Having Twins at East Surrey? (or live in the area?)

Hello

As discussed in my previous thread, here's a space for those of us expecting twins who are due to deliver at East Surrey to discuss our experiences.

Anyone else expecting twins close by is very welcome to join us.

I'm expecting non-identical twins in May 2009. This is my first pregnancy. I've had my first appointment at East Surrey and have my 20 week scan on 30th Dec and my next antenatal appointment on 5th Jan.

Look forward to chatting with you

Just back from the A3 Babybarn and more confused than ever! The barn itself a little bit disappointing as they had only an Out n About Nipper and a Baby Jogger City Mini but I don't know whether we were seeing a more recent model of the Nipper or just had a better demo of it, but I like it a lot more now that I've had another look. I think that the seats weren't completely flat on the first one I saw - they do go totally flat and with head supports and/or cosy toes would therefore be OK for newborns I think. The Baby Jogger was nice too - they are very similar and there were just a few things that were better for me on the Nipper - the wheels on the Baby Jogger not pneumatic and I didn't like the folding mechanism that much. One of the things that makes the Nipper really good for me though is that it's very low - the handle is low and I can see over it really well - I think this is a function of me being quite short and it might conversely be too low for very tall people.

Have decided that this decision is just the very first example of maternal guilt. The Nipper would be much better for me, would fit in the car easily (again making my life easier) and cost less than the Mountain Buggy, but they would be flat in the MB carry cots and facing me and so there would be less guilt!!!

Happy New Year all. Hope everyone had a nice time over the festive season. We were all ill in relays but better now and turning attention to shopping.
First Mrs F - how exciting two little girls.
Pop - hope all went well and looking forward to hearing your news.

Back to shopping - we ended up in Mothercare in Slough (don't ask). I'm now left wondering why we don't just go for a Maclaren or similar type stroller that's suitable from birth and be done with it. (on the grounds that we don't go off roading and barely used our transportation system with number 1!). As you said Mrs F guilt guilt guilt! Will investigate Baby nest though as they sound like they have a good selection.

1stMrsF · 04/01/2009 22:01

Hi magnummum, Happy New Year.

The only thing I'd say about a stroller is that they are nowhere near as easy to push even on smooth surfaces as the all terrain types with swivel front wheels, but I'm with you on whether the 'transportation system' is a step too far. This is why I'm thinking that the Nipper might be a good compromise.

Only trouble is, everyone who has commented on this forum and others says get the Mountain Buggy! I can see that you are getting the same response on Tamba...

2 hours on the internet earlier researching "wheels" nearly induced nervous breakdown! Turning my attention to other things like working out what we can beg and borrow. Glad to say, feeling much better after feeling pants (anaemic apparantly) so now horrid iron tablets have kicked ready to tackle a few things.

1stMrsF · 05/01/2009 21:33

LOL I know what you mean. I've had to stop looking at buggy porn!!

Appointment at East Surrey again today - saw same registrar who was still nice. I have been very breathless and a bit dizzy on occasion so most of the appointment spent discussing that and then he sent me to the Antenatal Day Unit to get some tests. All seems to be OK, probably babies squashing my diaphram rather than blood clot on the lungs (good to know) - need to call for results of anaemia test tomorrow so may be in the same boat. Glad to hear you're feeling better magnummum.

NCT have moved me to earlier antenatal course starting 23rd Feb and finishing 16th March so ample time before babies might appear (in fact now thinking maybe will meet women who will have their babies much earlier than me and miss out on the social aspect post birth - if I'm not worried about one thing, it's another) so that's one thing done. Still planning to go for the Tamba course but still got membership sorted - email from them says backlog due to Christmas and staff illness.

Hope to hear from Pop soon...

Hi all, just to let you know that Henry and Hugo were born early on the 23rd December. They were 33+6. I went in to labour on the 19th and the docs managed to stop it with drugs long enough to give me steroid injections for the boys lungs.Henry weighed 4lb 11oz and Hugo was 5lb 2oz. They spent 12 days in Special care and came home on Sunday. They are doing eally well and I'm so proud of them. Hope you are all doing well.

xxx

magnummum · 06/01/2009 15:17

Congratulations Pop that's wonderful news. Glad to hear you are all doing well.
xxxx

1stMrsF · 06/01/2009 16:18

Fabulous news Pop - congratulations! I love their names. Well done for getting through it all and everyone being home and well.

How are you doing?

OP posts:
jerin · 08/01/2009 11:58

Big Congratulations Pop and well done.... enjoy every minute. They were good sizes and so pleased to hear you're all home. Love the names too.... x

xfabba · 08/01/2009 12:07

Congratulations pop!

just seen this thread and just wanted to say that I had dc2 at E Surrey in 2007 and it was fine - though I had no issues or complications and didnt go to the PN ward which can be patchy I have heard (like all NHS post natal wards I suppose). I know lots of people that have been there - mainly to avoid May Day and all have had good or at least ok experiences. I had dc1 at St Thomas's in London which was truly hell on earth and I would definitely go back to ES for a third. It's not ultra luxurious but the midwives were a damn site better and more caring than St Thomas' we found. Good luck to you all.

Blood tests came back from Monday as borderline iron levels. Taking iron now and hopefully breathlessness will improve.

Hope all is well with everyone.

OP posts:
magnummum · 14/01/2009 13:46

Hi all, hope everyone's well.
Mrs F - hope iron is rising! I'm having fun and games trying to sort mine out! Emailed you re books etc but my tiscali is playing up so not sure if it arrived with you?
Just over a week to go before we hopefully find out what type of little beans we're having. Very excited!

1stMrsF · 14/01/2009 15:36

Sorry magnummum, have got your email, but have been on internet at work rather than home and not responded. Will take your post as call to action!

Very exciting re finding out gender. There is a mum on another forum I'm on who is also expecting twins at about the same time as us - her due date is between ours actually and she's just found out she's having two boys. Do you mind what you are having do you think?

OP posts:
magnummum · 14/01/2009 19:38

Talking of work - when are you stopping Mrs F and others? I'm starting Mat. leave beginning April but have loads of annual leave etc that they want me to add on in a block. More than happy to oblige which means I'm off around 11th March!!

Re. sexes. I really don't mind. We had a few fertility issues so just feel really lucky to have gorgeous Dd and another 2 on the way. (I did have a strong "feeling" that it was one of each but now not so sure so will have to leave it to the expert...)

1stMrsF · 15/01/2009 17:25

I'm finishing on the 20th Feb - I will be 28 weeks. I'm taking 2 weeks hols and then mat leave from 6th March. It's not a moment too soon I think, so I'd definitely advocate finishing early, particularly if you have another DC to run around after!

Magnummum you have mail

Secured free cot-top changer and moses basket stand from freecycle today! Yay!

Both my babies are breech and saw midwife today who says they still are and she is not too positive about them turning at this stage. So will have to get head around C-section I think - lots of questions for next appointment...

24 weeks today! Feels like a good milestone to have reached.

How are all the new babies?

OP posts:
magnummum · 22/01/2009 15:06

24 weeks does indeed sound like a milestone. Looking forward but slightly anxious about 20 week scan (though nearly 21) tomorrow! All gone a bit quiet on the baby front here though Pop posted on another thread last week. Hope all's well with everyone.

jerin · 24/01/2009 20:02

Hi All

Just to let you know my gorgeous twins - a boy and a girl arrived last week at 30 weeks. Each weighed just under 3lb and they are doing well in SCBU. All over very fast - first born naturally just gas and air (too late for epidural) and emergency c-section for second.
The care I've received at the hospital has been brilliant. Although all post natally - was only there an hour before first baby born.

magnummum · 25/01/2009 19:44

Congratulations Jerin. Pleased to hear that the babies are doing well and that you've all had good care. Keep us posted and well done.

1stMrsF · 26/01/2009 14:29

Hi Jerin!

Congratuations on the arrival of your babies, I am so glad to hear that eveything is OK. Look forward to hearing more when you are able.

BTW - on the great buggy debate, I've decided to go for the OutnAbout Nipper and it has arrived! My parents offered to buy it for us and I was able to show them in a shop when I was visiting last week, so we ordered. Best deal I could find was Practical Pushchairs

Hi Ladies

I hope all is going well with your pregnancies.
My gorgeous babes are about to leave hospital - its been a really long 7 weeks but they will hopefully be home by this weekend xx I cant wait

1stMrsF · 04/03/2009 16:13

That's great news jerin! It will be great to be home - better I should imagine than having to travel to the hospital all the time. Look forward to hearing from you again when you are settled in at home.

OP posts:
magnummum · 05/03/2009 08:37

That's fantastic Jerin - bet you can't wait to get them home. Look forward to hearing how you all settle down together when you have a minute. Still slightly freaked by you having them at 30 weeks, I'm now almost 27 and think 30 is a bit on the close side . Really glad they are doing well.

jerin · 05/03/2009 11:52

Please dont be freaked my mine arriving at 30 weeks. My son was born at 31 weeks so I wasnt too suprised but seemed to be the only person who thought it may happen. Can I just ask you all though - how often are you seen at the moment? I was only being seen every 4 weeks at the hospital. Not sure if I mwas supposed to be seen by midwife inbetween.
