Should we back the No More Page 3 campaign? Please let us know what you think...

Hello all,

As some of you will know, there have been a few on-board debates about the No More Page 3 nomorepage3.org/ campaign, and whether or not Mumsnet should 'officially' join up as a supporter.

Previous threads here here here and here have been on balance supportive but not of a sufficient consensus for us to feel comfortable putting our full weight behind the cause.

With our most recent blog post on the issue, however, support seemed a bit more clear cut and there were lots of calls for us to back the campaign.

So we thought we'd canvass support more officially and widely. Do please use this thread to let us know whether you think we should sign up.

Obviously this is by no means a precise science, but in order to try to get a representative Mumsnet view, we will be placing a bit less weight on the views of those who have signed up to Mumsnet very recently.

Yes please, and thanks emcwill74, K8Middleton and Sauceforthegander for the eloquence. I had already signed to the campaign, but you make it so clear why is so important. I have for twenty years chosen not to buy the Sun, but it doesn't seem to be affecting their decision to run the page, we need to take it further.

RustyParker · 21/01/2014 13:56

I definitely think MN should support the campaign, especially as I feel it ties in with other campaigns MN are involved in: Let Girls be Girls and the Lads Mags one.

Meglet · 21/01/2014 13:57

Yes, please back it.

FuckingWankwings · 21/01/2014 13:59

Yes, MN should officially back it.

SirRaymondClench · 21/01/2014 13:59

Yes please, I would love MN to support the NMP3

Pudtat · 21/01/2014 14:04

I have already signed the petition and would be happy for mn to support it.

Sexualised images of any sort aren't really what a NEWSpaper should be about and I don't think it does women any favours.

Anatana · 21/01/2014 14:09

I don't care what is in The Sun tbh. I don't read it and never will, so have never even seen a page three girl. I think there are far more offensive things than titties in The Sun, like absolutely all of it and double on Sundays.

It's not on the front page, after all. You have to open the newspaper to see it.

Frettchen · 21/01/2014 14:11

Yes please.

I have already signed the petition, and think MN adding their weight behind the campaign would be a huge positive.

I never used to be too fussed about Page 3 - it was just a 'thing' and could be ignored. But then I realised it wasn't that simple - I could choose not to read The Sun, but there are many young children (boys AND girls) who see their father reading the paper, and learn at a young age that men are politicians and sports stars in suits and football strips, and women are for posing almost-naked. This shouldn't be in newspapers, ESPECIALLY newspapers which market themselves toward families with children.

So yes please; join the campaign.

nobutreally · 21/01/2014 14:14

Yes, I think this would be a great campaign for MN to back. And agree with others that the FAQ explain the campaign brilliantly - for anyone who hasn't already seen the link nomorepage3.org/faqs/

I'm actually surprised you feel the need to ask...

LBsBongers · 21/01/2014 14:16

Yes please

HerrenaHarridan · 21/01/2014 14:19

Yes please.

I'm not anti porn but I don't agree with page 3 for a lot of complex reasons.

Primarily the normalising of the surgically altered barbie.

Yes I think we should.

EeyoreIsh · 21/01/2014 14:22

Absolutely, yes.

Scarletbanner · 21/01/2014 14:24

To me it's a no-brainer: yes, Mumsnet should definitely back the campaign.

BOFtastic · 21/01/2014 14:25

To just reply to the OP, yes, of course we should. Total no-brainer.

Patchouli · 21/01/2014 14:27

Yes please.
Before my 2 young DDs start seeing it.

Fisharefriendsnotfood · 21/01/2014 14:27

I would like mumsnet to back this campaign Smile

DidIMissSomething · 21/01/2014 14:31

Yes, please support it.

DoctorTwo · 21/01/2014 14:31

The message is clear that young women are first and foremost sexual entertainment for men

Exactly StephanieDA. I have two teenage daughters and want them to be seen as people, not sex objects. I've signed the petition and would love MN to back the campaign to persuade them that having a daily photo of a topless woman is at best anachronistic and at worst misogynistic.

PortofinoRevisited · 21/01/2014 14:33

YES YES YES!

GossamerHailfilter · 21/01/2014 14:39

Absolutely.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 21/01/2014 14:41

Yes, I think mn should back the campagn, so long as they make it clear exactly what it is that the campaign is about. I dont want nipples 'banned' on page three, and then the women to still be there in barely there bikinis - the point is that the whole idea of having a woman sexually slathered all over the page of a NEWSpaper is just plain weird.

It reinforces the idea that even if the wider family do read it, news and current affairs are primarily for men. Also don't forget, it dumbs down the men, to suggest they are only interested in the news if if comes with a side order of tits.

I would also want it to be very clear to the s*n (possibly only using one sylable words...) that it is not about the nipples! I am an extended bfer and topless sunbather - i have no issue with nipples!! I wouldn't want them to not include for eg, pictures of how to check for breast lumps, because "we cant show nipples anymore".

Underthemountain · 21/01/2014 14:42

Yes!
