Should we back the No More Page 3 campaign? Please let us know what you think...

Hello all,

As some of you will know, there have been a few on-board debates about the No More Page 3 nomorepage3.org/ campaign, and whether or not Mumsnet should 'officially' join up as a supporter.

Previous threads here here here and here have been on balance supportive but not of a sufficient consensus for us to feel comfortable putting our full weight behind the cause.

With our most recent blog post on the issue, however, support seemed a bit more clear cut and there were lots of calls for us to back the campaign.

So we thought we'd canvass support more officially and widely. Do please use this thread to let us know whether you think we should sign up.

Obviously this is by no means a precise science, but in order to try to get a representative Mumsnet view, we will be placing a bit less weight on the views of those who have signed up to Mumsnet very recently.

Yes, Mumsnet should get behind this v important campaign - Page 3 is sexist and destructive. There is nothing good about it.

superkat · 22/01/2014 11:52

Yes please!

JugglingFromHereToThere · 22/01/2014 11:52

Read the link to the FAQ page
As I expected was very convincing
Signed the petition
Yes please MNHQ - do support this campaign on all our behalf.
Surely a no-brainer for most ?!
As Nelson Mandela said about change "Everything seems impossible until it happens"
Hopefully one day we will look back and be amazed p3 was around for as long as it was.

adroit · 22/01/2014 11:55

please back the campaign. We really shouldn't tolerate the objectification of women. Time for it to end, mumsnet support would be very useful in getting rid of it

LarryAdler · 22/01/2014 11:56

Back it, please!

tallwivglasses · 22/01/2014 11:57

Yes please. Do it!

kitsilano · 22/01/2014 11:58

Yes, I would be delighted if mumsnet were to support this campaign

ArgyBargy77 · 22/01/2014 12:05

please back this campaign, it's a must for women's equality!

evertonmint · 22/01/2014 12:05

Yes, please back the NMP3 campaign.

FrozenNorthPole · 22/01/2014 12:05

Yes, please please back it!

The21stCenturyHousewife · 22/01/2014 12:09

I would be very pleased to see mumsnet support this campaign. Page 3 is an embarrassment - not only does it make the UK look terrible on the world stage but it promotes outdated, erroneous beliefs about women amongst the populace. It's scandalous that in this day and age something that calls itself a newspaper has pictures of topless women in it!

Apsara · 22/01/2014 12:12

Yes MN should definitely back this campaign. It's the 21st century - why is it acceptable to have a topless woman on a national newspaper?

Seasides · 22/01/2014 12:13

I'm all for backing it, it's a great campaign. Boobs aren't news! Page 3 is nothing but sexist.

Lulabellarama · 22/01/2014 12:19

Yes, please support it.

Of course there are 'more important' issues out there, but that doesn't mean you don't fight the other battles. And yes, the oversxualisation of women in the media is a bigger issue than just page 3, but you have to start somewhere and this seems like a highly visible place to do it.

TheOtherMrsMills · 22/01/2014 12:20

Yes, absolutely, you should support this campaign. For those of you claiming this issue isn't as important an issue as FGM, rape, child abuse, etc - and those claiming that the campaign is somehow anti-breastfeeding or prudish - look at all of the organisations who are already backing the NMP3 campaign. It's only by working together and supporting each other that we can move forward. Anyone who wants to support an issue they believe is more important can sign a petition or start a new one on change.org - that's how NMP3 began, and thousands of us have signed it.

lalouche · 22/01/2014 12:27

yes!

SheikYerbouti · 22/01/2014 12:29

Yes, MN should be supporting the NMP3 campaign - I personally would rather my 2 sons didn't view women as being just objects. Having a topless woman in a so-called family newspaper mans it's acceptable to view them in this way.

ChampagneCharlotte · 22/01/2014 12:30

Yes, please support this. I do, and have already signed the petition. My reason for signing was that I want both my children, daughter and son, to grow up feeling that they are valuable human beings, and that value has nothing to do with what their bodies look like. And boobs are not news!

Annarose83 · 22/01/2014 12:31

Yes I'd love MN to support this, I'm very passionate about it.

clareyd · 22/01/2014 12:34

Please please please support this campaign. I don't want my daughter and son growing up to believe that the size of a woman's breasts is more important than what she says and does. We are surrounded by the sexualisation and objectification of women. Taking the daily full page of it out of the best selling national newspaper is a great place to start.

PeachyPlumFairy · 22/01/2014 12:36

a ago and I say yes, not because g wrong with breasts or nudity, but because of context. Of course it's not anti breastfeeding, quite the reverse it feeds the minds of people who think public feeding is dirty and shameful. Breast are for babies and fun, objectification in a supposed newspaper on the other hand is something we should have relegated to the past years ago.

Of course page 3 or not the media is full of double standards cor women, but seems a great place to begin.

Rollercoasteryears · 22/01/2014 12:38

Yes please support it

chinchillasoup · 22/01/2014 12:41

YES PLEASE!! I absolutely agree that Mumsnet should join this debate and support the No More Page 3 campaign. I don't agree with those who say it isn't an issue we should worry about, as there are so many other more serious problems in the world (FGM, forced marriages, honour killings, education for girls etc). Of course, these are areas that need addressing too, but if we can't even get this one basic idea right (just a bit more respect for women), then what hope is there for other campaigns. It's all small steps in the right direction. Besides, Mumsnet is held in much higher regard than Russell Brand (the campaign's newest recruit) and might be taken more seriously ;)

InWithTheITCrowd · 22/01/2014 12:49

Yes! Please add my "yes" vote to the list.

This is a very public image in a very public newspaper, and the call to end Page 3 would be a very public step in the right direction.

It is less about the detail of a semi-naked young lady inside a national newspaper, and more about how representative that is of society and the objectification of women everywhere. The removal of Page 3 can surely only ever be A Good Thing.
It is possible to support this and other feminist causes too.

Cheeriomydeario · 22/01/2014 12:51

Support away. I'd like to see this campaign win through sheer weight of numbers and influence and I think Mumsnet could make a big difference.
