  1. Have smeared the twins' cradle cap liberally with rapeseed oil, left, combed through, left Dentinox on in the bath for ten mins, rinsed through, and it all came off in big satisfying clumps. I got a bizarre amount of pleasure from this.
  1. I bit the bullet and got Plumbs round to reupholster my awkwardly shaped sofa and it's gorgeous! And the covers are just about less tricky to take on and off than a sleeping bag is to put back in its bag IYKWIM and they're machine washable. I, embarrassingly, may have punched the air. I need to get out more.
  1. Storing complete bedding sets inside one of the pillow cases has led to uncrumpled sheets and duvets that MATCH.
  1. Tomatoes out of the fridge are sweet and juicy.

I is DELIGHTED with the MN service. Please continue revolutionising my life Smile.

Furniture polish stops hinges squeaking and helps curtain rings slide on wooden rails. Also works on plastic hook and rail set ups.

yourlittlesecret · 10/04/2014 15:39

Use clothes pegs to fasten opened food packets and bags such as flour or frozen veg. Much cheaper than special clips.

MummytoMog · 10/04/2014 16:39

Little swimmers tip good - reusable swim nappies are brilliant though, and not as hardcore as using cloth nappies full stop. We have Imse Vimse swim nappies and one of ours is on a fourth child already and still looks LOVELY.

I googled this one so probably everybody knows it. When your laptop keyboard is so clogged up with dust/crisp crumbs/hair that the keys start to stick:
Switch off and unplug
Use hairdryer to blow off bits
Wrap a teaspoon handle or something similar in a wetwipe and clean between the keys
Use hairdryer again
Don't eat crisps while mumsnetting

If you bleed on some fabric, spit on it before the blood dries. Apparently there is an enzyme in saliva that somehow apps the blood from staining. It only works on your own blood. I have only tried this once and didn't really believe it would work but the blood just started fading in front of my eyes.

Poppiesway · 10/04/2014 19:33

Do you think wd40 would get a few spots if black permanent hair dye out of my new cream carpet ??

pud1 · 10/04/2014 19:35

AIBU to be sat here bursting with pride for posting the dishwahser tablet oven door cleaning method.

my other one is if you spill cooking oil cover it with cheap table salt. leave for a few mins and sweep it up. much easier than trying to soak it up

Slackgardener · 10/04/2014 19:52

Thank you pud I just cleaned my glass induction hob - which I thought was scored and ruined when in fact it was burnt on grease from a cast iron saucepan. I'm beyond pleased!

MushroomSoup · 10/04/2014 20:12

Best tip ever from me: Don't leave your mooncup where the dog can reach it.

Furball · 10/04/2014 20:19

When you take your socks off pair them into a ball and wash like that. no more sock matching and no more odd socks Smile

then I just put the balls on the radiator to dry - easy

QwertyBird · 10/04/2014 20:43

Furball- that drives me mad! They don't wash properly, especially sports socks, and take longer to dry. Wash them in a net bag or pillow case. The washing powder tablet bags are great for baby socks!

ilovepowerhoop · 10/04/2014 20:45

it drives me mad when dh's socks are rolled in a ball as they dont wash properly (especially his smelly sports socks). I'd rather they went in singly tbh

ushiemama · 10/04/2014 21:23

Stained or scratched acrylic bath....Duraglit wadding or Brasso does the job.
Expel air out of plastic bottles & replace the lid...Saves space in recycling.

A few grains of rice in the salt pot will stop the salt being damp.

Blocked toilet...Push floor mop in toilet bowl, then flush & plunge together.

Slow emptying bath...Put your heel over plug hole & plunge with foot whilst bath is emptying to dislodge problem.

Crazy8 · 10/04/2014 21:26

Does the dishwasher table cleaning method work on the enamel top part of an aga? I have tried and tried to clean the enamel but greases is stuck on.

Cocolepew · 10/04/2014 21:30

Baby oil cleans stainless steel, use a clothes brush to clean your lampshades.

pud1 · 10/04/2014 21:44

Crazy8 - some one up thread has done the aga with it and she said it worked brilliantly. not sure which part of aga she did though

Cocolepew · 10/04/2014 22:04

If your nail varnish has gone gungy, pour a little bit of remover into it and give it a shake.

peanutbutterandbanana · 10/04/2014 22:15

Thank you whoever it was for the NAIR tip - now have a hair-free plughole in both the bath and the shower Grin

Loulabella · 10/04/2014 22:52

Cornflour sprinkled over and in nappy for nappy rash (I know powder on girls bits should generally be avoided but one application of this works like magic even when the skin is weeping). Also cornflour is good for: getting sand off, putting in socks and swimming caps to aid dressing at beach/pool, sprinkled over a knot to loosen it, and mixed with water to a paste for sunburn, bites, stings. Cornflour-water mix also makes fascinating gloop for kids play -it has weird wet/dry and solid/runny properties. Cornflour gloop in outdoor play is easy to clear up - it drys back to powder and can be swept up. A good all-round addition to the changing bag!

Koothrapanties · 10/04/2014 22:52

To the poster who said about dry shaving your legs with talc if you forget in shower, I tried if. My legs are now red raw with shaving rash. I moisturised afterwards, where did I go wrong? I was so happy afterwards as it was so quick and easy, but now I'm really regretting it!

Loulabella · 10/04/2014 23:05

This might be common knowledge but I only recently learned ....if you're eating mussels and (like me) have trouble wrestling them from their shells, use an empty shell like tweezers to extract the rest easily and elegantly (and perfect etiquette I'm told).

RubyFlint · 11/04/2014 00:06

I love these. As of today my tomatoes live out of the fridge. Thank you!

To use up an old lemon. Cut in half and spear it on a prong in the dishwasher for extra cleaning power. Brightens dishes and gives a fresh lemony finish! Like the lemon tablets but nicer.

The best thing I discovered from MN is to wear a nude bra with a white T shirt, not a white bra. I'm 44 and I honestly didn't know this FFS.

Lioninthesun · 11/04/2014 01:58

I am in the white bra camp personally - I would rather people think I was wearing one than not! I think nude undies look pensioner/50's though so maybe part of the problem!
My other life changer was finding an ergonomic potato masher similar to this www.cuisipro.com/en/Cooking/Fiberglass-Potato-Masher-plu71-12305.html You don't get cramp and can put bodyweight into it Smile
Blood/spit enzymes makes perfect sense to me - spit on a cut to cleanse it and make it heal faster, something to do with binding the platelets and therefore I imagine less of them to be absorbed into carpet weave. GCSE Biology there tho so may be wrong!
Has anyone else done avocado chocolate mousse? Avocado+choc drinking powder whisked up with a fork. Sounds odd but may just get your kids to eat it and makes for a relatively health conscious TV snack Grin

MummyAbroad · 11/04/2014 03:25

just remembered another one I got from MN ages ago - perfect fix for broken eyeshadow powder or face powder:

Pour rubbing alcohol into the crushed powder in its original holder, mix into a paste using a cotton bud or pointy end of an eyeshadow brush, then leave it overnight. The alcohol will all evaporate away leaving you will a sold powder lump once again.
