Should we back the No More Page 3 campaign? Please let us know what you think...

Hello all,

As some of you will know, there have been a few on-board debates about the No More Page 3 nomorepage3.org/ campaign, and whether or not Mumsnet should 'officially' join up as a supporter.

Previous threads here here here and here have been on balance supportive but not of a sufficient consensus for us to feel comfortable putting our full weight behind the cause.

With our most recent blog post on the issue, however, support seemed a bit more clear cut and there were lots of calls for us to back the campaign.

So we thought we'd canvass support more officially and widely. Do please use this thread to let us know whether you think we should sign up.

Obviously this is by no means a precise science, but in order to try to get a representative Mumsnet view, we will be placing a bit less weight on the views of those who have signed up to Mumsnet very recently.

I personally feel this is a no brainer - it is crazy that page 3 still exists and I would like to see mumsnet supporting the campaign against it. I can't see any sensible argument against supporting it (although have not read the full thread). In response to any suggestion that it is not the most important thing in the world, I think the campaign has already got up such a head of steam that support from organisations like mumsnet will help push it to a final conclusion and it helps raise awareness and pave the ground to address the bigger issues of sexualisation and objectification of young girls in the longer term.

WHOOOOOOOOOOOPPPPPPPPP!!!! Grin This has made my day!

emcwill74 · 22/01/2014 20:07

I bet Dinamore is too chicken for a webchat. Lemme at him! Is it OK to greet webchat guests by calling them the c-word, or is that frowned upon? Grin

SauceForTheGander · 22/01/2014 20:10

Web chat you say !

If he doesn't turn up how about we ask some of the big name advertisers in The Sun to come on and justify themselves. Especially those "family" brands and those who do tie ins for DCs eg free days out / holidays/ toys / movies.

Rupert Murdoch will not change until advertisers pull out.

TunipTheUnconquerable · 22/01/2014 20:16

Thank you Justine!!!! Thanks

Looking forward to the webchat Smile

NumanoidNancy · 22/01/2014 20:28

HOORAY!
Loving the idea of Dinsmore doing a webchat. Only one question he needs to be asked, over and over and over..."What is the POINT of page 3?" Because any answer that isn't "wank fodder" is dishonest.

KiwiBanana · 22/01/2014 20:29

Yay!! Good choice MN :)

cheoil · 22/01/2014 20:30

Yes, support it

CathyE76 · 22/01/2014 20:34

Yes, back the campaign I have done so for 18 months now to ensure that family newspapers are truly for the family with removal of the objectification of women.

Fouette · 22/01/2014 20:34

Yes for this reason up thread:

"Children (and adults!) via the Sun's Page 3 are daily exposed to the idea that men wear clothes and do important things, and that women are naked - for men. In this day and age!!!!"

NotGoodNotBad · 22/01/2014 20:44

Yes, please support it!

HeeHiles · 22/01/2014 20:47

Are there any female MP's supporting this apart from Lyn Featherstone? Maybe MN could get a few more of them on board?

Or find out the advertisers and see how many women are on the boards and see if we can't get them to withdraw advertising until it's taken out of the paper?

Nappaholic · 22/01/2014 20:56

I'm a supporter of the No More Page 3 campaign already. I'm not a feminazi or anything, but I feel strongly enough to sign a petition, like the FB page, and post a message on here! It's unacceptable that page 3 is acceptable; sadly the quickest way to achieve change is through the wallet. When the advertising revenue is threatened, things change pretty quickly.

2andout · 22/01/2014 21:03

Fantastic news Justine. Oh I do hope Dinsmore says yes to a webchat Smile

NotEnoughTime · 22/01/2014 21:03

HURRAY-FANTASTIC NEWS!

skyninja · 22/01/2014 21:09

I think page 3 topless photos are ridiculous and archaic and always look like they were taken in the 1980s. Do I think Page 3 should go? Yes. Easy.

Do I think mumsnet should officially support it? Well, I think you probably at least have an 'official' view on it as far as the media is concerned 'Mumsnet doesn't condone the presence of topless photos in the mass media etc', but as for the actual form this support would take, I don't know. It's going to be so easy for supporters of Page 3 to dismiss mumsnet as simply a bunch of grumpy miserable women.

ExcuseTypos · 22/01/2014 21:10

Great newsSmile

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 22/01/2014 21:12

Smile Flowers

Web chat is a great idea. Are we allowed to ask awkward questions and get 'restless' if he evades them?

bronwen82 · 22/01/2014 21:18

I agree with the 'no more page 3' campaign 100%

If anyone is unsure of their opinion...or disagrees - please go and inform yourself on exactly what is means to back this drive by visiting :

IndigoWoman2 · 22/01/2014 21:18

This is the right thing to do. If you know something's wrong, you should fight it. A problem seems to be getting signatures on the nmp3 petition; it's surprising there aren't more by now. It started after the Olympics I believe. The campaign needs publicity that makes it seem a normal thing to do to oppose page 3. I agree some MPs endorsing it would be good - why not male as well as female? Ask for their views, I say. Put people in a position where they have to say what they think....

WhatWouldCaitlinDo · 22/01/2014 21:24

Brilliant news. It has been interesting seeing how many first time or rare posters have chosen to comment. It's worth thinking about highlighting that among the stats in your press release, Justine. Mumsnet is sometimes seen as a bit of a closed circle.

JedwardScissorhands · 22/01/2014 21:29

No, I don 't support this campaign.

For the benefit of some patronising posters above, I understand this would be an editorial issue and not a ban. I also understand this would relate to images intended solely for sexual gratification as opposed to beach shots.

I still think boobs are just boobs.

Biped · 22/01/2014 21:33

Yes, please support it!
