The Sport Newspaper Should be Above Kids Eye Level

I've posted about this before when we had a giant topless woman on Election Day, and eventually let it go...not wanting to be branded a prude.

BUT, once again we've just called into the shop and my 8 year old shrieks 'oh my God that's gross'...

The Sport, woman bent over, arse in the air and to my ASTONISHMENT vaginal lips on show!

I stayed calm and asked DD1 why this was gross..."why take pictures that are rude, what if children come in and see people's privates".

I'm not against porn, but I am against kids seeing inappropriate stuff - and some of the images on The Sport front page are just far too much to be on the bottom at kids level (both our local shops have them on the bottom shelf). They are supposed to cover the pics up but as the day goes on they get messed up etc.

Angry.

OK I am posting I am no prude but I really wish people would stop forcing our dc to see things like this .

Colliecross · 29/06/2010 15:40

I would not shop anywhere where I knew my children could see anything like this.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 29/06/2010 15:42

Could it be linked to the "Let Girls be Girls" campaign? It is relevant as it is exposing young girls to the idea that this is what they should aspire to.

palacemonkey · 29/06/2010 15:58

I would love to use our local newsagent, but I don't for precisely this reason - there is no need for that to be on the front page.

BrittanyBeers · 29/06/2010 16:00

It's against the law to show indecent images to a child, unless I am mistaken.
This is porn.
Surely every retailer who does not hide this should, theoreticaly, be put on the sex offenders register?

GrendelsMum · 29/06/2010 16:05

Count me in. Who do we contact to complain?

What can we do? Few things to try...

I've written to my MP, since the Home Office issued a report on the sexualisation of young people saying the voluntary guidelines should be made mandatory and Lads Mags should be rated 15 and up high etc. so don't see why this 'news' paper should be any different imho

www.writetothem.com/

I wrote to Coop because they are they only chain to stock it (other supermarkets don't).

Complaints direct to The Sport would be useless I suspect?

I'm waiting for a call from the National Federation of Retail Newsagents (NFRN) to tell him we're not happy and see if there's anything they can do.

I would like these images to be removed from childs eyes, its not nice nor dignified.

FolornHope · 29/06/2010 16:32

yes MAKRS AND SPENCER GARAGES

CwtchyBlueMama · 29/06/2010 16:44

These type of pics are NOT for children to look at,its about time something was done about it.

saslou · 29/06/2010 17:49

Vile picture. Bet her mother is so proud!

webwahm · 29/06/2010 18:23

ummm seems it's her knickers!

Even so, the point is my 8yr old daughter thought it was her 'privates' and so did other adults so maybe that was what they wanted to achieve?

Feel a right numpty now!

FolornHope · 29/06/2010 18:38

god i LOVE that website with the cute little boy

FolornHope · 29/06/2010 18:39

can we get a MNHQ verdict on this?
Affects more of us than the girls one

webwahm · 29/06/2010 19:35

FolornHope - that's just it, never done anything like this so don't know how to get under MNHQ radar (except have a popular post in the Campaign section).

I will lend my support.

KickArseQueen · 29/06/2010 20:10

support added, would a letter to our mps help?

CoupleofKooks · 29/06/2010 20:46

yes good thread, thank you

webwahm · 29/06/2010 20:57

i wrote to my MP - family friendly newsagents pls!

Just to remind you though, my kid/me/others thought it was her labia but looks like it's her knickers (done on purpose??)

OP posts:
CoupleofKooks · 29/06/2010 21:06

i don't want my children seeing women pictured like this
the labia part is kind of irrelevant

webwahm · 29/06/2010 21:08

...except I'm rather embarrassed that I thought it was and kicked up this fuss on that basis

OP posts:
CoupleofKooks · 29/06/2010 21:09

well i think it is worth kicking up a fuss about
i'd imagine it was not a complete accident it looked like her vulva

webwahm · 29/06/2010 21:28

it lets The Sport 'test the waters' and have the last laugh by saying we're kicking up a fuss over nothing because she's wearing knickers. They run a porn empire, and use the cheap Sport as bait, they know what that looks like!

OP posts:
Kaloki · 29/06/2010 21:46

Just posting to lend my support. It's not appropriate for child level displays.
