DT'S with colds

My DT's both have colds. They are coughing, sneezing, and have the greenest, runniest noses ever. None of us are sleeping well at all. All I have tried so far, are nasal drops and vaporub. Is there anything else I can try?

My sister used baby capol/nurofen stuff with her child who would then happily go to sleep. Colds however are viruses and there is no cure for them per se, so not sure what else to suggest.

Much sympathy for the sleeplessness though!

How old are your DTs? I use Tixylix cough&cold or Medised at night which helps them to sleep. Sudafed syrup is a good decongestant also but I think using these might depend on the age of the child. Ask what the chemist would recommend perhaps.

karvol in a bowl of water in their room overnight - helps to ease congestion.

Medised is good too - how old are they ?

DT's are 6 months old. I know a lot od medecines/cough syrups are for older children. Is Karvol something that I can but over the counter?

Have you tried propping them at night? Also keep the windows in their room open whenever they are not in there to get lots of fresh air in.

karvol - you can get from chemists and supermarkets - just put a few drops in a bowl of water - it helps them breath a bit more easily.

You can get Karvol capsules - drop the oil onto a muslin and tie it up near the cot. Really helps ease their congestion.

Just seen another thread suggesting Karvol/similar plug in vaporisers. www.mumsnet.com/Talk/childrens_health/631763-plug-in-vapourisers

You can also get Menthol crystals from Boots. You put a pinch in a jam jar of boiling water (no lid, on a high shelf). It's cheaper than Karvol and you can microwave the jar when the water cools.

I thought about the vapourisers, but wasn't sure how effective they were, or how expensive.
