the worst thing I have ever done due to child induced fatigue

I feel awful about this. DS had me up a lot last night as a result I got a maximum of 4 hour sleep, as a result I am bordering on exhausted, particularly with the other one just back at school.

Anyway we went out for a walk this morning to a park which is a good 15 minutes by car. I got home, went to get him out and realised I hadn't strapped him - I had been driving down an A road at 50 and he wasn't strapped him. I still feel awful about it. I think it is probably the worst thing I have ever done. We are snuggling up on the sofa now and resting. Has anyone else ever done similar? Also, how is it people manage to not be dopy when they are so tired?

And have definitely done the leaving the door wide open all night with the keys in thing a few times when ds was very young. And in the middle of winter. Woke up wondering why the flat was so fucking cold! And have left car doors wide open with my purse on the seat, all night. Purse wasn't there in the morning funnily enough.

Slow cooked dinosaur Grin

I have:

  • Walked around all day with my trousers on inside out, only noticed when in Starbucks at the end of the day, XH (DH at the time) laughed and said he wanted to see how long it'd take for me to notice. Hmm
  • Panicked that I couldn't find my wallet anywhere, cue mad rush around the house, tearing the place apart before having to go to work without it. Came home in the evening, opened the freezer and found it nestling in a bag of frozen mice (we had pet snakes at the time).
  • Once went away for the weekend and left the door open. Not unlocked, wide open. Luckily lived in the middle of nowhere so nothing happened!
  • Used to listen to the radio on my mobile phone. Clicked the button to turn on the radio, walked into the kitchen holding said phone, then the radio started up and for a moment was genuinely terrified that there were strange voices coming out of my hand.
  • On a couple of occasions I've asked for cashback, then automatically thrown it in the bin with the receipt on my way out of the shop, had to rake around in bin for it to the amusement of Tesco security man.
  • Countless times not been able to work out why dinner isn't cooking when I hadn't turned the oven on.
  • Tried to open my front door with an Oyster card.
  • Once walked up to a friend, and said "Hi, how are you? Yeah good thanks, and you? Yeah I'm alright thanks", then realised she was supposed to say some of that.

I'm amazed I'm still alive, frankly.

To make a phone call from work we have to press 9 first to get an outside line. During mat leave I tried to do this several times from home and wondered why the number wouldn't work.

seastargirl · 08/09/2015 21:31

Locked myself out of a hotel room when I was away with work. My one chance of a decent nights sleep and I must have dreamt I heard my son crying, got up and walked to his room, but then found myself in a hotel corridor. Had to make a sheepish dash to reception.

I've also left all my shopping in the trolley at tesco and not realised until I'd got home. Apparently it happens quite frequently!

LibrariesGaveUsP0wer · 08/09/2015 21:36

Oh yes, tried to get through the work security pass with my Oyster. Repeatedly.

TheFormidableMrsC · 08/09/2015 21:39

Had second baby at 42, was utterly exhausted as he did not sleep, ever. In an absolute coma, I put parka over PJ's to take then 13 year old DD to school. Pulled over in bus stop to sling her out with the hope that nobody would see me. Saw Headmaster marching towards car to tell me off for parking at bus stop so made to pull away quickly only to find I had put my car in reverse and slammed into the car behind me. This resulted in me not only damaging somebody's car, being told off by Headmaster, holding up the traffic due to bus not being able to get into bus stop but worst of all, having to get out of the car wearing checked PJ bottoms, Ugg boots, no bra and a parka with bed hair and no make up in order to exchange details with other driver. My daughter has never forgiven me. Luckily other driver spotted baby, realised I was exhausted and was lovely about the whole thing. No harm done to either car in the end. My credibility as a parent, however, was shot to pieces and I will forever be known as the bus stop mum. Actual bollocks Sad

Got very cross that my work fob wouldn't work to open the door of my house and that the key didn't fit in the lock of the door at work because it was for home
The microwave didn't work when I swiped my card at it
The oven didn't turn on after I didn't program it to start but put the food in it anyway
That the dog wasn't stop banging the door to come in after I hadn't opened it for him but had put his dinner bowl down (glass door visible for pooch)
That the pram on the side looked exactly like mine as I walked past it carrying DS home (it was mine)
That the dog was being very slow when in fact was not the dog I was dragging a large bag of rubbish I hadn't put in the bin and yes the dog was tied to the bin poor muppet.

ThomasRichard · 08/09/2015 21:51

Actual lol at dragging the dog bin bag.

These are all worse than mine. I'm feeling quite smug now.

whatdoIget · 08/09/2015 22:00

Not a mistake I made, but I hate going in lifts and am always worried they'll get stuck. When ds was about 4 months I was so so tired, I remember wishing the lift I was in would get stuck for a good while so I could lie down and go to sleep and hopefully be awoken by some nice firefighters

CocktailQueen · 08/09/2015 22:01

Wittery - burying your baby in the garden!!

And throwing your bag in a lake!

nilbyname · 08/09/2015 22:01

This is the perfect thread!

Revered re car into a wall with the boot open, boot door fucked, and had to call FIL to come and help me.
Got glasses due to poor vision which was down to NO effing sleep!

Left DS in a shop.

nilbyname · 08/09/2015 22:03

Out DS under my bed after a feed instead of the Moses basket.

Thought dh was a ghost and karate chopped him as he stood over the cot.

Pobspits · 08/09/2015 22:06

When Ds was little I used to deliberately go to the park over the road and walk the same circuit every time so I could walk with my eyes closed because I genuinely used to worry my eye muscles would give up due to lack of rest otherwise!

nilbyname · 08/09/2015 22:06

Tried to buy many many things with no wallet or card. Worst was a full Christmas shop....my local teach was not happy!

FuryFowler · 08/09/2015 22:08

My friend once told me that she got to a dog walking park about 20mins from home and before she'd gotten out of the car herself, her dog was outside the car next to her door! She then realised she'd driven a the way with dog in boot and boot door wide open! Lucky the dog didnt jump out!

Youarentkiddingme · 08/09/2015 22:12

Don't worry - I forgot to strap DS in his baby car seat once. I mean completely forgot - to out the car seat in the car and strap it in Grin
Luckily I didn't get far before looking in rear view mirror and seeing him still on the pavement.
He was 4 weeks old Blush

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 08/09/2015 22:15

Tried to give a night feed, and couldn't understand why DS hadn't latched on and was still wailing. Then I realised I was holding him upside down and those limbs flailing around were legs.

catzpyjamas · 08/09/2015 22:23

DM told me that she once went to the local supermarket, did her shopping and carried the heavy bags half a mile home. She got home and wondered why she'd carried the bags instead of putting them in the bottom of the pram?
...the pram that was sitting outside the shop with baby me asleep in it.

MrsFrankRicard · 08/09/2015 22:23

I have done the not strapping into car seat one, once, DS1 was about 3yo I think, drove for around 5 minutes before he said 'hey guys, think you have forgotten something?' Grin.

I continually leave my keys in the front door.

Have put dinner in the oven and not switched it on.

Twolefttoes · 08/09/2015 22:24

museumofham I actually did that Sad. Ds was teething, in the middle of the night in the car I went downstairs and drew up a measure of Calpol, gave it ds, we all went back to sleep. The next morning I couldn't understand why the benelyn bottle was on the side. Then it dawned on me, I was mortified but thankfully no harm done. Always turn the light on now.

I have also put dirty nappies in the wash, left doors unlocked frequently, run out of petrol, cried at work lots and taken him to nursery when he should have been with family and vice versa.

To be fair ds did have severe reflux until aged 3, so I was very sleep deprived. I think dh appreciates that I am now once again able to have a conversation in the evening.

Quietlifenotonyournelly · 08/09/2015 22:25

Crying at upside down baby feed Grin

BlanketsAndBiscuits · 08/09/2015 22:25

Luckily I don't drive as I'm certain the car related ones would have happened to me.

Forgetting I actually had a baby and wondering whose baby was crying.

Shushing a pillow regularly

The funniest one now which still gets brought up.
Poor DP getting into bed. In my crazy, fuzzy mind I was convinced he had jumped on DD and killed her. Poor bloke was shoved across the room, me screaming he killed her and scrambling through the bedding and looking under the bed for DD body. DD was fast asleep in the moses basket. Bless him, he calmed me down, rubbing my back with a Hmm and Confused.

Bad times Blush

wickedlazy · 08/09/2015 22:40

I worked the late shift in a supermarket on Saturdays, and was so tired when I went back after maternity leave, I fell asleep at the checkout a few times Blush
