It's driving me crazy Grin

Here's a link to the John Lewis advert- take a look at the old movie showing on the television at 1 minute in, please.

Everybody thinks it's from It's A Wonderful Life, the embrace you can see at 3:21 in this clip:

But it really really isn't.

This isn't going well.

OttiliaVonBCup · 08/11/2014 23:28

She actually reminds me of Edith Piaff in La Vie en Rose for some reason.
It's time I left the thread...

QueenOfThorns · 08/11/2014 23:29

OK, a serious suggestion before I go to bed - has Olivia de Havilland been considered yet?

ArsenicSoup · 08/11/2014 23:33

Not de Havilland. Nor Joan Fontaine.

I do think I have seen her in something though. Such an annoyingly short clip. Hard to be sure.

This is like an itch.

ArsenicSoup · 08/11/2014 23:34

He is wearing pyjamas and dressing gown, right?

cerealqueen · 08/11/2014 23:36

its a clip made by Adam&EveDDB, not an old movie clip at all.
I asked AKA, and that is what they told me. so somebody upthead was right. and it's why nobody recognised it. Though not sure how they know

ArsenicSoup · 08/11/2014 23:37

Who are AKA?

PedantMarina · 08/11/2014 23:43

OK, I'm clearly losing it. IMDB are probably going to have me on a "danger money" list or something, but I've been trawling pictures of star[let]s, esp after some of the suggestions.

One thing I learned long ago was to ALWAYS look at the ears. Everything else about a person can be altered by even a small amount of make-up, but people rarely bother with ears, and they're as individual as fingerprints.

So, check out the advert actress' ears, and then look at this publicity pic of Ann Sheridan. Note in particular the bit of bulbousness on the inner of the outside ridge, matched with the outer of the middle ridge: if the ear were on a head that's straight up/down, it would be apx 1 o'clock, when she's kissing, it's a little past 3 o'clock. I theenk I see this on the ears of Ann Sheridan in that photo still. The publicity photo's ear is slightly rounder overall, but that could just be the camera angle/tilt of Ann's head. The cheeks (esp the apples of them - the sides/bones are easier to tweak with rouge), the chin, the lips, all seem to be similar. But maybe somebody with better res on their pooter would

Kings Row (with Ronald Reagan) is roughly of that era, so her face would be similar. In a still of that film, Reagan is wearing pyjamas with a loose collar, which could be the back of the man in the advert.

Of course, by the time I post this, we might have had a real answer back...

Anybody want to take one for the team and watch Kings Row?

PedantMarina · 08/11/2014 23:44

X-post! I am SOOO going to bed now...

cerealqueen · 08/11/2014 23:47

Me. I said it wasn't an old clip. But I didn't know that for sure.

InfinitySeven · 08/11/2014 23:52

I work with some people from the ad agency... I'm back on Tuesday. If you don't know by then, give me a poke and I'll do what I can!

TheWoollybacksWife · 09/11/2014 00:12

My ideal afternoon involves Rebecca, a pot of Earl Grey and a slice of cake. Bliss

I agree Gregory Peck was handsome but my leading man was Cary Grant. He was still breathtaking as an old man. I must dig out Arsenic and Old Lace to watch this week and I'll also look up some of the recommendations up thread. I love finding a "new" old film.

I'm trying (with limited success) to pass on my love of classic films to my DDs, my late DDad was a film buff and I got my interest from him.

ArsenicSoup · 09/11/2014 00:12

We will Infinity Smile

If it's fake, it's pretty good. I wonder if they'd make us some new old films?

Girlwhowearsglasses · 09/11/2014 00:16

I hope whoever she is (if it's done to order) gets to see the amazing parade of stars she is being compared to! How much of a lift is that?

Curlipples · 09/11/2014 00:17

My first thought was Rita Hayworth.

BOFster · 09/11/2014 00:22

WHY would they fake it? How expensive is the copyright of a one second clip of 1930s British B movie?

Male or Female BOF?

BOFster · 09/11/2014 00:28

Either!
