Mumsnet founder puts users’ questions to Chancellor Rishi Sunak

Hello

As you may have heard if you’re one of the 200 Mumsnet users who posted on this thread yesterday with a question for the Chancellor Rishi Sunak, Mumsnet founder Justine went to the Treasury yesterday to grill the Chancellor.

We had so many brilliant questions and we wish we could have asked them all but we chose a selection that we thought best represented the topics raised - from economic policy and inequality to women's rights and from the Chancellor's tax affairs to childcare.

You can watch it here. Let us know what you think!

It's funny how MN repeatedly manages to make politicians look like patronising, disingenous hollow-people.

I wonder why they underestimate the users of the platform Mumsnet? What in the name of lavendar hankies could it possibly be?

Would he talk to the CBI like this? I think not.

All the help just in case we don’t know about it 🙄surestart vouchers, childcare payments -

And he didn't even know the amounts "errrr eight or nine pounds"....Angry

What a twat.

Well said! 👏👏👏

Its now on the guardian - I don’t think it was a direct hint though

I hadn’t picked up that it would be an interview rather than engaging with posters on here, as for others

feels more like a puff PR piece for mn, well both

I can’t bring myself to watch it but will await transcript

RoseslnTheHospital · 27/04/2022 19:50

I wonder if it was meant to be an actual webchat but then Sunak's team saw the questions and got cold feet.

MarshaBradyo · 27/04/2022 19:54

I did look at previous thread to see

’So we're pleased to say that later this week, Justine will be sitting down with the man who holds the nation's purse strings, Chancellor Rishi Sunak, to ask him your questions.’

so it looks like they always intended to do it this way. I find it a bit depressing but next time I’ll look for the we do the chat and get press angle

I also thought it would be engaging on the thread, have MNHQ ever done an in person interview before?

The cynic in me wonders if this was changed as there's less time to answer questions in person compared to answering posters on a thread.

ChiswickFlo · 27/04/2022 20:03

Ugh
Waffle waffle waffle

Arsewangry · 27/04/2022 20:26

Whelp. That was a bit of a let down. Started off promising but soon slimed back in to political style question avoiding. But hey, at least we have 5p a litre off fuel so we can afford to keep going to our baby classes!! 👍🏼

ShirleyPhallus · 27/04/2022 20:30

What a predictable letdown. Absolutely none of the real questions posters wanted answers to but a load of politiciany bullshit and waffle.

Disappointed but not surprised

Winecheesesleep · 27/04/2022 20:38

I'd appreciate a transcript too, thank you.

Antarcticant · 27/04/2022 20:39

The Mirror has picked up on the question about people with disabilities struggling:

Oh.
That was my question...

I wondered exactly the same.

Pity he didn’t actually properly answer any questions meaningfully - or have a proper grip on the details “er… errr…8 or 9 pounds” 🙄

Peppapigforlife · 27/04/2022 21:59

The healthy start vouchers are actually 4.25 a week (not 8 or 9 quid) and it costs me 4.50 in bus fares to get to the supermarket that accepts them (can't use them on my online weekly shop).

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/04/2022 22:35

Did he answer any questions on how well he sleeps at night?

Did he answer any questions on how well he sleeps at night?

Nope, none of those questions were put to him.

BillLius · 27/04/2022 22:57

What a waste of time.

L1ttledrummergirl · 27/04/2022 23:23

Did he say why he hasn't resigned?
I'll try and watch the video tomorrow but a transcript would be nice.

We have transcribers on mnet, maybe send it their way.

RoseslnTheHospital · 27/04/2022 23:25

He waffled about being very sorry, and that was about it.

GreenLunchBox · 27/04/2022 23:30

I had to switch off when he was talking about how grateful he was for the public-spiritedness of people that contribute to food banks.

He's such a slimy git

MNettersForNoahAndFiona · 28/04/2022 00:06

Any chance we could have Brandon Lewis MP next please? I'd love to see Justine ask him about the Noah Donohoe case. Especially about the Public Interest Immunity Certificate application by the police, who want to keep 508 pages of information secret in relation to this child's disappearance and death. It's up to Brandon Lewis whether or not it is signed off. More details here:

In relation to Rishi, I trust Justine mentioned that Maryland Cookies are on offer at Tesco at the moment for 65p? He will need to look after the pennies when the fuel bill hits the doormat for his new outdoor heated swimming pool at his home in Yorkshire. Well, one of his homes...

MNettersForNoahAndFiona · 28/04/2022 00:14

*Swimming pool heating bill widely reported to be £13,000pa. Poor Rishi can't be expected to worry about how much Healthy Start Vouchers are when he's got that to fret about.
