and and clothes for ds1 in it - hot tired late pregnancy with toddler in tow. I had to leave that moment . I found stuff next time I went back to the car 3 days later.

Left Ds1 at gym class - we lived round the corner, the gym owners walked him home. The doorbell woke me from my stupor on the sofa.

Gone to supermarket to buy stuff.. Given up halfway round abandoned trolley and gone home empty handed getting packet sarnies and crisps from garage on way home as alternative groceries.

Imisscheese · 14/09/2015 21:35

Recognise lots of these. DP found my tablet in the fridge one evening. I frequently wake up in the middle of the night and rescue DP from the edge, thinking he's DS.

WhereTheFuckIsMyFuckingCoat · 15/09/2015 01:44

I have a friend who had three month old dts, who, although were pretty good sleepers, still left her exhausted and with terrible baby brain. She had a terrible headache, and mixed herself a couple of soluble solpadien(sp?). As she gulped them down, a terrible burning started in her mouth and oesophagus - it was only at this point that she realised she was gulping down two dissolved Milton sterilising tablets. She was absolutely terrified and very very sore, but the nhs24 nurse and me, her dad, and neighbour who she also called in hysterics reassured her that she would be fine, just have very clean innards!!

ChipsandGuac · 15/09/2015 01:56

I once came in from DC1s school run, desperate for a pee and left the front door wide open without realising. I came out and there was an old woman stood at the door asking, "Are they your children?" DCs3 and 4 had got out the pushchair, ran out the door, ran across the road and were running towards the main road laughing their heads off. I have never run so fast in my life. Toddlers can run realllllly fast when they're doing something they're not supposed to.

LMGTFY · 15/09/2015 09:02

This will out me to friends but never mind! Worst thing I did was drive into a river, there is a road near me that is under water twice a day as the river is tidal. Ds1 would only go to sleep if drove him round, for some reason this day I took this road and came across a large puddle, at no point did my brain register that to the left of me was the river and this 'large puddle' was attached to that, nor that I could stop and turn around, it just went 'fuck, the tide is coming' and for some reason the logical thing to do was put my foot down! Bloody hell I was lucky we escaped with only a reasonably small part of the car being ripped off, paid for that mistake in car repairs and 10 years of piss taking by DH!

Went to local shops with the buggy and came home to the front door being left open. Thank goodness we had a hedge then to hide the mistake as the house was en route to/from the station so had a lot of footfall. So embarrassing!! dH took the house phone to work instead of his mobile (when mobiles looked like house phones!). I once fell asleep in the afternoon & woke up 5 mins pre-pick up. I literally jumped out of bed into the car to get to school & I wasn't even late (but must've looked shocking).

Squidiot · 17/09/2015 09:29

dd just kindly reminded me that I once got halfway to the local shops wearing one slipper and one sandal, then thought 'what the hell' and carried on walking. I was too tired to walk back home to change shoes and then walk all the way back to the shops with baby and toddler in tow Grin

Illstartexercisingtomorrow · 22/09/2015 21:26

I went to the bathroom desperate for a wee, washed my hands and left. Realised a few moments later I had forgotten to actually wee.

JoyceDivision · 22/09/2015 21:36

I still stand in front of the house door (with school bags, pe bags, shopping coats etc hanging off my arms) really tired, needing a wee, and patiently waiting for door to unlock while I point my car key fob at it and keep pressing the button Blush

I left bath on and forgot. Blamed in on dcs for months until I was bit drunk one night and fessed up to dh.

Devora · 22/09/2015 21:56

I once saw a car drive off, leaving a buggy on the pavement. In the basket was a pack of nappies and a wallet containing £300.

I took it to the police station and three days later the owner rang to thank me. She said it had taken her 48 hours to even notice the loss - she was heavily pregnant with her fourth child Grin

FrancisdeSales · 16/11/2015 05:53

I was watching my 5 and 3 yr old dc's playing and then suddenly screamed "OMG where's the baby!"

I was breastfeeding him.

FrancisdeSales · 16/11/2015 06:01

Also good friend said to me "You know when you have a newborn and you walk through doorways and knock their head on the doorframe?"

I replied a whispered horrified "yes!".

She said "Well sleeps deprivation affects your depth perception".

3sugarsplease · 16/11/2015 06:14

When the baby started crying I picked up the TV control and turned the volume down Blush

torontonian · 17/11/2015 22:44

Some of these are hilarious, ladies.
It seems that the phone in the fridge is pretty popular. Thinking why my DS puts his piggy bank in the toy fridge lol

  • I have both locked myself out of the house and left the front door wide open
  • Put a pizza in the top part of the oven and turn on only the bottom part (they are completely separate)
  • I need to put 10 consecutive alarms for night feedings or I will not wake up.
  • Went to do laundry and forgot completely about DD in her playmat (she was 3 months old)
  • Left my laptop at Starbucks and didn't realize until I got to the office
  • On green light, I went ahead on two perpendicular pedestrian crossings (second was red, I didn't even look)
  • Didn't notice there are two subway stations with the same name (but one us East and another is West). I went to the wrong one
  • forget to reply emails for so long thato then I am ashamed and I pretend they went to spam and I never received them
  • mistake neighbour's names when talking to them
mimi14 · 19/11/2015 22:37

Put 10 day old DD in her pram, got myself and 4 year old DS ready to go out, and off we went. I turned round to lock the door and noticed DD inside still, sleeping peacefully. STILL didn't twig that we were leaving her behind. Got to the top of the drive and told DS to hold onto the buggy as it was a busy road. He looked confused and said "we left DD sleeping in the kitchen!"
