Every Disabled Child Matters Constituency Pledge - please sign up

In response to many suggestions from posters, MNHQ has made contact with Every Disabled Child Matters, an umbrella group for some of the major special needs organisations.

The first fruit of this collaboration is that Mumsnet is supporting EDCM's Constituency Pledge campaign. The idea is for as many people as possible (not limited to parents of children with disabilities or special needs) to contact candidates who will be standing in the upcoming General Election and ask them to sign up to do the following if they're elected:

  1. Meet with disabled children, young people and their families to discuss key issues of concern to them.

  1. Raise these issues of concern, and promote rights and resources for disabled children, young people and families from their constituency in Parliament.

  1. Visit local services for disabled children and their families on a regular basis.

  1. Support measures to transform services for disabled children and their families, such as the Aiming High for Disabled Children (AHDC) programme in England.

  1. Find out how funding is being used in their constituency to improve services for disabled children, young people and their families.

You can approach your MP and other local candidates and ask him or her to sign the pledge.

thanks
MNHQ

Done.

So many people are unaware of the issues faced by children with disabilities and their families. I think the idea of MPs regularly discovering and addressing these issues in their local area and raising them in parliament is a fantastic idea.

EDCM has a page on Facebook for anyone who is on there and wants to join it! I have written on their page and said that EDCM has linked with Mumsnet.

I signed up, and emailed the prospective parliamentary candidates. One had replied and invited "my organisation" to meet with him.

I forwarded this, only to be told "Oh we have no meetings in your area, but if you would like to set up your own event or meet with him there is advice on how to do so in the campaigning toolkit".

I shall probably still reply to the candidate, and possibly may meet with him, but I DO feel dropped in it a bit! I have Asperger's myself!
