Car - 3 yr old plus expecting twins, just discovered we won't all be able to fit in the car...

I think we might have just found the straw to break the camel's back...

We have a Skoda Octavia Estate, 54 reg - it's great but we've just tried all configurations of seats and there is no way that one high back booster, two infant car seats, and two (very tall) adults can fit in. But we are in the process of doing building work on the house and there is simply no spare money - we are in fact taking out a loan on top of the mortgage to meet the shortfall on the building work.

What on earth can we do? We live in a rural area and I am disabled, we NEED a car!

Please help me think outside of sheer panic as to how to solve this!

By taking a seat out I meant carseat,we didn't realise until we took an 8 seater out and put the dc's carseats in. With 3 across you have to flip 1 seat forward to get in the back but that seat would have a car seat in, would have been a pita. The aisle on the 7 seater means you don't have this problem.

When we used to hire cars for trips away we had a Zafira once and found it the least favourable of the ones we hired (also had Grand Scenic and Chrysler Grand Voyager). I sat in the back and also found it made me feel v sick as MilaMae said (I don't normally get travel sick).

I didn't drive it but DH was not keen and definitely said it was not an enjoyable drive (like the Chrysler best but think they cost a fair bit more!).

My sis has a Toyota with the sliding doors and says it is a godsend.

Big sympathies to you for feeling shite etc. I hated most of my twin pregnancy even though it was pretty much plain sailing just because I had DS1 who was under two and dealing with him whilst pg was hideous. I didn't have to deal with arthritis etc as well.

As for the BH, I never had any really until maybe a week before I gave birth (at 37 weeks). If they are really bad it is probably worth getting checked out. Lots of luck.

If its any consolation (which it probably isn't) for your Dh...my dh had tears in his eyes when we had to sell the Audi estate to buy a Touran after having the girls!

I think what has really put me off the zafira type ones is this

We've been looking at the 7 seater volvos and 6 seater multiplas. I think the multiplas are safer in the new shape - does anyone know if that's right? I'm worrying about having my eldest in the front seat looking at the NCAP test.

Just to add my tuppence worth...
We had dd who was 2 when the twins were born so needed to fit a stage 1 seat & 2 stage 0's across the back which we couldnt do in a Zafira - no combinations would fit. Looked at loads of different cars but very very few would fit 3 seats of this type across the back. Didnt want to use the back row due to crash risk - we got a Peugeot 807, same as Citroen C8, 5 star NCAP & has 3 separate seats across middle, fits no problem. It has sliding doors which are good & a big boot if the 2 rear seats are folded out of the way.
Might be worth a look? Ours was 3yrs old & an ex lease car, so got a good deal too!

Hello ladies how are we all?

MUM41plus5 · 25/10/2009 01:54

Sorry, have come online after a night on the tipple, lovely Thai meal, and I thought I would catch up with my ladies on 40 plus but no one about, how are we all in the strange world of twins?

good here all in bed

No cars - we had a Xsara Picasso when twins arrived and ds1 was 3.3. Had two baby seats and a stage 1. Then as they grew had a baby seat (dt1 was smaller) a stage 1 and a high backed booster.

Then ds3 arrived and we swapped for the C8 and currently have dts in the very back with stage 1 seats (2.5) ds1 (5.9) behind the driver in a high backed booster and ds3 in the middle row in the middle seat in the baby carrier.

I don't use the seat behind the passenger unless we have an extra person (like MIL) with use (which isn't often) so I don't have the moving the seat issue.

Love the sliding doors
