Hi all
I'm very pleased to see so much support around supporting products which are not sexualising young girls. However, I think the boundaries have been so blurred for so many years that stores may not fully realise their responsibility when choosing products to stock.
I recently went into Accessorize - a respected, quality High Street store, and noticed that the main thread of their World Cup Football Accessories range (I imagine to be aimed at 5-11 year olds) was themed around the phrase 'I wanna be a WAG!'.
I find it shocking that such a shop is encouraging these kind of sexually-based aspirations in girls that young. What's wrong with saying 'I wanna be a baller' instead? Oh, that's not 'sexy' enough. There are purses, bus passes, bags and all sorts available in sparkles and glitter - not doing much to disguise the obvious objectification of our young females.
If anybody is aware of how we can get them to withdraw these items I'd definitely be interested in leading soemthing.
