I think Mumsnet should mount a campaign against female genital mutilation.
This is not just a barbaric third world practice, it is happening now in the UK and on a large scale.
Mumsnet could force it into the open and into the newspapers.
Freedom of Information requests to all police forces on how many arrests and prosecutions they have made would reveal their lack of action on this, even though it is a criminal offence to do it here or take a girl abroad to have it done.
Ask Royal College of Midwives and the health visitors associations what they are doing to educate mothers from the respective cultures and spot danger signs that a girl is at risk?
Social services should also be involved when a girl is at risk.

Yes indeed. Be great to see MN active on this.

Yes, agree. Please do MN - campaign against female genital mutilation.

Please please can Mumsnet consider helping to raise the profile of FGM, which thanks to the BBC's Casuality programme tonight is a tiny bit more on the rador than it usually is. There must be SO many middle class mums whose children attend school with kids who are from different sorts of backgrounds, who may be at risk of FGM. By just making it a little easier for people to voice concerns about a child being at risk of FGM (coz "everyone" has heard of it and it's "out" there) it could help protect kids at risk of this terrible practice.

Gets my vote, yes please MN.

Just bumping, as I'm sure there must be more MN'ers who would want to get behind this.

LadyKinbote · 14/04/2013 09:23

Yes, I'd support that
