'oh no, twins, poor you' or 'what on earth will you do, how will you cope?' I swear to god I will scream abuse at them. I'm so happy to be having twins and some people's reactions are so negative. They've never had twins so how can they comment? I see myself as a very lucky and blessed person and wish that they would just be bloody happy for me.

I ate more yams as a child than I do now so I reckon my follicles were really ripe when we decided to start a family. I was 39yo and the twins were conceived in 3 weeks!!

KM, wow! However, one partner is still not genetically related but at least she got to carry one set.

I regularly exchange war stories with a lesbian couple at work who had twins by ivf.

Are they both yours -!!!! I don't quite know what to make of that. Whether to be offended or amused at their stupidity.

Quads, now that's something... blimey. One busy family!

I also heard that as you get older you often release more than one egg per cycle, a friend of mine conceived twins at 39yo. That and the yams is a potent combination!

BellaDonna79 · 01/08/2008 00:36

I have 5 quite close together and I always get people asking me which ones the twins are, well, they are the two who are the same size, Though I am often tempted to present my 7 year old and my 3 year old and say these two...

My dad is an identical triplet so him and his brothers always attracted loads of attention! Its quite strange really, the 3 of them are so similar, they'll be chatting and realise they have all bought the same car in the same colour on the same day etc!

I have a condition where all my organs are reversed (heart on right etc) so supposedly I had a twin at some point but my mother was never aware of it.

MarsLady · 01/08/2008 02:09

Bella you sound like a mirror twin!

Spokette.. I never eat yams! lol

charleymouse · 01/08/2008 11:28

Penona it might be worth getting your twins tested if they are alike. My identical boys had separate sacs and two placentas and I was told all through my pregnancy they were non-identical due to that. When they were born however one of the sonographers said to me "they look very alike do you think they could be identical" I said "ooh no you said they couldn't be due to separate placentas blah blah blah" and she said "we are just finding out if the embryo splits early enough they can implant separately and this results in identicals with separate sacs and placentas."

Lo and behold I had them tested by the MBF and the chances are they are 99.9999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999 99999999999999999999999999999999999999 identical

This was a complete shock to me and something I had never heard of. I wasn't even sure that they looked that alike but hey ho.

I think twins are wonderful and envy all the multiples mums there precious bundles incredibly.

Thought about you yesterday Mars as I had a lovely slice of lemon drizzle cake half way through my pampering spa session DHs birthday treat from me .

my fav/worst was always "oooo twins, i would have loved twins..." when mine were a few months old, not sleeping EVER, I was dressed in yesterdays clothes, walking round tesco like a zombie....i could cheerfully have handed the boys and the nappy bag over and walked home for a sleep......however 3 and half years on, I am expecting no.3 so it can't have been that bad hey......

mumoftwinz · 27/08/2008 17:43

Yes is worse when they come out. With the 'double trouble' type remarks. I used to retort 'double blessings', worst one ever is 'oooh terrible twins', this one drove my DH mad and was invariably said when they were totally quiet and behaving themselves! After all no one would ever think it was acceptable to go up to a singleton mum and say 'terrible girl' would they? This stuff used to do my head in. But now they are older (as they are ID) we still get remarks but think as im less harried now I can enjoy it more. People i used to like were the ones that would just say in passing (ie not hovering for a full conversation) 'They are beautiful' or maybe comment on how well behaved they were in a cafe etc. Comments like that can make my day!

Millie1 · 27/08/2008 20:44

Haven't read the full thread but our 14w old twins are non-identical. And visibly so ... one blonde, one dark. We get comments such as 'Are they identical?' followed by ... 'but will they become identical?'

mummyofbeautifultwingirls · 01/09/2008 11:47

Lol Millie1, some people are just so stupid!!!

I got really upset once when out shopping and some old lady came up to me and said "oooh twins, how lovely; One of each?" so I replied (through gritted teeth for the umpteenth time that day) "no both are girls" and she replied "oh what a shame" and walked off!!!!! I actually started to cry in the middle of John Lewis cos I just didn't get why it was such a shame........

I do also get fed up of random people coming up to me in the street/shopping centre saying after looking at the girls for 2 seconds "oooh I bet she is the naughty/cheeky/troublesome/other negative comment one" pointing at which ever one takes their fancy... I would understand it if they were being moany but at the time 9/10 they are just sitting smiling at this stranger!!!

groovychick2 · 01/09/2008 12:58

my boys are 5 now and are getting silly comments from other people at school. This mostly goes over their heads but when Scott was asked if he was the naughty one he was upset.I was in a shop the other day and was asked if they were mine!?!!I decided to say "no" then winked when she looked puzzled!I'd love a list of witty responses to these silly comments!

Litchick · 01/09/2008 21:40

When my twins were born we used to live in Greenwich and Japanese tourists would go potty over them - v lucky in that part of the world.
If people say 'hoe do you cope?' just smile and say 'I'm a great parent.' Or 'singletons - I don't know what all the fuss is about.'
