Possible twin pregnancy?

Hi all,

I’m currently 6w pregnant. I found out last Tuesday (2/12) and it’s already been a complete rollercoaster. I’ve had spotting pretty much every day since – intermittent, only when wiping. It started light brown/light pink with mild cramping, but this past Tuesday the cramps became more intense and the spotting turned darker brown, with one episode of bright red.

I ended up in A&E on Thursday due to a few other symptoms. All bloods came back normal, aside from my hcg hormone was higher than they would expect at my stage of pregnancy. They said this may be due to pregnancy being in the wrong place or me being further along than I thought (I wasn’t). They ruled out ectopic as they could see the pregnancy was in the right place and there was a tiny heartbeat flicker, but they said I also had an ovarian cyst which had ruptured. I was discharged Friday, but that night the pain returned and every time I went for a wee there was bright red blood, even small bits of tissue.

I had another scan yesterday just to check everything. They could still see baby with a little flicker, measuring 5+5, but they also saw another ‘sac’ above it. The sonographer said this could either be a small bleed that should resolve on its own (she confirmed it wasn’t a subchorionic haematoma), or it could be another pregnancy. However, she felt it “didn’t look promising” as it appeared empty.

She didn’t spend much time on the second sac, just measured the diameter. On the still scan it looks smaller than the viable pregnancy, but when she moved the probe they actually looked quite similar in size… empty sac measured 1.11cm and the viable pregnancy was 1.36cm. I thought I saw something in it, but obviously I’m not qualified so trusting what she said.

She’s asked me to come back in 2 weeks as she couldn’t be 100% certain, although she did seem fairly confident it wasn’t another pregnancy.

For any twin mums (or anyone who’s had something similar) – does this sound or look familiar at all? Trying not to Google myself into madness as my partners dad is a twin and they also run in my side of the family 🙈 I’ve had no symptoms at all really, maybe the odd wave of nausea!

TIA x

Hey OP, sorry you've not had a response to this yet! Hard to say, really. I learned I was having twins at my 6wk scan - Twin A was measuring 6w6d and Twin B was 6w3d. Here are some pics from my scan which may help you to compare against. You can see B's sac is quite a bit smaller.

Are you booked in for your next scan? Which provider did you use? I would highly recommend a diagnostic clinic like Ultrasound Direct rather than Meet Your Miracle/Window to the Womb at such an early stage if you can get to one!
